Been looking at photographs from the 40s - 70s on how people dressed in the southern US. I live in Alabama and want to try it since I want to feel a bit more mature. Ideal shirts and pants for this?

In the photo some of the shirts have a ton of drape. Is it a fit thing for the period or would should you go up a size?

I would love to be at their churchhouse during one of these sermons.
Would be IRL kino of the highest order.

Going up a size will result in cuffs and collar that don't fit, which looks sloppy. You want shirts that are your size, but with a baggy chest.

Look for stuff advertised as a relaxed fit or just go thrifting at church auctions?

The south was never Christian. We merely made churches as a way of subversion during hard times.

Dress like a devil.

Wear a nice button up. Try to keep them mostly white.
Nothing slim or athletic fitting.

My grandpa loved bluegrass and would play Banjos and Fiddles.
He dressed just like that.
That pic perfectly captures what it is I think about when I think about him.
We’re from South Carolina.

I think you can get away with jeans with a relaxed fit or relaxed boot if you’re thinking closer to the 70s. If you want similar dress pants, I’d go thrifting.
As others have said. White loose fitting button up. If it has a striped pattern that’s fine too. Just nothing checkered or too colorful.
I think it’s a pretty good style. You’re well dressed without much effort. Could get yourself a southern cougar if you’re good looking enough lol

Old photos of my family in Hiawassee, GA were the same.

some linen shirts are cut a lot looser and can be more billowy .. they're definitely more comfortable here in New England on a hot humid day

Older people in my city (60+ and up) still dress like this. Especially on Sundays (There's only one church in town and 1/3 of the people who live here attend it).
I live in West Virginia.
