Congrats. I envy you. Cornell were some of my greatest years. Hope they will be for you too. Two pieces of advice:
>don't be a geek but also make sure you always have one or two things you're doing that are intellectually stimulating, whether it's a political club, academic journal, research assistant, etc. you don't need to make your life about school but you are there for the people more than anything, learn from them
>see as much of the place as you possibly can. try to take every invite you can, especially if it's something you wouldn't normally go to, like a gala or a famous speaker or a weirdo art students' party full of people you've never met. this seems like boomer advice but I'm serious

anon who bought a couple tweed jackets on ebay the other day here. ive got the other two returned, but i made the mistake of buying another from the guy in a size down hoping it would fit. unfortunately not only was it true to size at a 16" shoulder to shoulder seam, but for some unknown fucking reason the shoulders extended past the shoulder seam in the most awkward way. the chest was too tight, as was the waist, and i have a pretty narrow waist for a guy and not much chest development. is this a problem with where im looking for things, or a problem with what im looking for? im not sure if my build simply isnt catered to in sports jackets, or if i am just having shit luck picking sports jackets.

>> No.15882452

>>15882426
Buying online is always a gamble, ebay sellers are retarded. Don't give up based on ebay purchases. If I remember correctly he fucked up the sizing on the first two jackets, what makes you think he didn't fuck this one up too
To find out what you need go to several different department stores and try on a ton of jackets in different cuts, different brands, and different fabrics. Tell the salesmen you are looking to purchase a few sports coats soon and are interested in their offerings. They will work with you and give you good feedback.
It sounds like this one was just too small everywhere. The other pics you posted as well as this one do seem to have quite a bit of waist suppression and flaring. The guy you have been dealing with clearly is neither reliable nor a good source for you.
All sorts of builds are catered to. Being slight of frame is not as much of a problem as being a fatass. Just try several types and cuts out. it will take some time but eventually you'll get an idea of what you like and what works for your body type.

i wont lie im carrying a bit extra but its nowhere that would significantly affect a jackets fit right now. all my weight seems to go to my ass and thighs.

right now visiting shops is off the table, restrictions are both draconian and retarded so im going nowhere unless i plan on paying a fine to look at closed shops. theres also not many places i can go to get my measurements for a jacket beyond dedicated menswear stores which stock mostly suits and a small amount of clothes to cater to gen-x people who want to wear jeans and a quarter zip with their suit jacket.

doesnt help im a thriftfag either

Overcoats can be found online, as I said they are more forgiving with sizing. It being winter you'll probably have relatively slim pickings.
Considering the trouble you've had finding a sports coat so far I would wait until I could physically try things on. IRL experience will help you to make online purchases later. Those dedicated menswear stores are exactly the kind of places you should drop into and get measured and try on whatever they have. Tell them you are going to buy coats soon and are shopping around. Don't give hard dates or a budget. Seem interested in purchasing even if the price is way out of your league. Trying on and wearing really nice things gives you an appreciation for good quality clothes and will help you to know what to look for.
Again you need to try as many cuts as possible to find what works for you. Don't stress about it too much right now. Since you're locked down do lots of reading and viewing online to understand the basics of clothing, fit, style etc.

I don't have much experience with a lot of brands but Uniqlo are probably best out of fast fashion.
Mercer & Sons are excellent but come with a hefty price tag. Their website comes straight from the Geocities era.
Vintage Brooks are great, newer ones pretty good but pricey for what you get. Not as thick as they used to be.
Maker's Kamakura hits the sweet spot for me. Good price and great quality. They offer interlined in regular button downs and non-interlined in the Sport version. Not top tier but just right for what you pay. Downside is that buttons are sewn on fairly poorly. Haven't had one pop off but they tend to get very loose, especially on the cuffs, so I resew them.

I bought khakis recently that eat a third of that budget. What I did was buy the basics from Uniqlo because I needed something cheap and appropriate for work. Then I gradually replaced them with better stuff as my budget grew. It's not glorious but it works. If you put together $1k for clothes you can get yourself a few good shirts, a couple pants, and a nice sweater and probably have some left over.

Okay, just to make sure I wasn't fucking up anyone and their potential purchases, I went to my closet and looked.
In the NY slim I have a 15.5/35.5 neck which I find unwearable. The armholes are uncomfortably high and tight.
In the Tokyo slim I have a 16/15, this is because their sizes do not match up between lines and that was the closest to my correct neck and sleeve length. I took the sides in on my Tokyo just a hair as a result of it being slightly wider as it's a 16. This was more personal preference.
The point it, the Tokyos have comfortable armholes, do not dig in and aren't too tight. The NYs, for me personally, do have that issue.

Here's my progress since March last year.

A pair of brown derbies and oxfords from an big AE sales for around 250. Buy shoe trees and a good leather conditioner and cream polish and use after 10 - 20 wears, this does more for your outfit than you think and most men don't do it.

Light tan, copper, and navy chinos from Luxire for around 300. MTM, 100% cotton, far better deal than other chinos at a similar price point.

3 barely used gitman ocbds, bunch of shirts, a pair of grey trousers, 3 polos from spier and mackay on sale, white ocbd from kamakura final sale. about 400

Maybe start with one pair of chinos, a light blue ocbd, and brown Derbies.

thrift a bunch of ralph lauren chinos or equivalent, theyre good enough staple trousers and free up more cash for other things. thrift some loake or equivelent shoes. one black leather semi-casual pair, one brown suede pair, and some loafers. thrift one decent overcoat, minimum 80% new wool. thrift some decent looking sweaters, cotton will work if its cheap and looks the part. you will want one crew neck cable knit or aran sweater at minimum because they are versatile and available, and you will want one in navy and one in beige or brown. buy some cheap shirts with whats left over to go under them, and just wear a tshirt with your chinos in summer because you will still look a fuck load better than most people.
