I’m looking to get a pair of black derby shoes for formal occasions.
I’m looking at ones by NPS for around 200 bucks. It appears that this company and Solovair are either the same or sister companies or something and it seems like solovair gets shat on here so it NPS good to go?
These are claimed to be Goodyear welted and made in England with good leather so what really could be the issue of any?
Should I cough up an extra 100 and get meermins?

If you want something for formal occasions get a black captoe oxford and give it a good shine. But you can't really wear it anywhere else.

Derbies are casual shoes especially with chunky soles.

Solovair and NPS are made in the same factory, never seen solovair get shat on here. They're a little more bulky/chunky than the usual derby, but I work with heavy machinery in a slightly formal setting so they're just right for me. If you want some solid beaters get NPS/Solovairs, if you wanna be riced out get meermins.

The thing that’s steering me towards derby over oxfords is that I hear they are more comfortable. One thing I always hated was going to a wedding or funeral and having my feet hurt for being in cheap uncomfortable shoes for hours at a time.
I thought derbys would be plenty formal for this kind of things considering most people I see wear brown loafers and what not.

My £30 army dms/cadet boots look better made.

Derbies are more confortable because they fit the majority of foots straight away. You need to find the right last for your oxfords.

You joking? Every other boot thread I see a few posting solovair factory fuck ups. I thought the general consensus here was that they were decent but recently they quality control has been lax.

Those are not formal. Formal shoes should be oxfords without brogueing.

don't be autistic, derbies are accepted in every single event attended by normal people

and there is no brogueing in OP
