What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
No they are filled with synthetic materials aimed at instant comfort but will not hold up to actual use.
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

Looking to buy two pairs of boots for the Chicago winter. One for more casual use (walking between classes, 10-20 min walks) and another one for heavier use (6-7 hours of walking twice a week).

For the more casual boots I found a couple options that I like visually and just need some help narrowing them down. I plan to use Sno Seal on them.
MP-Sherman Plain Toe (Dainite Sole) *Closeout
Nick's "Falcon" Classic Configuration
Carmina CHROMEXCEL 80179 SOLLER COMANDO SOLE
Oat Street Bootmakers Brown Chromexcel
Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill Boot with Chromexcel Leather
Alden Indy's Brown Chromexcel

As for the heavy-use boots, I still don't really have any idea as to what I should get.

Any reccs for some lace up boots in Australia that aren't too expensive, sort of like pic related? RMs are beyond my budget and I was looking at Blundstone (since they're half the price) but I've heard their quality has gone to shit since they moved their manufacturing to China.

Ideal budget would be about $200 but I'd go up to $300. They'll be taking a beating as daily shoes, hence not wanting to burn a lot of money on them.

Question on Red Wing sizing: I want to get a pair of Moc Toes 875.
I already own Iron Rangers and they fit me great after break in (heel slip disappeared, enough toe room). The same size/width in 875 was kinda snug, with toes touching in the front, while half size up had some heel slippage.
Generally, you'd suggest same size to break in (not really sure about that) or half size up (+insole if needed)?
Thank you.

Does shoe polish stain clothes after it dries? I've got some black shoe polish for my boots but I was thinking of putting a bit of it on the leather under my car's gear shifter because it's a bit old and worn, but I wonder if that will stain the cuffs of my shirt for days after?

Tried local? I went to a shop in my neighboring small-ish town that sells leather shoes and boots and they had a small room adjacent to the store with stuff -80% off so I picked up some dress shoes and boots that would've been about 160eur if you bought them from the front. For some reason almost all the stuff in the backroom was larger men's sizes 44-50+, probably because the old lady only puts pictures of women in the front windows.
Back when online stores were becoming a thing everyone was saying you shouldn't pay the markup at those brick and mortar local places but it seems now people sleep on those back room sales sometimes especially if there isn't a lot of younger thrifter type women in the neighborhood. In the big city you can't find sizes though if anything's on sale.

I got my Vibergs today

Photos tomorrow now it's very dark

I am glad I went 0.5 size up because I have wide feet and high instep, they feel pretty much perfect with a tiny bit of heel slip but that will go away

The stitching is extremely tight and delicate, the welt is not big at all. I have never seen stitchdown before, I thought it would be bulky.
Brown chromexcel is also a bit more red than I thought, I like it a lot and it smells good. Touching it has a bit of a waxy feel, reminds me of cordovan sometimes. There's even a bit of a white film in some spots, I think it must be stuff coming out of the leather.

The leather is very thick, except the tongue which is thin. The insole feels thick. Especially at the heel, it's very comfy. The shaft is unlined except at the top.

The finishing is basically Carmina level which means almost perfect but not quite. The stitching is a little bit off at one end, the dainite sole has been sanded a bit diagonally in some of the edges, but like with Carmina these are all things that will never be visible unless very closely inspected.

Cost me 680€ with VAT and all. I thought it's a good price for Vibergs.

I've tried Rain in 9.5 UK and length was good but width was not. Too tight. It's a chisel last with a bit of a square toe and those are always a little longer.
The suede boots are Forest 9.5 UK. They are snug if a little tight but bearable. The length is good but it's marginal. If it's been a long day and my feet swell my smaller toes begin to touch when I walk.

In Enzo Bonafe I have tried 363Mod in 9.5UK and it was clearly too short. But a lot of people go half a size up for that.

For these Vibergs I went size 10. They felt really good when I put them on.

You seem knowledgeable so I'll ask.
I've recently ordered MTO suede derbies from Carmina in the Forest EEE last because my feet are quite wide. I went with size 10 UK, as my feet are 28-29 cm in length.
I'm still early in the production window, so I always considered writing them to maybe size up to 10.5, I'm simply not used to buying size 10 at all (with most brands it's 10.5 or even 11), but then again that's because they only offer standard width.
What are the dimensions of your feet? Is it OK to go true to size in the forest last if width has already been taken into account? I don't want them to be too loose after the break-in either.

>> No.17321923

>>17321904
28-29cm is too much of a gap to say for sure, you need more precision
My feet are like 28.3cm and I think most brands will tell you that if you're between 28-28.5cm you should take 9.5 UK.
This has been generally true for me, but if you plan to wear thicker wool socks when maybe half a size up is not a bad idea.

To give you an idea, Carmina told me that if you go from Forest to Forest EEE you gain twice as much width as you do when going up 0.5 a size in the same last.

>> No.17321988

>>17321923
>To give you an idea, Carmina told me that if you go from Forest to Forest EEE you gain twice as much width as you do when going up 0.5 a size in the same last.
That's very interesting to know, thank you. I think I'm closer to 29 than to 28 cm, maybe 28.8 or something. Hard to tell by the millimeter if you're not equipped with that foot measurement thing professionals use. I'm not wearing thick socks at all, so I guess I'll stay with the initial size of 10.
Absolutely looking forward to them, they're my fist pair of Carmina and at the same time the most I've ever spent on a single pair. Ordering them took a big leap of faith, I knew that my choices in EEE lasts would be very limited if I did not make use of their MTOs, which are not returnable of course.

Too many young adults, students and hipsters snagging it all up. You'd expect older people to be more frequent customers of brick and mortar stores but it seems like many of them actually don't bother visiting places other than the big warehouse style places where you can get food, clothing, home appliances all in the same building. If I were you I would double check with Carmina, if you send them an email they can give you the precise measurements of the insole of the Forest EEE last on size 10 and 10.5.
Although the people anwering are not always very bright and do not take into account that feet should not fit exactly into the insole measurements and there should always be a little extra room, but you can calculate that yourself.

Shoes can stretch a bit sideways after break in but they will never stretch lengthwise at all.
Width is easier to get right on derbies, and also on suede which is very soft, but length is not salvageable if you get it wrong.

To go a tier above what I normally buy, I was thinking black Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill weatherproof+lugged. After lurking these threads I get the impression that AE occupies a kind of hour-glass pinch in the options between what I normally buy and what's our there. Options for very impressive boots seem to blossom at the pricepoint immediately above AE. Is this true? Do you have any recommendations for all black lifestyle boots a tier above AE and is that jump worth it?
Thanks and sorry for the actual autism.

Not a boot but Skoak has a GMTO for Enzo Bonafe reverse split toe derbies.
Comes out to like 700€ which is not a bad price for a handwelted shoe from one of the top tier makers.

Leather is brown calf. Sole is leather with topy.
The 363Mod last is high instep, relatively wide in the toebox but a little short. Be careful length wise.
Bonafe reverse stitching is second to none and their fudged welts go really well with this type of more casual dress shoes.

I think it's great for everyday office wear.

Enzo Bonafe "Balway" design (field boot)
in Color 6 (six) Horween shell

Although EB's special relationship with Horween shell is well known, the "balway" design is exclusive to a specific US retailer who also sources his own Horween shell (and even different shades of the same shell color) so I don't know if EB can do color 6 any time you ask for it or if you have to go through Lorenzo specifically. I don't even know how frequently Horween makes it.

Pretty sure those Goodyears will do that, too. I don't know what you do for work, but it looks like your shoes need to withstand some kind of abuse over the months. so it's like color 8 but worse in every respect?
dude the "rare" shell thing is such blatant artificial scarcity/hype marketing bullshittery it's comical people actually talk about it like it's anything noteworthy
carmina has all the horween shell colors that don't suck, and most of the special snowflake ones as well, available all year round
the rarity, supposedly, comes from the "best" shell without any defects being selected but that would mean natural shell would be the rarest since it shows everything, but it's one of the more widely available colors
horween just dye the leather a different way, it's as simple as that, nothing more to it, they even have eyefucking ultraviolet splatter shell, it's not rare, it's just disgusting, why would they make it on a regular basis other than novelty for some retard wallet maker
pretty sure you can thank alden for most of this fuckery with their rolex-tier bussiness model of selling through their boutique stores exclusively, that may graciuosly put you on a waiting list for rare shell if you buy enough of their garbage or you know a guy who knows a guy at "Alden of Oklahoma City" or "Alden of Fort Wayne"
obviously as a manufacturer you need to have a relationship with horween, but once you do they will produce any color you want once you request it
grant stone chinamen got fucking not-cigar shell, so what does that tell?
horween themselves produce color 8. black and maybe natty/bourbon/amaretto/lightishbrownwithboozename on a regular basis themselves making it more available, because those are the colors that don't look like garbage, age nicely and actually sell
you could buy black shell, make boots out of them and call it color 128 ultra rare shell and people would jizz and scalp them on reddit for 3 times the price

i don't think that's how it works, though
where did you get that from?
you don't put an intense red color through the exact same dyeing process again and get a chocolate brown color #4, then you do that twice more and get an eggplant color #8
obvious to anyone with functioning eyes it's a mix of several dye components of red/brown/violet at varying concentrations arranged by numer according to brightness and not the same dye applied x ammount of times

what are you using someone's blog as a source?
last sentence makes it clear the guys is talking out of his ass
you fucking dye a leather once not fucking 8 or 16 times
color 4 and 8 is a historical name, which horween and others took over and refers to the ammount of dye in the mixture used in the past, color 4 had 4 parts, 8 had 8
the naming convention stuck and refers to the brightness of a general color profile, which isn't 100% set and agreed upon
see color 8 cxl, which looks quite different to their shell color
>dude it has to be the exact same dye for cxl and shell, i'm autistic and it says color 8 on both, duh
maybe the dye in the past was the same dye 2x more concentrated by the manufacturer that first made it, but it clearly isn't today and horween absolutely certainly mixes the red and brown differently for each of the colors and even for each batch of dye of the same color yo fucking sperg

that's usually not the case, but crepe does get a little weird when it gets old. thing is most cobblers probably don't stock crepe soles

Steve is a treasure and I wish we could clone him because once he retires or dies the cobbler trade mostly goes as well. he's one of the last few remaining greats
there's some young blood like Cobbler Sunny who is good and Wyatt and Dad (obviously not the dad but the sons are young) aren't bad either.
Trenton and Heath I really fear are gonna get too far removed from being cobblers and start focusing too much on being bootfluencers and growing their youtube channel and shilling their products instead of growing their business, but they're competent cobblers (Heath is a MUCH better cobbler than Trenton though)

I just tried on the 875 but I had a complete opposite feeling, with external toes touching in the front due to a narrower last. First/second toes were fine.
I guess I'll have to size up since usually leather doesn't break in in that region and lengthwise.

Ok so for comparison here's my Carmina suede boots in Forest last

Compared to the vibergs these are much tighter at the ball and vamp, and sometimes they pinch my pinky toe a little bit
They're not uncomfortable, just snug. I think suede helps here.

Because I have a high instep I actually have to skip the last speed hook in order to have enough lace length to tie them easily.
The insole is more rigid than the vibergs but they have a commando sole so they're very comfy.

2030 CXL 8, went 1 down from usual US size and brannock, fits extremely well with lighter socks probably a bit snug with thick socks. I am 277mm length 111mm width (mid-end of day, thick socks).
