>Chronicles - scents of history: Boston Tea Party, 1773
The top starts of kind of rubbery, I assume this is because of the castoreum and leather. Ambergris gives this a sort of a 'wet' character, but all in all it's definitely a tea scent. Not a cup of tea scent, mind you, but tea leaf in a crate on a ship scent. I like it.
>Cleopatra’s Power Play, 47 BC
Very green for an amber. Very delicious too, paradoxically. When it has stuck to clothes a bit it smells like freshly baked cookies, but on skin palm leaf and dates make for an interesting juxtapozition of a green scent and an amber scent. Lasts for an eternity. The former lasts long too, but this one is especially noticeable.

UPDATE: JPG Chads I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Today I went into my local macys to get me a bottle of Le Beau and they were out of stock (No surprise, everyone is trying to pull chicks with summer right around the corner). However, the store sales lady told me that in their recent orientation they got told Le Beau le parfum will not be sold in the US anymore. Will be exclusive to Europe. Stock up now while you can!

Opening is perhaps kind of divisive with its feminine flowers, but then it’s pistachio and vanilla all the way down. You really gotta love pistachio to like this.
>Tobacco Vanille
A tug of war between tobacco leaf and vanille with some dried fruits dropping in to say hello at times. I like it, but it’s frankly kind of an impractical fragrance to wear.
>Oud Wood
Haven’t tried it, but apparently it has ghastly bad longevity for its price. Shame, because it sounds like it could be a rather pleasant woody scent.

To me the quintessential Tom Ford perfume is half of a good idea: an interesting (or well quoted) top note or dry down but rarely a perfume that manages to have something interesting to say from top to heart to dry down. His best perfumes are usually just some older perfume slimmed down for modern tastes and simplified accordingly: Tuscan leather quoting from knize ten with it's salacious red berries and leather top note, beau de hour basically being a take on zino, neroli portofino being an interpretation of 4711. But at the prices he charges I would expect perfumes that display greater artistry, considering you can buy guerlains for a lot less and indeed get something like youth dew or cabochard or aramis or aromatics elixir or yatagan or... for comparative pocket change.

Scent for a 21 year old student living in a humid tropical climate (rainy and sunny seasons only) that has good sillage and isn't expensive (>$100 preferably around ~$50 or less)? The first 10 seconds of the opening smells like pickles. I don't know what is causing that, probably the vetiver, but it's a very pickly smell. After that it's a pleasant barbershop fragrance. I'd give it a strong recommend if it was 400 dollars cheaper than it is, I'd say this was pretty good.

Honest question, how did Aventus get memed so hard? I genuinely don't understand it. I'm not going to go full contrarian and be like ItS fUcKiNg PiSs WaTeR, I think it smells nice, but I don't understand how it became le ebin "King of Fragrances". It doesn't even really stand out to me that much compared to other Creed fragrances. I've gotten more positive feedback from Acqua di Gio Profondo, which is a fragrance I personally think smells like vaguely lemony shower gel. Even when I ask people directly what they think of it, they're usually like "it's nice, but I like your other ones better".

Yeah, maybe the original formulation was better, but I can't imagine it's THAT different. It's really not hard to pull compliments with fresh citrusy/musky fragrances, but Aventus doesn't even stand out in that very crowded category. And I hate that I go noseblind to it within 15 minutes. How the fuck am I supposed to feel superior to the rubes when I keep forgetting I'm wearing the $10,000 meme water. There's no point.

>> No.18077099

>>18077096
When it was released, it was a really big deal. So many maisons copied its DNA that you could argue that they invented an entirely new category. Now that everyone has an Aventus clone in their catalog (and some of the sub-$100 clones are actually better) it's not special anymore. It's a frag that was supposed to be the GOAT then everyone just did it themselves. Honestly if they were able to pull off Acqua di Gio type prices then I think we'd respect it a lot more since you would have piles and piles of better clones out there for less. If you want an Aventus DNA just get Cedrat Boise from Costco.

I mean, we're all just kind of pretending they can't. Like you said, there are alternatives that do it better for a fraction of the price. Honestly, if I was Blackrock, I'd just start bottling CDNI or Explorer and continue to charge Aventus prices. If anything, it would end the batch variation complaints

>> No.18077110

>>18077107
You aren't wrong, and even pre-blackrock I feel like Creed leans heavily into a false image. Many brands manage to project themselves as something that's worth the value just because it's them, even if it isn't uniquely special compared to other options. Creed is a perfect example of that.

>If anything, it would end the batch variation complaints
The batch variation issue likely stems from the use of cyclogalbanate, which doesn't have an isomer and can smell different from batch to batch. I don't know enough about the chemistry behind it to say why they need to use that aromachemical in particular, but apparently a lot of perfumers think that is what's causing it. Chemistry is tricky and you can't always just easily swap out one chemical for another without it effecting the entire fragrance. But what I can say is that, to my nose, there is definitely a noticeable difference between Aventus and the myriad clones. I wouldn't even say it's better or worse, it's just noticeably different. If I were a betting man I'd guess that changing whatever chemical is responsible for the batch variations would cause Aventus to lose that quality.

That's not the case because I actually want this thing. Not understanding how discounters work doesn't really exclude me or make me a poor candidate for buying things on the internet.
I'm a naive retard, sure. Who cares? Just asked a question.

smelled Aventus out in the wild today. middle aged bald, bearded, husky dad looking guy. asked if it was Aventus
"wow, good nose"
real aventus, not a clone?
"yeah"
damn, baller. from a store, or did you get it discounted?
"once a year, Costco has it for cheaper"
still, it's pretty expensive stuff
"yeah, but what I like about it is it lasts and lasts"

he went on his way, but for a while afterward I was dwelling on "it lasts and lasts." LASTS AND LASTS? Aventus?

That I own?
Triad
Sir Winston
Iron Duke

Bonus points to Cuoium just for it's unbelievable projection, but that stuff is very divisive. I might order Cuirtis when Areej's site comes back online in a few days, seems like a pretty wild leather scent with a ton of castoreum in it.
