Took an introductory summer course before I started uni and took a Chinese class every semester for 4 years. Plus Chinese literature classes.

I studied and practiced every night for four years. I labeled things in my dorm/apartment in Chinese and said the Chinese word every time I interacted with them. I read Chinese newspapers.

Fluently speaking Chinese isn't hard, it's very easy once you get over the initial difficulty of the four tones. Reading and writing is INSANE and I'm still not entirely proficient.
