I’d take a watch that can call people, count steps, change songs, read text messages, heartbeat etc over a Patex or a Rolex any day

Mechanical watches have been obsolete since the quartz revolution in the 70s. Wristwatches have been obsolete since the first smartphone. The sole function of wristwatches today is 1) jewelry, 2) art, and 3) wealth signaling.

>>15864826
Right now the market is heavily saturated with people trying to sell due to the economic downturn from Covid lockdowns. If you are a brick and mortar selling a watch with full box and papers, you can probably go for the average or a little higher than what you see on Chrono24, but if you're an individual selling privately, you have to downgrade your price around 15% or so. If you try to keep it high, no one will buy. Trading in is even worse, because the place you are trading in to has to make a profit both ways: they have to be assured they can sell the watch for a profit and they have to make a profit on the watch they're selling you. If you want to sell your watch, depending on what it is and what condition, Chrono24 would be better in this climate...just don't expect to get the median return.

>>15864828
Agreed, but remember that you're wearing the watch for you, not for others. Just wear what you love, and if you need to save up for it, then do so. There's lots of time.

>>15864847
None; I've been thinking of a Rolex Cellini Prince for a while, but then I found a Patek rectangular from the 1920s which is nicer....still haven't pulled the trigger though because the Roger Dubuis Much More is an excellent modern contender. Rolex can gain if you 1) buy a stainless steel sports model and 2) put it in a safe for 20 years.

>>15864879
No; condensation inside the watch indicates moisture, which usually means that you may have bigger problems than just the cold. Normally with modern watches you won't get condensation at all; if you do it's usually a sign of water ingress and the need to have it serviced ASAP.

I think it gains around 5 seconds a day. Pretty good for a 25k vph (or something like that) watch that i wind once every 3 days.

And condensation can build up inside a sealed watched. There's moisture in the air inside the case. Its acceptable as long as it goes away quickly. If it lingers, it indicates a leakage.

I always heard the doorknob thing, and In my 30 years of wearing watches I think I never hit a doorknob with my watch, scratches against a wall, yes, maybe three or four, but never doorknobs or even hitting a table, just the average scratch from friction or when leaving it at some place.

For Omega, Panerai, and Roger Dubuis, I'm definitely right. I've been following their prices on the secondary market for the past 2 years, and since last July watches have been dumping onto the market in numbers far larger than before (with fewer buying them, hence the deflation in prices as well as the excess numbers).

Rolex is the only, and I mean ONLY manufacturer that is seen as an 'investment'. Finally, remember that the increase we're seeing is not only individuals selling but also brick and mortars who have been directly affected by the Covid shutdowns and can't do business.

The only way to sell a watch that isn't a Rolex is to either do so at a significant drop to a brick and mortar (if they deem it something they can resell) or doing so at a significant drop on Chrono24 and eBay. If the seller needs cash sooner, then the price drops further.

If you add in the issue of collectors retiring and getting old, you have something of a perfect storm. Older collectors are selling off their pieces one by one, not necessarily due to economic concerns but just because they're getting old and don't want to have all the money tied up. The problem is that normally the buyers would be 'informed collectors', but the majority of informed collectors are the same age and also trying to offload their watches. If the new collectors had the capital and the interest, things would be fine, but the interest in mechanical watches isn't going down by 2 generations, nor does the population 2 generations down have enough capital to buy.

It's a fucking great time to buy watches if you still have a job, and it's difficult to sell a watch if you need the money because you've been laid off or money is tight.

>tl;dr Old collectors offload their watches, but younger buyers aren't interested or have capital. Covid destroys brick-and-mortars, so everyone is selling before bankruptcy. Only way to sell a watch is at deep discount, so now's the time to buy.

You do realize that the Speedy is the best selling and most popular watch that Omega makes, right? You also are aware that they've been slowly increasing the MSRP of the Speedmaster for the past decade, justifying the extra cost (while keeping the watch the same) by adding a huge box, loupe, extra straps, etc.?

Have you been charting the Japanese dropping Moonwatches like hotcakes since last December on both eBay and Chrono24? Have you seen the recent uptick in prices ever since Omega declared that they're discontinuing the 1861 with the replacement 3861? You're not thinking, and I'm beginning to think you don't /fa/.

Try this, sweaty.

Do a search for two-tone Rolex Datejusts. Look at the pricing possibilities compared with condition, box and papers (or lack thereof), year, etc. You know what you'll find? A shittonne, far more than could ever be sold to an adoring public. You know why? Because they're undesirable. They don't increase in value after they're sold. You compare that with ANY steel sports watch from Rolex and it's entirely different. Daytonas, Deepseas, etc, all increase in value the moment they leave the boutique. They're desirable in an artificially induced market...gotta go...

Sorry, the Tuttonero is running fast for some odd reason.

What I was going to say was that there are specific models that are undesirable and thus flood the market; the two-tone DateJust being one of the 'entry-level' models that Rolex ADs encourage new customers to buy so they can get on the wait lists to be 'preferred customers'. Now, what happens to these undesirable watches bought in order to get better ones? The owners try to sell them as soon as possible, hence the flood. That's why there are so many that could never be absorbed by the market. You see the same with Cellinis, incidentally.

With Omega, you'll find Moonwatch Speedies were going lowest for around 4.5K C$ until last January, when things started to get strange due to Covid. Omega increased the retail price from 7000 plus tax to around 7700, or a little higher depending on the dealer and the AD. At the same time, Japan started dumping Speedies in the 4K range, well below what used to be the used market low bar.

Speedies are notorious on second hand markets due to two factors: there are no fakes that are even close to being genuine (thus increased confidence in buyers), but they are also the No. 1 watch suggested by 'enthusiasts' in the watch collecting stratus to be bought by new entrants ('everyone needs a Speedy in their collection'). So, people buy the watch, and then they realize that they might not like it...so they try flipping it. But the market supports this because there's enough love for the product.

Deville Hour Visions, 8500 Cal. Omegas, and others from the 2005-2012 era depreciate as expected (10-15% after the 10-15% under retail after purchase), but the early 2500 Cal go down significantly due to the shit movement. From the 90's, only the 2531.80 Bond Seamasters hold value; the Mark 40 that I have plummeted to around 2K starting, which is wonderful for a triple date Valjoux 7751.

The lowest price right now is around 4200 Canadian. About half retail price, but usually for no-box or papers. The Speedy reduced will be below 2000 Canadian, and the Mark 40 variants start around 2200. Are you interested in a Moonwatch in particular? Also, bear in mind that Sapphire will be more expensive than Hesalite, and the condition of the watch affects the price directly. If you want a Cal. 321, the starting price for a vintage is around 10,000 Canadian.

Beautiful, though I disagree that it needs to be killed with fire.

As a last thought about the market. If you know your watches, know your prices, or have been following a particular model and brand for the past 2 years, you'll have seen evidence that all points to a real perfect storm of events.

Collectors normally only sell and trade with other collectors, but now they're all getting old and dying off. The young people who 'should' be replacing the stock aren't there because they have no interest and would rather spend money on computer-related technology. The middle generations who appreciate 'haute horology' don't have the capital to collect, and the numbers of people in this generation who might have the capital but not the knowledge required to understand why a lollypop Speedy should be worth 10k more than one from 1968 are dwindling fast. There's even a serious discussion now surrounding whether or not 'patina' should create the premium it does, even though serious watchmakers will attest to it simply being damage. What happens when a new generation of collectors doesn't 'value' patina as the old collectors did? The prices will have to drop if the watches are going to change hands.

Something is happening, and the watch Youtubers (who are mostly representatives for Watch Shops) will not discuss this for fear of hurting their own business. They WANT there to be enthusiasm and interest in the wares they are selling, but if you watch some of the new reviews of the Speedy 3861 just released on Tuesday, you'll notice that quite a number of them sound like they're talking about the minute differences between a Chanel Handbag from 2009 vs. one from 2010. It's actually quite appalling.

What do you think?

It's going to be strange, that's for sure. Patek, VC, and AP will never lower their prices, but their production numbers are still relatively low. Same with ALS. Within that category you have outliers like Richard Mille (with lots of watches available but all at prices no one would bother paying for for a used watch) and Roger Dubuis (which heavily devalues if it's not from the time when he was head of the company in the 90s to early 2000s).

Under this you have Rolex (stainless steel is the only holder of value, everything else devalues), Omega (Speedy only, everything else devalues), and the rest (which all devalue regardless). Under that you have Oris, Longines, and the rest which guarantee to devalue.

There are strange ones in the middle like Tudor, which have managed to find a way to be attractive to the up-and-coming wealthy, but the designs are of-the-moment and will age obviously (but not necessarily badly). Some Tudors hold, but most devalue since it's still a poor-man's Rolex.

Grand Seiko doesn't seem to care, nor does the market. They don't devalue that heavily, but they don't increase either.

It's the really in-depth collecting parameters that are in danger here. A correct dot-over-90 bezel used to be able to increase the price of a Speedy by 5-10K if the condition was good...but if no one cares (or if someone simply takes it into Omega servicing knowing that everything damaged will be replaced), then that value won't work on the open market.

Actually, I don't know why more people don't do this: buy the lowest price you can afford, take it into servicing, and still have a brand new watch for a fraction of what a brand-new watch would cost.

The issue is that it's a mechanical movement with nearly 50 year old lubrication inside. That's not ideal if you're going to be running the movement.

Servicing costs depend on who does it. A trusted watchmaker could do it for around 250$ or so, assuming he doesn't have to replace any parts (which might be tough to find). Sending it directly to Breitling would be more expensive (you'd have to check...I've never owned a Breitling nor had one serviced by them); for a mechanical chronograph, maybe 900$? But since it's vintage, it might be more.

If it were me, I'd take it to my watch guy because I wouldn't want anyone to fuck with the original condition of it. Yours is essentially 'mint' condition, so the issue here is that you want the movement to be cleaned and lubricated so you can wear it; you don't want the dial or hands fucked with in any way, or the old lume replaced with new.

That's what I'd do anyway.

Disagree about the younger generation. Lots of young people like watches, they just care mostly about brand name and want "rollies" or "pahtecks" and don't care much for actual horology.

I agree about the point regarding patina tho, and I have many times enjoyed receiving a watch that was restored and now "collectors" don't want it, so I pick it up for cheap and it looks great.

Patina only looks good in certain situations. Slightly yellowed indices I can appreciate. I can't understand people trying to sell a corroded, rusted up datejust for what a new one costs at retail and trying to justify it as patina.

Will be used during my job in food service and soon will transition to my job in a hospital setting.
Would not need to be dressy at all, but I don't want a really tacky looking plastic thing, I really just don't care for the Casio look.

I'd be getting a nicer watch later down the line, but for now I'd want something for every day and wouldn't mind if it got scuffed a bit.

Okay, if you want a reliable movement, I'd say quartz is the way to go.
Casio actually makes some cheap decent analog watches (look at the MTP series), but you can also look at Citizen models.
Most of them are oversized IMO, but their eco-drive movements are maintenance-free for about two decades and the bracelets are as comfy as it gets at this price point.

The basic Patrimony models are like a Calatrava with a less striking hand set.
Its design is quintessential, but that's also why I can see the link between it and Aliexpress shitters from afar.

The Overseas doesn't have a textured dial, which could feel lazy compared to the other simiar watches on the market. (I think the bezel is already busy enough, but hey.)
And it looks like many elements are superimposed over other elements, unlike the Nautilus or the APRO.

Meihualu was the main brand of the now defunct Jilin Watch Factory, one of the "Original 8" watch factories set up in 1958 communist china (the other factories include Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin--aka Seagull)

this particular Meihualu is a play on words. Meihualu translated word for word is "plum blossom deer" (Sika Deer, a deer species in eastern asia), hence the subtle plum blossom texture embossing on the dial.
It is also one of the few pictorial textured dial for VCMs, usually these old chinese watches are quite plain.

movement inside is (likely-ive not opened it yet) the ubiquitous Tongji (unified) movement, a consolidated, simple 17-jewel standardised movement out of all the early chinese movements

>how much it set you back
the seller wanted 1600RMB/$250 for it, which is many times higher than what VCMs normally go for. Normal ones sold domestically on chinese apps only cost $10-$50
I also had to pay a taobao agent as he did not want to ship out of the country.
Would likely need a service/clean/lube also.

its not that much money, but the process of actually finding it and communication was extremely demanding. This was the only example I found. There is another anon who also has one here.
From what Ive read on WUS, the golden age of collecting VCMs is over, most have long been snapped up by western collectors years ago due to the low pricing.

>A BMW Z4 was used as the base of the ultra-premium dragon car before it was merchandised with the carved yak bones and gold sheeting.
>In total, 30,000 yak leg bones were used. They were individually carved and polished before being assembled together to form the shape of a dragon.
>Given the shape of the car's body and final contour, highly technical carving techniques had to be used.
>Several thousand scales mounted onto the 'dragon' were carved with Diamond Sutra, one of the earliest known Buddhist scriptures.
>There were also 999 small dragon patterns etched onto various parts of the car, including on its bonnet, wing mirrors and even the exhaust pipe.
>Additional decoration was created with 1,999 pieces of solid gold sheeting - even the wheels are made from gold.
