I agree, seems like in the 90s there was a 'craze' to make watches as thin as possible. I have a quartz that is like 4mm thick. I love it.
>>17505606
Bro it just depends on your wrist and body build. 40mm might look small on a large man with large hands and thick wrist. Then you have /fa/gs where they look like they're 12 years old wearing grandad's watch again because its just hilariously large on them. 40mm looks okay on me, i just don't like them personally on my wrist despite having more than 1.

Also if you’re going to get a quartz watch and spend that money, get a High Accuracy Quartz. I’ve owned some from GS, Citizen, Breitling and currently one from Omega with the calibre 5619.

Of those 4 GS and Citizen are the best movements, but Breitling and Omega HAQ are superb as well. But not every Omega quartz watch is High Accuracy so read up on it.

Honestly hard pressed to find better quality-feeling watches for the price point than homages/replicas since they're aiming to fool people into thinking it's the real mccoy.

It can be worth getting one of these to see if you like it enough to pony up the dough for the real thing later down the line. Or if you don't really care about watches at all and just want something that looks pretty

I'd say the real con in an homage is when it's Rolex since most are so reognizable - which leads to "Oh is that an explorer you have there?" "oh no this is amazon shit" "oh ok.." - I've had more watch conversations spring up from when I wear my Pepsi than any other watch I own put together.

Lusso does the best omega replicas in that price point. I could spend an extra 100-200 quid and get a 1:1 replica but 95% there is good enough for me. I mainly buy watches because i like the design. IDGAF about gay shit like heratige, muh materials, muh finishing (to an extent). As long as its automatic, has a design i enjoy and has a relatively reliable movement im happy.

Replicas have moved leaps and bounds in the past 10 years. It is getting to the point where jewellers cant tell apart the higher tier replicas with replica movements etc.

I completely agree that replicas have gotten extraordinarily better than they used to be. Buying them for the design makes sense, except the execution is usually poor enough to affect the total design look, which is why you can tell they're fake.

There are two types that are indistinguishable from the real deal: the Panerai clones; their cases, dials, and hands are so simple to construct that even the Chinese can do it. The other? Frankenwatches that use genuine dials, cases, and bracelets, where the movement is the only thing that could distinguish the watch from something genuine, aside from the matching of parts to the serial number.

For me, fakes are a waste of money. Just save up and buy the real thing if you want it. You'll enjoy it more.

this is where you're wrong. If it takes you over a minute to see my watch is fake, then imo that is close enough of a match to the original that the overall design isnt effected. Because when someone sees you wearing a watch, they arent inspecting it in close detail. Honestly i have compared images of even the cheaper fakes to real watches and it is hard to tell the difference without seeing the movement. You know this, i know this.
>bro just save up for the real thing!
Yeah what about something like the AP royal oak. Am i supposed to just save up 60 grand for a watch as a normal guy? How about go fuck yourself. The design is unique and iconic, i love it. But there is no way i'd be able to afford a real one in my lifetime and buying one would be stupid and insane as an average earner. I like my fake, i dont give a shit if the finish is bad compared to a 60 grand watch.

I don’t know, I guess if you just care about the design sure, but to me the nicest part about wearing a good watch is the tactile feel of it, the velvety bracelet, the click of the bezel, the satisfying sound of the gears when you wind it, etc. Reps that I’ve handled don’t feel the same. I’m sure there’s a mental component there, but they usually feel like they’re about to fall apart.

It's not only the look of the watch, it's the experience of owning it. No fake can come close except the two types I mentioned earlier.

Part of the fun of owning watches is being able to scrutinize the watch in detail to see more things and discover the beauty of the watch. You can't do that with a fake because there comes a point where increased scrutiny creates sadness and disappointment because the fake is a fake.

Save for the watch you want. You'd be surprised how possible it is, if you're extremely disciplined about it.

I think if you care about that shit, you're either autistic or brainwashed by the autistic watch collecting community (which itself is brainwashed by watch manafacturers) to hand over thousands of your hard-earned dollars for a little metal trinket because of some unquantifiable fuzzy feeling of the trinket being special and magic.

Wanna hear something weird. There are some 1:1 replicas where in comparison to the original they actually have better finishes than the original watch they're replicating. Your idea of quality and finish is fed to you by marketing and brainwashing. How are these chink machine-made replicas making watches with better aspects than the orginal watch they're copying that retail for 10x the price? Is it perhaps because the watch industry is a scam?

If you arent rich there is literally zero reason to spend over $1000 on a watch in your entire life. If you are rich, all power to you, go nuts.

Not him, but I think this is stupid advice. Let's say you manage to save 60k in the course of 10-20 years, then what? You buy the watch but you will never wear it. Literally years of effort and sacrifice went into that thing, you will not be able to leave the house with it without being extremely anxious (and rightly so). As a general rule, your watch should never be a significant fraction of your net worth.

Your analogy isnt really valid because a piece of original art is a 1/1. It is different materials to a print (paint, canvas) that cannot be replicated 1:1 in any way and is signed by the artist.

A watch is more like a print, because it is replicated with identical materials ad infinitum. A replica is like a print of a print. You can get 99% of the way to the print's quality if you scan it well and use the same ink/materials to re-print it.

Also btw i have no qualms telling anyone that my watch is fake. I dont expect people to believe that the AP royal oak on my wrist is the real 60 grand watch. But the important thing is that nobody will ever care or call me out on it anyway. People will either enjoy the design or not give a shit. And if they did call me out i'd laugh.

I agree that the feel stuff that watch autists go on about is bullshit. You could put a replica and real watch in front of 99.9% of the population and they wouldnt be able to tell them apart.

Sounds pretty nitpicky to justify having the replica. Just don't know what the goal is for having a replica for such an expensive watch besides trying to represent you have an expensive watch. You can enjoy watches without being into the horology portion.

I respect the work that can go into watches especially when it's oldschool handmade such as Dornbluth and sohn, but there's definitely a point in price where you pay for diminishing returns where the price isn't really a true reflection in terms of the increase in quality vs. the lower ones.

AKA a Royal Oak isn't going to be 6x better than a Rolex just because its price is.

Why should this not apply to a homage? The design is compromised to the point where i think they dont look close enough to the original for me to want it. What is wrong with this?

Why does me wearing a 60 pound replica of a 60k watch make watchfags seethe so much? I could have a print of a Titian painting in my house and nobody would be bothered. Why cant i do the same with my wrist?

Yes that's a very real concern. Generally, the less the cardstock is handled and agitated during assembly the cleaner it will stay. Sharp tools help a lot with this, leaving cleaner cuts that pull off fewer fibers. The next step is going through proper glue cleanup. The glues I use is a craft glue that dries clear, but can be lightly rubbed with a foam swab to ball up any excess that can be removed with tweezers/rodico. Ensuring that all of the excess is removed is also important to overall appearance/risk of contamination. The top of the movement is the calendar works, and fortunately there isn't a whole lot that risks gripping the fibers and pulling things off. There are two main entry points for dust/fibers from the cardstock: the date window and the center hole for the hands. So keeping those clear of any contamination is done by lightly burnishing with a tool followed by cleanup with rodico and inspection under a loupe for any loose fibers/glue residue. Cleaning up with rodico and avoiding as much as possible disturbing the fibers on the back is the approach I currently take. Dial feet are attached with superglue by placing the adhesive feet in a jig and then lowering the dial on, affixing the feet directly to the back side card stock.

In the first iteration, I tried gluing on a very thin plastic liner to the back (that I got from the see-through plastic address window of some junk mail), but I'm not sure that's what I want to do long-term. What I'm finding is that there are risks in handling the dial that I want to reduce--bending and creases that can get introduced during casing the watch. Ideally I'd be able to get some dial blanks (with feet if possible) made on very thin spring steel that I can glue the cardstock dial to, which would act as a good barrier between the fiber and the mechanical movement and act as reinforcement during assembly. But I haven't looked into it too much yet.

Unless whenever someone mentions your watch you proudly say it's a dhgate special? If so that's at least owning up to it and I'd respect it. But if you go along with it being real when people see it then it's cringe.

Also these Seiko "mods" would be more 1:1 than Pagani - but more expensive:

Does it have continuous off-gassing as it sits? Theres a known phenomenon of offgassing of chemicals in cars that causes windows to haze and require cleaning often because they're off-gassing without odor. I haven't noticed any issues with the paper glue so far in terms of offgassing (longest that I have has been cased for 3 months), but for the Loctite 414 CA glue I do have to wait until that's fully cured before I can case them, otherwise it will definitely deposit residue nearby on the outer plastic ring where the dial feet sit and the calendar ring. I screwed that up once.

i think a lot of the original smartwatch fad in the tech world centered around the Internet of Things phase that never really took off.

so now it mostly for biometric sensors, which is fine, but unless you have major health issues and need to monitor your oxygen levels and heart beat or something, then they don’t offer much other than notifications.

what’s interesting though is that Apple gave their watch an extremely accurate on-board quartz movement that on it’s own, without GPS/Bluetooth synch, keeps an accuracy of something crazy like 3.5 seconds per year. you can go read about tests people have done on watchuseek.

it just shows that if companies actually gave a damn they could innovate but sadly in terms of quartz innovation from standard manufacturers, things haven’t improved much. i believe Citizen is the one with the most accurate tech right now with their Calibre 0100

I don't think it exists, but I would want it too. Your best bet is a good quartz watche with tritium hands. What are your accuracy requirements? Do you really need more than 20 s/year? And the battery can last a really long time, while changing it is a 5 minute operation.

Yeah, in the 1930s.
JLC hasn't upgraded its caliber 822 since the early 90s (and even back then it was an upgrade from a 50 years old movement). Obviously it doesn't benefit from "modern tech" like shock resistance, anti-magnetism, higher power reserve, higher frequency, etc. By today's standards it's shockingly bad.

Watches "Triumph", mechanisms either "Vostok" or "Rocket", popular among the Russian Navy, submariners and polar explorers, can withstand pressure up to 10 bar, stainless steel, sapphire glass.
A 24 hour dial to keep you from going crazy underwater or on a polar day and the fluorescent paint glows in the dark.
They are not quartz because when working with a bunch of equipment that emits magnetic fields, quartz tends to stop and go astray. The price is about 300 dollars.

I don't hate watches. I just like the simplicity of a 1 watch collection. I like watches but don't see the need to build a impressive expensive collection. 1 nice watch is enough for me.

One and done I might consider a diver for its water resistance so I could wear it anywhere without worry - or maybe a GMT since GMT is the most useful complication IMO. I have a speedy reduced and I basically only use the chrono function as a fidget spinner.
