Bought a surplus soviet one lads
Wasn't prepared for quite how dramatic it is, it fits me correctly but the shoulders are very padded
Thinking of cutting the bottom off to bring it up to knee length, do you think a tailor would be able to make the sleeves taper more?

It will still be very dramatic unless you get it severely modified. I'm undecided if you should alter it at all. I mean, it might look like shit if you cut the lenght to knee level with that double chest. Maybe trim it just a little bit, an inch or two tops. And yeah, perhaps dp something about the slerves, it looks too tight on the torso compared to how baggy the slerves are. If I were you I'll wear it a lot as is for the remainder of winter to see if it grows on you, abd if it doesn't, either alter it or resell. Something similar happebed to me with a jacket. Ended up loving it as it is.

This is exactly what happened to me
I own a somewhat similar coat. It's an old firemans coat and originally had silver coloured buttons.
I wore it out exactly one time and instantly realized that I look like some sort of military general stolen valour.
Especially since it had silver buttons on the epaulettes as well which almost looked like star ranks.

I have since replace the buttons with regular black ones and now it just looks like a heavilly structured long overcoat but is none the less just a normal overcoat.
I haven't thrown away the original buttons and if I ever see fit, I can put them back on

Greatcoats made of wool are a little much imo, the us military has regular cotton coats that’s usually only about 50-100$ online in black navy and I think green? They come with removable fur liners. Even if you live out of the country, usually it’s only about 25-50$ more to ship basically worldwide

Black Chinos and straight cut dress pants only. Overcoats are usually very classy, so you’ll need to look at least somewhat put together. No jeans. Wing tipped boots or derby’s. If you want to add military flair: vibram lug sole derbys. You could probably get away with brown or navy. And your choice of button up shirt and solid color wool scarf.

No stupid hats, either.

I disagree with this. I would keep it as authentic as possible. I think you should change the buttons, since there's one missing anyway. Pick something more subtle like black or grey and replace them. It's a minimally invasive change that will make your coat look less cosplay-y
