Buy it if you like it, but DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Those watches are very easy to franken because Rolex used a bunch of parts in common across many watches.

You want pictures of the all the case markings, inside and out, pictures of the movement, pictures of the bracelet endlinks and clasp markings. Make sure its particular dial variations matches up with known history, that the movement is correct, etc.

Fortunately, it's a pretty well-researched watch, so it won't be the needle in a haystack like researching pre-corporate Cartier, for example.

I've had a good look at both, first one is a later mode (mark 5 dial) and the serial number matches that. It's been sat in a safe for ages and it doesn't look as though it's been fucked around with, or even polished that much.

Second one is older, (ass end of mark 3 dial production) and has had a new bracelet put on but is a better watch in general and is local so I can check it out in person. Slightly more expensive too.

I've seen a grown man putting on a tantrum like a baby because the AD refused to sell him a Datejust.
People are literally willing to pay thousands to get some old rusty Rolex like this guy >>17490026
They'll even release a complete unwearable memewatch like pic related, ask 25k for it, and people will still pay 10k over retail to get it.

it's pretty common for most everyone with automatic watches to give them a swirl once in a while
some liken it to rolling brandy round in a snifter, but honestly you're just making the little wobbly thing in the back move in circles so watch go tick
give it a few rotations before you put it on in the morning, and then last thing at night when you take it off, unless you're planning on wearing something else the next day
also; it's fine to let them run down and not having any tension in the mainspring; possibly saves on maintenance in the long-term rather than having a winder causing them to be constantly working

There's different levels of that.

Even "experienced" watch guys who aren't 100% Rolex still keep one around for the simple fact that they're so damn reliable. They're like Adidas Sambas or Levis 501s.

Case in point, one of my friends, he's really into independents. He's got a bunch of early Daniel Roths, early Franck Mullers (the really complicated ones), Vianney Halter, Dufour, etc. Really super collection...

Thinking about it. I doubt I'd make any decent profit on it, since it takes about 4-6 hours to make the dial and put the watch together. If I do it more I'd probably be able to cut that in half, with a production line setup.
Cost breakdown:
Watch dial comes out to like ~$2 depending on the paper used by the time cutters and waste is factored in, but the is the most significant part here
NH35 movements are like $28 on aliexpress.
Cases I get off aliexpress are $34
Straps would $30-40, I could cheap out on this but don't want to.
Hands depending on the aesthetic are $5-15.
So overall cost is $99-119 per watch.
By the time taxes and any shipping/ecommerce fees are factored in I'd need to mark that up by ~80%, so looking at a sale price around $180-216. To be honest I think this is a hard sell, as the overlap of watch autists and 2hu enthusiasts is likely slim. So I'd have to cheap out pretty hard on the case, strap, and movement and try to rely on the dial itself to sell, which I don't really want to do.
And then taxes kick in and that complicates things, since I'd now have to start tracking everything in order to not get fucked by the IRS if I make anything noticeable.

Knife autist here: most people use them for opening packages and cutting fruit and steak. Occasional fine work if your job involves whittling things to fit or cutting off sprues. Most common casual EDC is a 3.5" tactical folder like this Hogue RSK or a 2.9" like a Kershaw Leek (which comes in a nice copper finish and is rather classy). Then you have traditional slipjoints like the Case which come in a variety of finishes and configurations, they're pretty classless other than indicating you can afford better than a chink made schrade. Slipjoints can go to the moon as far as rarity and limited runs. Below that is utility knives like the douk douks. They just work and you can sharpen them on a brick.

Finally, you have the gentleman knife, which doesn't have many quality representatives. I have an Ohta friction folder in cocobolo. It's a glorified pencil sharpener and letter opener. Also the most affordable handmade custom knife in the world. The black goatskin sheath is a nice added touch.

Usually an EDC has convenient one hand opening and closing for people who work or is a grandpa slipjoint for people who don't but also don't hang a picture with the heel of a shoe. If you're not really geared towards using a midsize pocket knife regularly, you won't find the utility. It's like a stopwatch or doing computations with a bezel, it sure is useful when you think to use it.

Oh please tell me no one has actually pulled out their edgy EDC knife out to cut a steak, what place serves steak but doesn't have steak knives? Packaging is all I've used my mini SAK for so far, I don't cut my fruit but I appreciate some people might not have the teeth for biting into an apple or something, but surely no one in recorded human history has started using what is basically a utility knife to start cutting their steak in public over a steak knife.

Stop buying statement watches. They're a dick measuring contest, not a debadged Mercedes saloon. It's an advertisement of values and a damn good one for knowing the worth and sensibilities of the man who wears it. It's like women with cats eye glasses and danger hair, they let you know to stay away. These watches aren't for you, yours say something different and equally damning.

There's actually a pretty refined method to this personality test as it's explicitly and implicitly agreed upon. You know what someone is trying to say by what they wear and can act accordingly. It's pretty brilliant actually, at least watching it from afar and knowingly making curveball choices.

>> No.17491795

>>17491739
Also, I might go with the scuba dial eventually. In that exact case. I've been putting this off since these shits were $35. I like the look you get when fellow watchfags know you're fucking with them and can't read you. It's like the F91w of dive watches. They know you know you're making a non-statement and it aggravates and intrigues them because no one gives a fuck about watch mechanics.

>>17491786
Pretty much. Personally my interest is only piqued by moon phases and vintage railroad precision. That triggers some flags in my brain what mean said asshole has taste and priorities the likes of which are useful to me.

I don't know what a statement watch is. I just want what I want. Otherwise I agree with your second part: buy it because you like it not because it'll get attention from others. However that can still lead to dumb shit.

Do /fa/ggots really sit on their front porch hoping someone will comment on their outfit?

>> No.17491821

Yep. Especially when its obnoxiously hipster like $600 boots that have never seen mud, jeans that are brand new and don't even have crease wear, flannel and a vest along with clean fingernails and a $120 beanie hat. That poster is likely a hipster in pac northwest. Theres a doofus I know that shows up wearing shit like that doing his best to get anyone to notice his brand new /fa/ accessory nobody would pay $20 for but brags about the $200 off he got on it.

>>17491814
Oh it can lead to the dumbest shit, still want that googie Hamilton from MiB.

A statement watch is formally a watch that makes a statement of how retarded and trend chasing you are, and informally is any statement about the wearer from any watch that can make a statement or non-statement. It sounds like everything is included and it is, but some don't say anything meaningful considering other factors.

You don't have eyes. The vest is old navy from 10 years ago, the flannel is worn and nothing to write home about other than not being total shit, redwings due for a resole that aren't even what color they originally were, old 501s I've definitely been rolling around in the mud with for 2 years. Otherwise I would completely agree with your assessment, it takes a lot of work for people who give a fuck to look like they don't give a single fuck.

>Hamilton from MiB
Wasn't that a watch from the 60s though? Like Elvis wore it and K was a huge Elvis fan so it was like an easter egg within the movie?

>Otherwise I would completely agree with your assessment, it takes a lot of work for people who give a fuck to look like they don't give a single fuck.
True. I know its a bit of a meme when people post those "get his look" memes where they go out and find the most expensive versions of cheap and ratty looking clothes like a $1200 shirt that looks like an old undershirt but there are people on /fa/ right now who think those are the better brands to buy. Those same people are in /wt/ who are convinced you must get a $6000 watch because its significantly better than a $100 one that looks nearly the same.

they look old, but not work-used old. *shrug* I don't look at men's footwear or clothing unless its out of place like crocs while walking on a roof, flip flops in a mechanic bay, or hunting boots on the beach. Similarly, if a hipster is trying desperately looking for a specific look and everything is out of place for an urban hipster looking for that /fa/ lumberjack look. The I'm totally not trying hard for that look but had to spend dozens of hours and thousands of dollars to achieve it.

There's no way it wasn't a 60s watch. Elvis was just tasteful enough to wear it.

It's not the watch or the story or any of that faggotry, it's how you wear it like these boots. You don't have to buy cred, it comes with life and wear. My favorite watch is my old swatch red sunday I took a spill on a bicycle on and broke the case trying to change the battery. Nolifers, posers because believe you me I meet the criteria for brew your own beer hipster, they want that but don't want to earn it by living life or shopping at goodwill.

The shop floor isn't the worst environment, they'd make it it like 6 months where a pair of Nick's would last a year in the field. I also clean and oil them every now and then, they're due for that resole so a man can do that when I get around to finding one in town.

¿Why not using specific work boots while working?, using leather boots at work feels like larping, ypu can have nice steel toed boots with goretex and nice stiff soles.

>> No.17491891

Really what clothes aren't larping though? Most clothes seem to be aimed at some kind of lifestyle which is ironic because most people are actually incredibly fucking boring and generally don't have lifestyles.

Even if you actually do have the lifestyle that your clothes imply you have, doesn't that make your 'fit drably cliche?

Drab chic is the only proof of authenticity left. If you don't look like a medieval peasant or some kind of worker you can date within a decade or two, you don't do shit worth a fuck. Even anon is clearly some kind of clerical worker and does a trade on the side judging by the stains and callouses in the right places. Clothes don't hide the hands and even the boots speak more than "he rides a motorcycle lol". Nigga does some squats and has a wide foot. This ain't sherlock shit.
