Besides aesthetics, is there any meaningful difference between a JLC movement and a Valjoux or ETA movement? Durability? Reliability? Ease of maintenance?

JLC movements tend to be a little more specialized. They do a lot more complications, they do a lot of shaped movements.
ETA doesn't make as many calibers.

In terms of ease of maintenance, they're about the same, given the same size and complications. Both are built with the traditional Swiss four wheel architecture. (Cost of maintenance from the dealer is another matter.)

For equally sized movements, durability is about the same too. JLC movements have a reputation for being fragile or fiddly, but those are usually their ultra-thin or highly complicated movements. Companies like IWC would put a dress watch JLC caliber in a sports watch in order to make the watch thinner and then act surprised when it couldn't take a beating.
They are certainly capable of building robust movements, e.g. the Autotractor.

I want to gift my father a watch up to 1.500 EUR. Preferable a newish one. Something a little robust as my father works with his hands and isn't exactly careful. Any recommendations for watches that will not be totally worthless after a few years? I don't expect it to appreciate in value per se but it shouldn't be consumer garbage either. Is picrel good?

You don't buy a Seiko with re-sale value in mind. They're disposable. Seiko themselves treat them like they're disposable. That's why they don't stock replacement parts for longer than ten years.

The only watches that reliably hold value are Rolexes and Pateks.

More importantly, though, does your father actually want a watch? If he doesn't currently wear a watch he wouldn't really want one. You'd be spending a lot of money and then he'd feel obligated to wear it. What is his style? Maybe he'd like a G-Shock or a fitness tracker like a Garmin or something?

I see your point about seiko's being disposable.. I'm currently looking into a Sinn 556.

My father always wears watches and he likes them, but he'd never spend more than 50 bucks on a watch for himself. He is a person that never treats himself to anything at all and has worked without as much of a break since he's been 16. We were piss-poor until about 2015 but he tried his hardest for me not to notice. Now, partly due to my career, I can finally treat him to something as a little thank you. We're on term where I can say for sure he'd wear it with pride because he'll understand the implications. His style would best fit business casual, I'd say. A watch like the Sinn 556 or Seiko Prospex would definitely suit him better than a G-Shock

>>17955106
Yeah, it's not like he's extremely rough. It's just that he's a bit absent-minded. I've never seen him break a watch before for that matter.

So I went to the Rolex AD and was able to try some Rolies for the very first time. The lady brought me a DJ36 (pic related), a Sub and an Explorer 36.

You know what? Fuck it I'll say it.
I want a Rolex now.

I've never been really impressed by Rolex on pictures, but these are the best looking watches I've ever tried. The Datejust especially is a real beauty on the jubillee bracelet, and even the Explorer (which I always thought looks like shit) is amazing on the wrist. The Sub is too big and sporty for me but GODDAMN it's a cool watch.

Wristlet newfag from the last thread. I measured my wrist and its 15cm circumference and I read online that a 34mm-36mm case diameter is recommended.
My only question is why the sticky says 33-36mm is patrician. What's so good about that size?

>> No.17955301

>>17955275
I'd venture to guess the 556 would be absolutely fine on your father because 38.5mm wears really well for both thinner and thicker wrists. Also, I'd check the lug-to-lug on the 104 if his wrists are very thin, because there's a risk of the lugs extending beyond the wrist which will make the watch less comfortable to wear (and it looks worse, imo). 104's case diameter is 41mm which could be on the larger side, but still fine for your father.

I'm 183cm tall with normal wrists and both the 556 and the 104 look fine on me. Never owned a 104, but worn a friend's piece and I think the lug-to-lug is a bit larger on that compared to the 556.

Larger watches (40mm and beyond) are a relatively new or modern trend, mainly driven by retards who want their watch to draw attention. 33-36mm has been the classic size for pretty much all of wrist watch history, just look at any respectable brand's vintage models.

First of all, it's the classic historical mens watch case size. Actually, during both world wars it wasn't uncommon for men to wear 31mm watches.

Second, it is functional. Smaller watches are thinner, lighter, and in every way more comfortable. If you have to do any kind of work or chores with your hands it's less likely a smaller watch will get in your way or get hung up on things or block you from reaching into a tight drawer or something. You can slide your sleeve over it much more easily.

Third, there just really isn't any benefit to wearing a larger watch. If a 35mm watch tells you the same information as a 40mm watch, why even bother with the 40mm watch? If you aren't getting any additional complications or utility as a trade off for that additional size then you're blowing up the dimensions and weight and throwing off the aesthetic proportions of the dial for no reason other than trying to make your watch more noticeable to other people. That's almost vulgar at worst and kind of just goofy at best.

You should try it for yourself. Wear a 36 for ancouple weeks, then a 40 for a couple weeks, then switch back. Some people have a preference for one or the other, that's fine, but the differences are noticeable when you wear them long term. Then for fun try wearing a big 46mm watch and see if you even make it a week. Bigger isn't necessarily better. It only takes a few days of "uh oh, does this watch look too small on me?" to get used to the 36mm proportions and get over it and accept the feeling of freedom.

Also, I didn't think of this until just now, but as a subtopic of functional weight and balance gold is much heavier than steel. So if you're looking at wearing a gold watch you're already looking at taking on more weight and the additional weight of the gold submariner is just going to be that much more extreme compared to going with a 36mm daydate.

Lug-to-lug refers to the width of the watch, from top to bottom lugs. Lugs are the pieces which the bracelet connects to. Also, get the H-link bracelet (top one in your pic), one of the best steel bracelets you can get at that price range. Super comfy.

On accuracy, my 556 has been between +/- 5 seconds, most of the time it's 2-3 seconds fast.

Let's say I had a bunch of cheapo Seikos/Casios and I bought my first real watch. I'm not going to bother naming them because /wt/ has a justifiably bad opinion on the brand. All /wt/ needs to know is that It's a GADA with a metal bracelet. But now I've come across a predicament.

I want a watch roll, a decent one like around $100-$500. Genuine full grain leather with a nice felt interior. My issue is I don't know if I should buy a roll for 2, 3 or 4 or more watches. And even If I do IDK what watches to put in it.

This is why I need your help guys.

1. recommend me a watch roll

2. recommend me what pathway I should take next on my watch collection journey.

I'd get one for 3-4 watches, because I don't like to hoard and since I know myself, I limit myself--e.g. I only buy one watch per year. I choose it on xmas and then mull it over until my b-day or next xmas (I'm thinking a cartier tank louis for next year)

No I travel with one, but I would like a nice place to store them. Removing them from the box feels like a chore. I am assuming a watch roll is where you store good watches, like for my Seikos I can just throw them in a box. I don't want these things scratched.

>>17956085
I've been looking at ones made by Wolf but I don't like that you need to remove all your watches from the roll to get to the one you want. I've been looking at etsy as well but they seem to be garbage quality.

I've seen some nice one going for $230 by Everest as well but they look identical to a $25 Amazon one. I also wouldn't mind some nice genuine wood watch boxes, I prefer high polish walnut.

You shouldn't be buying watches on financing. Hell you shouldn't be buying anything except maybe your home on financing, cars/watches should be cash.

What watch is it dont be shy

Check local stores or autistically look into amazon listings with very good reviews. I've gotten surprisingly high quality wood boxes from random amazon listings for 20$ that were higher quality than the expensive shit i've gotten (Real wood panel\dividers and padded suede on the inside and under the box + actual pillow cushions)

I already posted it here before. It's not nothing super exciting and not worth posting. But yea I'll look into Amazon, I'm a brand whore. I'll admit that, solely because the same shitty knockoffs on Amazon/Aliexpress/Temo genuinely sucked.

Not that anon but if you're confident you can invest and earn more than the cash, there's nothing wrong with 0 percent APR.

Anything higher than 0 percent is retarded though, like the normies who finance expensive engagement rings.

Because poor people are generally poor for reasons that make them undesirable to be around. They're stupid, lazy, obnoxious, often addicted to drugs, frequently display limited emotional control and are prone to violence.

To be clear, that's not all poor people. If you're some broke-ass kid that managed to get himself into MIT, rich people are generally delighted to talk to you.

You're wrong. I have bought one car on cash but it completely depends on the rate you can get at the time. I got 0.9% on the one i have a payment off and thats nothing, left me more money to put into actual investments
