The Dreamer and Blue Jeans have arrived and from what I've smelled on my wrist, the free sample of Cool Water that was thrown in mogs them both.
The Dreamer smells like the shower gel from the dispensers at a Best Western hotel. A big "wtf" moment for me, since it was kind of a weird smell from that shower gel already.

How do you guys know so many fragrances? I just recently bought my first fragrance as a 26 year old (up until now I just wore what I was gifted) and I started lurking fragrantica and these threads. Do you just go to shops and try fragrances regularly and then make a wish list based on what you liked? So far I've tried maybe 12 fragrances and know what they smell like but that's it.

But honestly I'm hooked. I'm already planning on buying like 4 more at least. I bought Versace Pour Homme because I needed something fresh and light for everyday wear and maybe the gym, but now I'm eyeing Tom Ford Ombre Leather to wear for more formal occasions and during the fall, I also want to get YSL LNDLH Bleu Electrique as I really liked it. I also wanna get Sauvage and Montblanc Explorer just so I have those basic bitch likeable fragrances in my collection

12 hours in the world we all wished we lived in. 1 hour in the diluted reality. 30 minutes if it's L'Oreal. Doesn't matter if it's an EdT or EdP.

>>17048577
Buying samples, buying frags, testing frags at the store. Whenever you go into the city for whatever reason, stop by the smellyshop and spray some on your wrists for testing.
Also:
>maybe the gym
If one more person ruins a fragrance for me by mixing sweat and gym stank with it, I'll start wearing Sauvage Elixir to the gym every time. I hate all aquatics because my gym smells like them. Just don't wear a frag just for the gym. I will make the entire place smell like Sauvage Elixir.

I'd hold off on buying too many bottles right now, if you get more deeply into fragrance autism your tastes might change. especially too many bottles of "basic bitch likable frags" because many people get bored with them as their tastes evolve

Samples. Focus on different notes to get an idea of how they smell. So for example buy samples of 3-4 amber perfumes, then vetiver, patchouli etc. Once you have a reference point you'll have an idea of what a fragrance might smell like from note list and description, and you can identify the notes more easily when smelling. Also sample famous fragrances. Luca Turin's 4-5 star frags is a good start.
It can get a bit pricey buying niche samples, but it's cheaper than buying whole bottles and it's a fun experience.

>> No.17049355

I’m not being funny, what the hell is the point of top notes? 99% of them smell nothing like the final smell of a fragrance, the thing you’ll be smelling like for the next 5 hours. So whether you love the opening of a fragrance or not it doesn’t fucking matter because that’s not what the fragrance actually smells like. This shit makes buying frags such a pain because you have to spray it on and walk around for an hour to get a sense of what it actually smells like. And I’m one of those people that rarely likes the top notes. They tend to be strong and sweet to get your attention and I don’t like that. But again, even if I did like it it wouldn’t matter because that’s not what the fragrance will smell like.
There are a few exceptions where the opening is a nice introduction to what happens next but rarely I feel.

>> No.17049358

>>17049282
I've recently bid on used frags on eBay, auctions expire in a few days. Some are just backup bottles of stuff I like and which hasn't been on sale for a while now, some are new to me. Will see what comes from it.

>>17049324
Probably not. Just L'Oreal fuckery with raw material prices. When they get their stuff for the price they want to secure the margins they want, they will produce more.
Ever since L'Oreal cheaped down the bottle design (click cap instead of magnetic, matte-white painted letters instead of silver relief letters, etc.) they also diluted the stuff, anyway. Nothing but complaints since then. This is peak modern perfumery. Create popularity, create scarcity, inflate prices, increase margins.

I'd mostly agree with you. On some fragrances, the top notes are only used to hide the smell of the alcohol evaporating. On other fragrances, top notes are part of the whole fragrance, which is complex enough to change multiple times. More of an experience and an art compared to other frags, sometimes very enjoyable.
Then again many fragrances are just using the top notes to create an unrealistic image of the fragrance in order to sell quickly at a store. This is why I can also like a good and strong linear fragrance. No false advertising.

My favorite developing scent is still New York Intense, which is like 3-4 fragrances in one.
My favorite linear fragrance is Le Male Le Parfum (or something from Profumum Roma, probably Patchouly). Straight up no change whatsoever, strong and linear as fuck.

a time of big changes in male perfumery, which I think is why 90s fragrances seem much more "modern" to most people than 80s ones, we're still continuing the 90s aquatic and gourmand trends in some ways

My initial results on some oakmoss extract mixtures (entire Encre Noire line and Cool Water) are very promising. They all got noticeably more intense from the first spray, and even now more than an hour later, they are still as present as they were within the first 5 minutes of spraying. I can see why oakmoss was so important as a fixative.

I can't say EN and ENAL have changed their scent profile much, but their foresty DNA is just intensified, and as they are drying down that seems to be getting more noticeable too.

ENS gets a lovely green colour with the added oakmoss, but it's still not really noticeably foresty at all to my nose. Maybe I will up the oakmoss amount on this. However, I also added a drop of lavender oil, and that surprisingly did exactly what I hoped it would: add back to the heart of the frag what reformulations took away, which is a lovely accord of the aquatic with the lavender, very smooth and pleasantly fresh. The lavender definitely drowns out the citrus though, especially in the opening, which is otherwise much more present in the reformulation. So I don't think I'll add lavender to my entire bottle. Then again, as the mixture macerates into my decant, perhaps the lavender will get more subtle, allowing the citrus to shine through more again.

Cool Water is noticeably more aromatic with the added oakmoss, it has a musky roughness to it in the opening that it did not have beforehand. And yeah, it also performs much better now.

I think pretty much any frag can benefit from added oakmoss. If you don't add a lot of it, it doesn't change the scent profile a lot, it intensifies that profile and adds some edges to it, particularly in the drydown, and it significantly improves the performance. Keep in mind that not all oakmosses are equal though, there's different qualities, origins and concentrations. I used a rather cheap extract, which I wouldn't say is very pungent, but there's much more expensive ones that I suspect are better.

Another two hours and they are still just as present. This is fucking amazing. Is there a cheaper material with fixative qualities comparable to oakmoss? I want this for all my fragrances now.

Cool Water is starting to fade a bit though. Needs More Oakmoss.

I also decanted more ENS to tone down the lavender, and added more oakmoss to compensate, and damn, this stuff is special. Compared to my sample of the original ENS, which is soft, almost detergent-like, this has a harsh freshness from the citrus and intense natural lavender, and the aquatic drydown while pleasant is still also striking. I feel like the lavender evaporates relatively fast though, with an a bit disproportionally subtle drydown, maybe I need some other lavender material rather than this essential oil. But for now this is good enough.

I can't really tell for myself since i literally have nothing to compare it to. But my friends say that:

Might be because the reviews are right, or might be because i spray too little (one spray) and my skin is naturally extremely dry.

In the summer if you really sweat and stuff, even the reformulated lighter Cool Water gets more aromatic, especially in the air. The right people will love it, has distinctly more character than just a nice laundry scent.

That said, the accords of neroli, jasmine and amber really create this laundry detergent feel, I get the same in the drydown of other frags that feature them together (such as neroli intense).

I had this girl over in the summer a couple of years ago and she wore a pair of tight shorts of mine while we were being sporty outside, and before washing that pair of shorts, I kept sniffing it. So for me, this fresh laundry + aromatic muskiness thing of Cool Water is exhilarating, reminding me of that. :^)

If you want to enhance and enrich its character and can't get your hands on a vintage version, add oakmoss to it. Look at that thick juice.

>>17050845
I can attest that the new Encre Noire batches are not great performers. A couple of things though:

You need more sprays. Try 4-6, ask your friends again, increase from there.

Spray your clothes. Ideally you drench a spot on a sweater containing natural fibres, by getting the atomizer within a centimer or two of the spot and spraying a good 4-6 times, soaking it. Watch out for stains on light clothing though.

Maceration seems to be a thing with these. I have noticed with mine that as the weeks pass, they get more intense and long-lasting.

It's possible to go noseblind, primarily due to the large amount of Iso E in them, as >>17050880 mentioned. Spray further away from your face, maybe even hold your breath/pinch your nose while spraying, let the frag dry down and smell it from some distance rather than pressing your nose against it.

You can consider using oakmoss to spice it up. Works amazingly well.

And again, they most likely wouldn't be around anymore if they were outright selling fake shit.

I'm not gonna unconditionally vouch for them, it's not impossible they dilute stuff (although that seems like it would be more work and effort itself than they make up for), but it's mostly what the other anon said, the perfume houses themselves reformulate and dilute their stuff over the years.

The latter more so than the former, but neither will really add much at all to your scent bubble. I also have an Old Spice deo spray, it has stronger projection but doesn't last all that long.

They are not worth the increased price at all I think, just get odorless quality stuff. Or even generic deo, as its scent will disappear anyway.

That said, sometimes there are offers that bundle deo, shower gel and perfume, and if they aren't that much more expensive than the frag itself you may as well go for it. Having nice scent-sations in the shower is worth it if nothing else.

Pretty cool. Give it some smoky, petroly and flinty notes too. Maybe something metallic.

I think something you touch on with that is that the perfume world has never really embraced the idea of reapplying. People have their shit at home, but we are in the age of dilution, reapplying every 2-3 hours while you're out and about should be more common practice now. Travel bottles exist, but they're not mainstream products, houses don't even have travel-sized offerings of all their frags either, and without a purse to throw them in they regularly aren't even that effortless a carry.

So packaging frags such that they can be carried around and fit into casual use stylistically as well seems worthwhile. Zippo lighter, lipstick, flask, maybe even vials that can be incorporated into jewelry or some shit.

The "ideal temp" is obviously the temp right above the point where they would either freeze or separate. The colder, the better. If they can be frozen without separation, that would be the best temperature, obviously. -273.15 K.
This is purely hypothetical since the coldest I've ever seen anyone cooling their frags was by using the fridge.

My freezer is filled with food as my physique mogs the Le Male bottle and needs to be maintained. I keep them in the basement, that must be enough.
It's just a bottle of Neroli Intense and Le 3e Homme de Caron, anyway.

Personally, I doubt it. My fridge doesn't really smell of anything, though, since it's nice and clean. My knowledge is limited to chemistry and I have never stored my frags in the fridge, so I can't give you an answer based on empirical evidence or theoretical knowledge.

I guess it wouldn't do anything unless you consistently stored extremely smelly foods like aged cheeses and whatnot, but I don't know.

If you left a frsg in a smelley fridge for a long time the first spray woulf probably be a bit off but i don't think the smell would work it's way into the bottle

I took out my bottle of ultime just now and shook my head in disappointment again. I spent 90 bucks for 100ml and it's barely used. Should I dump it and buy something else or just use it until it runs out? I hate wasting money. Bought it years ago. It fucking SUCKS.

I got a kouros body gel with my bottle. Decided to use it one day and I stunk (in a good way)
Had to grab another shower later on as I was seeing a prostitute that night and didn't want to offend her.
Personally I wouldn't bother buying one unless you were gonna use it when to bed.
if you wanted to smell like the frag during the day, you could just use the frag, no?

found this absolutely laughable and unwearable at first, but in love with it now
there's something grandmaish about it that's very comforting and whitepilling
however i feel like this is a hard mismatch for me as a 6'1 straight young dude, it's very grandma-ish and pink-dyed hair petite girl-ish

not gonna buy a full bottle, but i'll miss this sample when i run out

The kerosene smell died down to raspbery and leather later on but the kerosene smell linger for an hour or so.
As someone who used to use kerosene for cooking and sometimes kerosene lamp (older millenial here) I'm not really fond of kerosene.
For most westerners they probably use gas stove since the 80s so they never have to handle stuff that use kerosene as fuel. So they will find this frag smells nice.
But me, I rather use LY Tobacco Blaze
