Well one thing is that we live in democracies now. War is a whole lot less desirable as a leader when you have to tell people who you want to vote for you that their kid is coming back home dead cuz greater good. Kings had more incentive to do this.
War is also now a profession and not a lifestyle, because we no longer have an aristocratic class that derives from the retinues of kings and lords that were granted land and men in exchange for their military service. Instead we just have people who are professional military, and we like them to look like people who render services efficiently vs to look cool. You would probably not want your plumber to come dressed like he's a Balmain model.

For one, that's an idealized drawing. Almost no one actually looked quite that good. It would be like putting the photo of Pat Tillman in his tan beret as the example of the modern soldier. With a logistics network based on requests handwritten by candlelight, carried on horseback, and fulfilled by horse-drawn wooden carts on dirt roads, there would be no replacing equipment or uniforms in the field. It was still a serious undertaking to take a picture though, and people being photographed would try to look their best. Pictured are French soldiers from 1870 looking their best. Still stylish, yes, but not exactly the ideal depicted in the drawing.

Two big changes to warfare since 1800 are the massively increased deadliness of weaponry and the even greater leap forward in command and control ability. The advent of the radio means instant communication can be sent from headquarters to a unit in combat, allowing instantaneous flexibility in tactics. Before the telegraph, orders had to be manually relayed, and the only way to get immediate information about a unit was for a commander to look at that unit through a spyglass from atop a hill. Bright, distinct uniforms, contrasting both against the enemy army and against other units were an advantage because they allowed commanders to send out orders without waiting for reports from sub-commanders.

The increased lethality of weapons means there is a greater advantage to being difficult to spot. Hence the less beautiful but more tactically effective camouflage, the big dorky but casualty preventing helmet, and the goofy NVG that allows the soldier to operate at night against enemies blind in the dark.

They're not really that useful.Virtually all vests are incapable of stopping more than low power pistol rounds and shrapnel. Plates give some amount of chance to mitigate rifle rounds depending on a lot of different factors.

With that in mind, the vast majority of battle causalities aren't firearm related. So, if your dumb ass is in a room with a grenade, the vest won't likely save your life. If you're involved with an IED, likely same. Artillery? Air? Not even close. It's why helmets are almost always used (cheap, effective against shrapnel, can also be used as an emergency shield against grenades by laying prone facing), and vests are a sign of an army that can't absorb causalities or intends to occupy.

3: i never said they were completely protected due to having armor plates in their vests. i said that vital areas were prioritized as if a soldier is hit in those areas, they will die quickly. a soldier won't die instantly if they are shot in their gut or in the leg and those areas can be treated and stablilized with said ifak or by a combat medic.
4: there is still a lot of conventional small arms fighting as most conflicts these days are usually fought between a bigger well funded army and smaller insurgent groups using guerilla tactics. you cannot just bomb an insurgent group into submission.
5: there are fewer coalition combat deaths due to advances in medicine, a de-escalation of the amount of troops in current conflicts, and that contractor deaths do not count towards the coalition death count.

He was supposed to have an interview with Noam Chomsky before he was killed, supposedly it was going to be anti-war and this would have done huge damage to the Bush administration and the military industrial complex in general. You should stop running your mouth when you clearly don’t know anything.

I think 9/11 was an inside job, but I don’t fault Tillmans motivation for joining the military. He was sincere. Leaving a multimillion dollar football contractor to join the military proves he placed the countries interests above his own.
