Men like mechanical watches because
>they're non-faggy jewelry (ie they have an actual use)
>they require a lot of work and engineering, which is a thing only men can appreciate imo
>they remind us of simpler and better times when hi-tech wasn't all around us
And let's not kid ourselves
>flexing

In fact, I don't understand how some men can't appreciate mechanical watches. Time is a weird concept that goes beyond our comprehension, and yet we can somehow understand it by looking at this wrist thing animated by just a few tiny gears.
When you really think about it, mechanical watches are an attempt to make timeless objects that also tell the time. I find this kind of poetic.

So do smart watches, except it's front loaded. In fact to make even one smart watch it probably takes like a million people in thousands of occupations.

>they remind us of simpler and better times when hi-tech wasn't all around us
I'm 38 and time before hi-tech was pretty shitty from my perspective. Imagine a time where you couldn't look up average dick size and had to worry about whether you measure up or not. Or when you had to wait in line at a bank. Or when there was one telephone line you access to and that was it. It doesn't bear thinking about.

It's a fashion shitter, some of them actually do look rather well, but at the end of the day it's still a fashion first and watch second. Mine looked stunning in the shopping window, so stunning i came back 3 days later and bought it (after i just bought a decent watch), but is otherwise almost completely illegible. Thin, shiny hands against a shiny dial, numbers and letters so small you struggle to read them, can't tell the time if it's sunny, or cloudy, or dark, only if the light is just right. Second hand misses all the markers and setting the minute hand accurately is tricky. It's thin and light though (titanium case) and the integrated milanese bracelet is comfy. Looks kinda nice though, but all in all not worth the money, at all. I wore it like 15 times in 6 years. I was joking on selling it, it's not worth the money and i'll probably gift it to someone.

Could be, but I'm more inclined to believe the 71 date. But who knows what's really true when it comes from watches of that era. Even manufacturers for the most part have no idea what was really happening back then with regular production run watches. Now add all the prototypes, early samples, pre-production,... and it gets really fun.
For example, I once found a Casio watch, and wanted the manual. So I asked them, if they could help me with that. They had no idea they ever made that watch/module. And yes, it was an original. Ended up selling it to a hardcore Casio collector for primo bucks.

All the reasons you mention don't apply exclusively to mechanical watches. First thing you mentioned is "actual use", mechanical watches are the least useful timekeeping devices today. Then you mentioned all the work and engineering in which mechanical watches don't excel in any way when compared to something like a smartphone or a car. Then it's the whole "no tech" point which you can accomplish with a pen and paper or a knife. You are surrounded with by "no tech" shit but you don't grab a spoon an go "wow holy shit I love the lack of tech in this spoon, yum!". Finally the flexing, and this is the biggest lie. There is an infinite number of things to flex today and calling it a reason is the biggest lie you can tell yourself.

Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against people liking mechanical watches, they are cool and interesting and attract men's attention. I just can't suspend my disbelief enough to fall for the marketing or lie to myself. So when you say:
>I don't understand how some men can't appreciate mechanical watches.

Yeah, there are some regulars who have nice watches. There are a few trolls who occasionally post a pic of a watch or collection that they downloaded from reddit and claim it's their own, but generally people don't 'fake' their watches here. Poorfags are just happy they can post their shitty watches in the same place with the big guys and they feel no need to pretend they are richer than they really are.

I just got interested in watches like a few days ago and I've already developed a taste for very expensive (mainly skeleton) luxury watches. The best looking ones for me so far being Jacque-Droz's Grande seconde and Hermes' skeleton moon. Some "normal" luxury watches can be nice but just not nearly as appealing, not to even mention non-luxury ones. How cringe/fucked am I?

Pic related, such distinguished artistry but costs probably like 100k

problem with skeletons is that it's often bloody hard to see the hands, so the watch may be great in every way... except for the one thing it's actually supposed to do, i.e tell you the fucking time. i own a beautiful, gold rotary skeleton, looks amazing... takes about 5 minutes of squinting to tell what the fucking time is. kind of a big problem really innit,
