Yeah, At my lowest I looked chubby, kept almost fainting (I never lose consciousness, just go blind and deaf for a bit), slept for days...
Then I started eating more and found an anorexia recovery blog which really inspired me to start working out, then I found fit and started doing weights.
I still have a lot of trouble gaining muscle mass but I look so much better than before, when I was eating less I'd just lose muscle.

It doesn't burn calories but it builds muscle, building muscle requires energy and protein. If you're just eating at maintenance that energy will have to come from body fat. Cardio might speed up the process, and it's generally good for you, but for someone who is underweight it is not necessary.
