Alright /wt/, anon with the wacky, colorful shitters here. I’ve made another irresponsible purchase and require a good hazing from you fine gentlemen. While I’ve enjoyed my time buying unserviceable shitters for the price of a night out at the movies, Ive been wanting to put on my big boi pants and upgrade to serviceable shitters, with an emphasis on Made in USA/assembled in USA/an Amerifat sharted on it at some point timepieces, and this will be my first step into the format…

Let’s address the elephant in the room: everything about the watch is retarded. There’s no denying that. It would make a terrible one watch collection. But if you are, say, an anon with a whole collection of wacky shitters who enjoys a lil nonsense, well this makes for a decent addition to the collection.
It’s a Timex from the American Documents line, which is unique in that they’re the only sub 2k watch I could find that have ANY parts made in the US, not including watches with the Ameriquartz movement, which this doesn’t use for no good reason (instead it’s a Ronda, in reference to the hit single “Help Me Rhonda” by America’s band The Beach Boys, surely). The case, hands, dial, strap and mineral glass (in this case, Gorilla Glass) are all made and sourced from the US of A. I think the case and hands are done by an industrial company that doesn’t even make watch parts. I also believe Timex had to convert some spare room into an assembly room for this series. Kinda neat for a Dutch holding company.
What makes this particular model extra unique is that it’s a collaboration with the apparel company MadeWorn, aka some tatted up hipster who fucks up shirts by hand with a blowtorch and sandpaper then charges 200 bucks for it. He also did those custom engraved Rolex abominations you might have seen pictures of floating around the net. Apparently each case, hand and dial are uniquely fucked up, making no two the same.
Pretty neat if you can look past the astronomical price they were originally asking for: 850 smackers, with an original American Documents going for 500. It would take a ridiculous deal for me to satisfy my curiosity for the piece, which is exactly what happened. Timex got me once with a 60% off (rare even for them) Coca Cola Timex Q that I quite like, and they got me again with a very tempting pre tax price tag it 340, less than their currently on sale normal ADs which are at 400 atm, lol…

Obviously these weren’t hot sellers. No surprise, as it’s a dress watch that you can’t use in most dressy situations, and a beater with only 30m water resistance. It would take a specific type of retard to be happy with this shitter…
Anyways, onto the watch itself.
>Negatives
Previously mentioned water resistance/formal impracticality
24hr am/pm gmt dial when there’s no gmt hand to be found (AVGN: WHAT WERE THEY THINKING)
Black hands on a half black dial make it very impractical in low light
The hands are split asymmetrically down the middle so it’ll look the hour hand is behind by a couple minutes sometimes, depending on the angle (ocd anons need not apply)
…and you thought fauxtina was obnoxious
>Positives
It’s neato
Ignoring the quirks, the dial is one of Timex’s best
I can’t emphasize enough how unusual a made in USA body is, especially for sub 2k (besides, say, the occasional dude who will make custom Casio cases for 200 hundy and sell them off Instagram)
Very nice, comfortable suede strap from S B Boot Tanning, the dudes that do leather for Red Wing Boots
The finishing is pleasant for what it’s going for, and again, an Amerishart hand finishing something for a watch this cheap is non existent (even if the finishing is more like “fucking up”)
Initial complaints of scratch marks on the other AD watch hands is a non issue here
Initial complaints of the AD watches looking boring is a non issue here
Nice brass case back and crown
Reminds me of Adventureland in Disneyland

Conclusion: I can understand why every sane watch collector and insane member of /wt/ would hate it or simply dismiss it as a costume watch to wear as a steampunk cosplayer to Comic Con. In many ways, you’re correct. On the other hand, it’s a piece that is too weird to live, too rare to die. Thank you for reading my blogpost.
Now please, if you will, roast the shitter to your hearts content.

I'm looking to get my first "entry" watch, and I really like the look of the Seiko 5 SBSA005, especially the orange dial. My only concern is, the diameter is 42.5mm, and my wrist is 17cm, will it be too big? If so, are there any slightly smaller alternatives? (with an orange dial if possible!)

>> No.17478631

>>17478624
It has a 42.5mm dial, but the lug to lug is only 46mm, it will be fine on your wrist. Typing SRPD59 might give you better prices.

>> No.17478642

>>17478631

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated! I thought acceptable watch size was determined by the relationship between wrist circumference and watch diameter. I didn't realise that the lug-to-lug distance was another factor.

SRPD59 is indeed a bit cheaper. Is it just a different reference for the SBSA005?

Thanks again!

Welcome to the micro-brand hell.

Only RGM makes a full US movement (defined as made in USA, by mostly USA parts, and by a company owned by Americans.) Everyone else is a micro-brand using Swiss or Jap movements. FTS does not count, fully owned subsidiary of Titan watch, Indian (not native American) company.

Here is a list I made for my own notes:
Vortic, Autodromo, Devon, Shinola, Weiss, RGM, Brew, Kobold, Oak & Oscar, Mercer, Lum-Tec, Timex American Documents series, Keaton Myrick, Dufrane, Throne, Detroit, Pelton, Nodus, Haven, Smith & Bradley, Montana, Schon, Martenero, Astor & Banks, MKII, Padron.

All at least assembled in USA by US owned company.

Just about everything else is US based company making watches in other countries.

I think I want quartz? I want something highly reliable and accurate that I wont have to take in for a repair 24/7.

day/date would be nice to have. I want it to be thinish (not a diver watch). IDM if the watch is just splashproof

I'm not sure here. I want something lightish so that might eliminate a metal strap. I tried on some metal watches but they made me feel like a gigantic tryhard. So probably leather or nylon?

if Seiko discontinues the any watches from the current lineup, they too will shoot up to in prices like the SARB. People will be wanting the latest movement they can get, they will look back fondly on the new designs too, no matter whether you like them or not. but they will never reach collector's status. none of these, not even the SARB have alpinist written on the dial. For this reason alone, they will never be sought after except because someone like this color or design better than another. Nothing more. Exceptions of course, for the Ginza dial alpinist. Top Watch Retailer Shares Crash As Rolex Bubble Deflates

The good news is everyone who didn't panic buy a Rolex during Covid might want to start shopping around as prices have steadily dropped over the last two quarters.

IMO the Aqua Terra is the ultimate midwit watch.
It looks too sophisticated to be a tool watch and too sturdy to be a dress watch (muh "smart casual"). It was obviously designed to look expensive and just the right amount of blingy. Unironically a fashion watch.
I can't say I hate it, it's nice, but I just can't picture myself wearing it.
It's the perfect shitter for 100 IQ smart-ass middle managers though.

A lot of those supposed "Ultra luxury" brands have such horrific depreciation that you can usually get them used for less than the price of a Rolex Datejust, in perfect condition too, since the story with them usually goes:
>Buyer "needs" a dress watch.
>Buys a ultra-lux watch (not a Patek, though, of course)
>Buyer realizes he never wears the watch because he never gets dressed-up
>Sells watch, takes enormous loss
>Used buyer "needs" a dress watch.
>Used buys a ultra-lux watch (not a Patek, though, of course)
>Used buyer realizes he never wears the watch because he never gets dressed-up
>Sells watch, takes enormous loss
>...
>Some guy buys a ultra-lux watch that's been worn twice for 5k USD.
