/boot/ - Boot General - Leg Day Edition

What do I need to care for my boots?
>Old cotton t shirt (one for cleaning, another for applying conditioners)
>Horsehair brush ($10-15)
>Wooden shoe trees ($10-15)
>Light conditioner like Lexol/Bck4
>Heavy conditioner (if you live in terrible snow/rain areas) Sno seal/Obernauf LP

How do I deal with x stain?
>mud: allow it to dry then brush off
>salt: water and cloth as soon as possible
>saturated wet: allow the boot to dry for a full day, stuff with newspaper
>scuffs and scratches: buff vigorously with horsehair brush

>Should I buy turdsdays/soloshits/doc shitans?
no
>b-b-but muh ecelebs on youtube said they're good
no. you will waste your time and money and still have uncomfortable footwear at the end of the day. spend the extra $100 and get something real.

I had the Original English Doc Martens and the tongue on my left foot ripped off after a nice day in the rain. Fucking sucked. They never "got more comfy as I broke them in" either. I was glad to throw them in a trashcan outside of my workplace.

I don't know if custom wesco firestormer's are a good alternative to custom whites. There is no double midsole option, only two leather options, and just a few other things that kind of put me off not being able to choose. They do however have the option for semi lace to toe which I think looks neat, but not as customizable when it comes to height. I am entertaining the idea of buying lightly used smokejumpers since there are a few in my size length wise on ebay, I just have to measure for width.

Is there any real reason to hate zippers on boots except "I don't like how they look"?

I don't own any boots with zippers, but I tried a pair on in a shop and I was tempted to get them just for it, putting them on and off is so quick, while usually just ramming my feet in my boots is a fucking chore

>> No.17232485

>>17232474
Depends where you live and how much you want to spend

In the US you get all these chunky heavy duty "heritage" boots. Whites and Viberg make good looking boots, but even then some models just look dumb. Personally I think the best looking boot Americans have ever made is the Alden Indy.
In Europe you get dressier boots and they can be very expensive. In my opinion the best looking dressy boot is the Edward Green Galway (Dark Oak + Mink Suede combo) or the Gaziano & Girling Thorpe. But these are like 1500-2000€ a pair. Enzo Bonafe is well known for using shell cordovan very well (around 1300-1500€). Then there's C&J, Carmina, TLB etc for lower budgets.

Yeah, the welt stitching is sloppy on them which is disappointing but purely an aesthetic thing that affects nothing but your eyes
The tongue is also stitched in crooked on the right boot which is annoying but again, nothing structural.
Whites is not immune to defects and they happen a lot. It's up to you to decide if the "risk" is worth it on $500+ boots

i own two pairs of MPs but I'm done with Whites as a brand. They keep raising the price over and over and over. I get it, inflation is killing people, but you are owned by a Japanese congolomerate with money to spare, you're not in danger as a company. Why the insane price raises?

truman said "we can't compete with the more established names so we're gonna go crazy with the cool leathers and MTO options and give customers boots other brands don't offer". thursday said "we are gonna be the price leader and have the cheapest """"good"""" boots on the market" so they undercut other brands with their direct-to-consumer model. Viberg said "fuck you we're Viberg, if you want the 2030 last pay up or fuck off" and people are willing to pay for the 2030 because it's so iconic.
whites is losing that edge by getting rid of so many of their custom options and letting QC slip. what set them apart was they were a really good sturdy boot for 500 bucks
now they're a really strong sturdy boot with QC issues that costs as much as Nicks and Wesco, and Viberg looks better and more iconic for just a little more. If they keep raising prices but not improving QC, people will just leave. the firefighters and loggers have other options like Franks and other workboot only brands

So I have a couple pairs of boots for cooler weather and some sneaker-type shoes (chucks, club cs) for wearing with shorts. I'm looking for something in the middle: a casual leather shoe that isn't 'dressy' like a pair of derbies but look nicer than a pair of dingy white sneakers, while also being versatile enough to wear with shorts or pants.
Last year I almost bought a pair of suede Quoddy Bluchers but the more I look at them the more I prefer the look of a camp moc. Who makes the best camp moc? I'm interested in Quoddy and Rancourt but I'm open to other suggestions.

They are absolutely beautiful in real life, my first pair of shell cordovan shoes

Last - 602M

Aimed at balance with a focus on more natural support, this last is the modified (M) version of our 602 last. The modifications include a small addition of width in the pinky toe area along with a slight addition of depth in the vamp and toebox.

When was this and I’m assuming you ordered them from The Shoe Mart? I’m not denying qc issues since petty much every manufacturer has them to some degree, due to labor issues like you stated, but from what I’ve seen they have improved and are on the same level as C&J Benchgrade (which I have had qc issues with before as well).

In my experience, shoes without a captoe end up looking really bad down the line. Especially with no captoe + unstructured toe, that's just asking for trouble.
It's even worse with shell cordovan, without a captoe piece it develops those ugly black pimples as it is stretched over the toe during lasting. I think some makers will warn you to back the fuck off if you try to order such a thing.

They are one of the few retailers that also sells Alden seconds and the majority of the qc issues I’ve heard about originated from them. I’m guessing they mix them up quite often. I would suggest if you’re not happy with them to return them and buy instead from one of the smaller distributors like Brick + Mortar, Leffot, Alden of Carmel, Ealdwine. They seem do a better job of checking qc before they ship them out.

It's exactly like that. A short boot will NEVER fit, the sole will never magically lengthen. The leather might break in a bit width wise, but if the boot is short- well bad news, it will never fit.
