Since it was posted at the end of the last thread... Leaning towards 36mm, just don't like having to wait.

Bros. What should I get?

>brand new Rolex Explorer 36mm
>used Rolex Explorer 39mm
>7" wrists

I was leaning towards the 39, but I tried the 36 and it was actually not bad. Not as small as I thought. 39mm is lightly scratched and $12k, a huge ripoff I know. 36mm is $7.5k but at least a year waiting.

What do?

I'm on the waiting list for a 41mm OP, personally with that and the explorer I prefer it in a 41mm case but the 36mm will most likely be more fashionable & collectible in the long run. Rolex is always like that, it's like they think their customers are dumb enough to fall for those tactics, instead of offering real value

The current 41 datejusts are actually 39mm. It's too bad the current 36mm explorer has 19mm lug width, it makes it look too feminine. I had a 36mm Stowa with 18mm lug width, tried to cope that it didn't look too small on 7.25 inch wrists. Even the 36mm OP and Datejusts look alright with 20mm lug width, gives it that little extra presence

TAG feels very durable, I've had it just over 2 years now and the only signs of wear is on the strap. I picked the leather because I prefer the look and when I've had cheaper watches in the past with a metal bracelet my arm hair got caught in it a bunch. The vostok was £80 off Etsy (around 90 euros or 100 dollars). I only got the vostok a few weeks ago so haven't worn it much but the tag has been nothing but good to me so far. (I've worn it daily for a year and a half out of the 2 years I've had it).

Feels good to wear, comfy, not very heavy you forget you have it on after an hour or so. Not overly thick or chunky either which makes it a near perfect daily for me.

Anyone here service their own automatics? Any recommended routes to learning this as a hobbyist with pretty limited funds as somebody with good general mechanical/materials knowledge? I've heard pocketwatches are a good place to start, which makes sense as the movement's bigger, any ubiquitous pocketwatch movements to look for used, to get into the swing of things?

Reason: I recently got into watches and bought a bambino 38mm which arrived on the day I took my newborn son home from hospital, so it has already got a lot of sentimental value to me and I'd like to pass it on to him some day. Wasn't quite conscious of how uneconomical they were to get serviced at the time though, so I would like to be able to keep it ticking myself. Also I love tinkering with intricate/mechanical things like this and begin to have aspirations of hoards of janky repaired Seiko fives etc...

The watch itself is very nice. The AR coating on the crystal makes it look invisible. The lume is ok. Raised indices look great and the bracelet looks great but the clasp has no micro adjust so it can be hard to get right. Made me realize I don't like the Oyster case, very plain and boring. If you can get it on sale and want something pretty to look at, I'd recommend it, but it's kind of a fake Rolex so I'd be a little self-conscious wearing it.

Time's not a major issue for me, would this be enough to get along with for a load of old seiko fives etc? https://www.cousinsuk.com/product/watchmakers-master-service-kit-bergeon-swiss that kind of money is not out of the question, I don't really have any interest in watches over about £500, not into chronographs either, orients, seikos, timex marlin etc is my kind of thing. Would I quickly end up wanting another grand's worth of tools after this?

>> No.17433943

>>17433926
Yes that's a reasonable kit. It's expensive as you're paying bergeon prices for some things that are non-critical (such as the blower, pliers, and case opener knife) You'd be fine to service basic movements with that. It is missing a couple things: a loupe (preferably two; one medium magnification like 4x and one higher like 10x) and a movement holder.
You still need to get lubricants and oilers; you'll need the basic movement lubricants plus some braking grease for the mainspring. https://www.jewelerssupplies.com/lubricant-kit-for-mechanical-watches-moebius-640.8500.K.html
There's a good intro video here that summarizes where you can cheap out that may help bring some costs down https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tl7xNPvmyM

>> No.17434005

>>17433943
Thanks, will probably eventually try and replicate such a kit with a few additions and omissions of case knives etc. to see if it comes out any cheaper. In the meantime I might dip my toes into some ebay junk pocketwatches with my noname screwdrivers and spudgers I have for fixing my phone :DDD.

>> No.17434048

>>17434005
A bit more advice; you can do without a timegrapher by using your phone and a watch accuracy meter app to start with. This will get you at least close, but it's not the easiest to use.
Cleaning solutions; read up on this. I recommend avoiding ammoniated solution as you can easily damage the brass with it. Naptha (lighter fluid) works well, but won't do anything to brighten the brass/remove oxidation. Rinse afterward in 99.9% isopropyl and dry. Make sure to get some rodico and finger cots; be very careful about keeping things clean after you go through the cleaning process. Good luck it's a very fun and rewarding hobby.

literally anything that isn't needlessly cluttered with shit you'll never use. Whats with the tachymeter in km/h on a fucking watch? You'll never need to estimate the speed of something over 1 kilometer with your watch. The sub dials are redundant data but generally only used for timing laps on a race car or horse track. Shit nobody fucking does with their wristwatch. Taht gay little checkered flag is trying to remind you of what the watch was "designed" for, but nobody ever uses.

Its cluttered and the equivalent of wearing a racing team's T-shirt hoping someone will come along asking you to time them on their 37 second lap in their race car. Its the sum of looking busy so nobody notices its actually a $40 watch.

Citizen makes many other eco-drive watches that last about 10 or so years because of the solar panel behind the dial, pick one that doesn't look like some bullshit race team leader and trying too hard to be anything but a watch.
