Okay, this is fucking stupid. This is just a modern batch of MI for $30. If you buy MI for any reason whatsoever when this exists, I'm going to come to your house and spit in your mouth. >Can I just buy essential oils and smear them on instead of fragrances?
You need to find decent information about if they are skin safe and in what concentrations, avoid the weird pyramid scheme essential oil companies and go for the ones that supply perfumers.
Eden botanicals usually has good info and good quality essential oils.
https://www.edenbotanicals.com
Some of the best oils are sandalwood oil, orange blossom/neroli, patchouli, lavender, oud (pureoudh.com) trees like spruce fir hinoki and cedar, geranium, frankincense, rose, co2 ginger, elmi and other resins, most flower absolutes concretes etc.
What you should probably do is buy some empty roller bottles, a bottle of clarified coconut oil (the stuff at the grocery store that is liquid at room temperature or https://www.edenbotanicals.com/products/essential-oils-pure-therapeutic-grade/essential-oils-c-d/fractionated-coconut-oil-organic.html ) and then you can cut oils that are too strong to use directly, start out with something like a 50/50 blend of essential oils and coconut oil and go from there.

nah. there have been studies and fragrances/smells in general can only trigger migraines. people get headaches from fragrances purely based on autosuggestion, which is powerful. they relate unrelated headaches to certain frags and then get them again when they smell the frag. doesn't occur in regular studies as there are only few people, who are usually from the frag com, who associate frags with headaches, anyway. that being said, many people just say they get a headache from it because they don't like it. it's an end-all way of terminating the discussion, because you have no way to prove them wrong (except for signing them up to the next study on the topic).

I got Milestone because of a similar opinion online. There seems to be a huge consensus on this. I have CDNIM and have smelled Aventus, you could tell of course, but in a busy, passable walkway or office, most people won't. You really have to give a fuck what Aventus is in the first place. Thinking of getting Tres Nuit just to complete the set. I also hope they clone Himalaya.

Tres Nuit isn't bad, but if you're going for a GIT clone, L'Aventure Knight is the same price and it's much closer. Tres Nuit kind of smells like the dry down of Green Irish Sneed but it lacks the super earthy opening, and to me that's the best part. That being said, neither TN or LK are as close to GIT as Milestone is to MI. But I haven't smelled Tres Nuit in a while and it seems like Armaf is continually making their clones better these days. Bois Imperial is the truth. A serious compliment MONSTER.

Pasted pieces from my posts on basenotes last few days of wearing Bois Imperial…

Thursday:

Ended up wearing Bois Imperial to the beach. Used about 7 sprays. Holy shit it projects and with sillage. Sprayed at 11:45am… at around 4:30Pm when putting my shirt on to leave the beach one of the girls with us goes ‘omg is that smell coming from you? You keep circling back and forth and I smell it in the air ugh it smells so fucking good’ so I pull up my tshirt and go ‘this here?’ She presses her nose to it and goes ‘omg yes its soooo good’

Last night: Got a compliment again on Bois Imperiale last night. Thats twice in 2 days. Was paying at the register of a steakhouse and the girl told me I smell really good

Today:
Ok this is not normal. As I was walking out of the locker room from the gym at the front desk the manager goes ‘is that Creed?’ I go ‘no Bois Imperial’ he’s like ‘I smelled you from all the way over there’

3 days in a row on compliments for Bois Imperial. Only time that ever happened was Aventus circa 2011

The elitism of niche fragrances is a meme. There's good products at all price points be it designer or niche. Designer fragrances are generally safer scents and will get you more compliments than niche scents because niche scents that are worth it are more complex and require experienced noses to truly appreciate.
I've got a large collection consisting of both designer and niche products and I prefer designer fragrances because they smell more pleasing to myself and the people around me.
Niche fragrances are a rabbit hole and trust me I've spent thousands on this hobby.

Another thing is that niche frags (and “niche” depends on where you live. I live in a small country that doesn’t spend much on fashion and Aventus is pretty rare) may not get effusive praise, but they don’t smell bad and they usually have good silage and longevity.
For these reasons, over time people will associate you with that smell and depending on what sort of person you’re like, that smell will have positive or negative associations.
There is a strong connection between smell recognition, memory and emotion so a unique and pleasant scent can become part of your calling card.

As is Eros Flame. And I still stand by Royal Copenhagen Monarch. That one gives off some nice autumn woods vibes.

Seconding LADMM blind-buy, but not Lonestar Memories. LM smells like old books bound in leather, being carried in dusty leather saddlebags on an old leather saddle. People review it like this a lot, that it reminds them of what a cowboy might smell like, but it's actually the smell of his saddle. It certainly makes fragheads happy, since you can imagine your own story to it, but past that there is no blind-buy appeal. A sample is a good start, a decant would be enough for most, except the few who for whatever reason want to make it their signature.

Congratulations, you got yourself a Tauer sample set. Put in LADDM and those 4 and you get a nice metal box with a ribbon.
I have sampled LADDM, ACDD, L'Oudh, Une Rose de Kandahar and Lonestar Memories and bought a Sundowner sample elsewhere during a sampling round. LADDM is the only one I could see anyone who is into frags blind-buying. Maybe ACDD due to the similarities to LADDM. Can't say anything about Phthaloblue and L'Air des Alpes Suisses. Sundowner is a great tobacco frag with some slight vanilla in the background (and slight mushrooms, once you've smelled them in L'Oudh), not very sweet, but not necessarily blind-buy worthy unless you have literally every other tobacco frag.

Fun fact:

This Antonio Banderas fragrance was originally going to be what we know today as Invictus. Oliver Cresp created it for Paco Rabanne, and finally the brand rejected it, they say, because they got mad at Cresp and accepted an Anne Flipo-Olivier Polge formula instead. The Antonio Banderas company bought Olivier Cresp's formula and turned it into a cheapie that in my opinion is better than Invictus.

I know two people from the industry in Spain and France who confirm that this is true. And that even Cresp was a little upset because it was known that an Antonio Banderas perfume was his kek.

the further away from the mainstream something is the more likely people will love it or hate it intensely instead of mildly approving of it. small companies have to make products like this to turn profitable because they can't compete with the big dogs on the marketing / cost efficency of mass appeal products (or in the case of the fragrance industry they don't want to since they're probably owned by the same mega conglomerate)
this applies to literally fucking every product that cannot be measured by an objective metric.

Very nice, but what I’m asking is something else.
As hard as it is to believe now, Creed used to be a no-name blackwater, and owes everything it became to a single once-in-a-lifetime frag (plus some unscrupulous marketing)
My question is: do any of these quirky little overpriced colognes have what it takes to be an Aventus or are you all just trying to stand out in the only way you can.
Not by being better but just by being different, regardless of how offputting it may be.

Not that anon. In my experience, its really simply just case-by-case. You have to sniff them for yourself, whether through samples or in-store. Some of them really are complex and nice at the same time, while others are just fragshitter memes. I will say though, most of them fall into the second category - they smell bad because they are trying to be different just for the sake of being different.
But again: the only real way to know is to sniff for yourself. Online reviews are a VERY rough guide at best.

I’ve tried some of the Frederic Malle stuff because it was meme’d so hard here and I’ll say this: the performance is good.
You make a good point with the blind buy sunk cost fallacy.
I think a big part of why the price is so obnoxiously high for some of these frags isn’t the materials or the design process, it’s insurance that whoever bought it is now that much more invested in the fragrance being good.
If you bought Ropion’s “the night” for $20 and it was shit, if people asked you, you would say it was shit.
But you buy it for $1000 (and no, there are no samples to be had, thank you very much) so now you have an incentive to lash out at “noselets” who “don’t get it”
You have effectively paid a G to work part time for Malle’s PR department.
