Yep, bought a vintage Omega Geneve about 13 years ago for £200 when I suddenly decided I was 'into watches' because 'gold dress watch = classy'.

Jumped into a pool with it about 6 months later and it washed all of the dial markers and text off, and eventually the crown fell off. Replacing the watch with something more durable & modern thereafter is when I actually learnt about watches.

That is pretty nice. It looks like mid 60s semenmaster from that lug shape, I think later half of the 60s because the earlier ones didn't have the 2 lines of text. If you ever take the caseback off you can look up the serial number and find out the exact year of production, but my guess is between 1965-70.

Don Draper from the TV show Mad Men wears a 60s semenmaster too, but his is a De Ville with a black dial and a date window. Pure class.

Honestly hardly matters for me, because I don't wear the same watch two days in a row. After that I just let them wind down (watch winders are snake-oil and are actually bad for your watches in the long run).

Though it runs probably okay, since the movement was in decent condition, and I am a proper watchmaker, not just some battery-bozo so I serviced it right.

Any watch you buy is going to need to get fixed/serviced at some point, because no watch on earth is going to run perfectly for eternity.

You should, oils have an expiration date. I'm looking at a bottle of Moebius 9010 now, and it's from a 2021 lot with an expiration date of 2024/11. On top of that you should at least get the gaskets checked, because the rubber rings will deteriorate with age.

Lack of use will prolong movement life (which is why I disagree with watch winders, you're running the movement for nothing) over decades, but oils will still age.

I think the general rule with watches is to use it until there is a noticeable deviation of time keeping. These things work, and if you don't use it that often then there is not much wear. Yes you can get it serviced more often but you don't have to. At least 10 years if not 20.

Quartz is the most reliable and most accurate. Solar is just a quartz battery, but solar powered. Both lasts for a loooong time. It depends on the quality. A cheap quartz lasts for a few years. A good quartz can lasts for 10+ years. I’ve heard stories of 15+. The battery change is simple. $20 to change it

Automatic is less accurate and less strong. If you drop it, you run the risk of damaging the movement, which can ruin the watch. Automatic watches need to be maintenanced every few years like a car. This can typically run you a lot depending on the brand. If it’s something like Rolex or Omega, you can expect to pay at minimum $1,000 every few years in maintenance

As with any other watch, it varies a lot. In this case, for example, my Lange keeps time between 3 to 4 seconds a day but, rather funny, only if I try to keep the reserve indicator between the second and the fourth notches.
On the other hand, the Chronometre Bleu truly keeps itself below the 2 seconds per day variation.

Thanks m8. Have you ever tried to buy other items to "compliment" your watch?
Since I wear a suit somewhat often, when I bought my Lange I went thru a lot of trouble to find a couple of cufflinks to have the exact same tone of gold. I eventually found out that, at the time Piaget and ALS were working with the exact blend and bough my Altiplano Cufflinks. (Picrel)

Since Lange's yellow gold (not honeygold, as that an exclusive mix) is also a bit hard to find in other brands, I do wonder if you have ever tried.

ok my PT5000 failed.
basically picrel broke (part of the keyless works) and the hook thing jammed the crown that begun to act strangely. So it's a material's defect, wrong steel or wrong heat treatment.
I ordered the equivalent ETA part hoping the dimensions are the same.
I disassembled and cleaned the movement and while it seems built nicely it's clear it has been assembled by slave monkeys since there is quite a bit of dirt, screwdriver's mark and all the screws are overtorqued.
TL;DR don't buy a watch with a PT5000 inside. It runs fine until it doesn't. Buy a watch with a SW200 or a real ETA 2824-2 or a Japanese movement.

Reminder,
Having a nice watch is completely pointless if you're fat. Anyone close enough to be able to see that your watch is nice isn't going to be thinking

That's not really a Patek signature design. Old vintage dress chronos all had a certain look, mostly because many all used the same movement.
It's not like Breitling is ripping off the Patek's lug or case architecture, and salmon dials are hardly unique to Patek.

Very, more than a few vintage electrics I own too. However, if you're planning of buying a second hand one, you'll need to have it service before puting it to work. Once serviced and with its gas refilled, it will keep excellent time for months, before you simply need to re-adjust it, as long as you place it where there is enough temp variation to work. Not too high or too low, tho.
