>> No.15864234

Got my samples. Used Perris Monte Carlo Cacao Aztèque first. Expected a big cocoa bomb but there's barely any here to my nose. Some people say that's how actual cocoa drink in South America smells like. That's why it is unfamiliar to people used to western notion of heavily processed cocoa. What I get is cardamom opening morphing to a tuberose scent. Very snice but poor performance. I also got a sample of the new Nasomatto Fantomas for free with my order (together with Xerjoff Apollonia). It smells absolutely wonderfully on my gf.

Testing Parfums d'Empire Acqua di Scandola. It's a 80-s citric freshie reimagined. Just like if Eau de Rochas and Dior Eau Sauvage had a child conceived at a sea-side villa with a big garden blooming with flowers over summer. That's not an aquatic scent. The opening is citric, aromatic and green with floral undertones that get more prominent on the way to the mid and base. The entire vibe is aquatic the way Frederic Malle En Passant smells 'watery' but it's definitely not aquatic-forward so if you expect something like Acqua di Sale like I did you might be in for a disappointment. More of an aquatic impression after it rained on a sunny day, temperature dropped cooled down by a few degrees and leaves are still covered in raindrops. I like it over all. A bit feminine leaning.

>> No.15865012

>>15864716
I got a 100ml bottle on ebay that had been spritzed like once for £40 and its lasted me a long time. Not sure where you might find it these days though.

>>15864752
apparently Etienne de Swardt is always shying away from labdanum in perfumes, so for ELDO to make a single note labdanum fragrance is for him "taboo" and I guess that's where de Sade comes in. Also it smells very austere and churchy which is unexpected for a perfume dedicated to a sado-masochist, but I suppose there is something erotic about worship and submission (to God)...

>>15864767
1740 is probably a better representation of the marquis as it has that skanky animalic leather touch that makes you think of whips or bondage, but I prefer ELDO's version purely because of how multi-faceted that single labdanum note really is, and it layers so well with a lot of my other winter fragrances.

They clearly have done the collabo with Sarah McCartney just for a sake of seeing what's the process of creating a fragrance like because they're genuinely passionate about this stuff. make sure you dedicate separate time for dior sauvage, it will probably blind your nose and you won't pickup other smells well. same for dylan blue. try to smell adg profumo, the one, light blue first . try spray on paper, them wear one on each arm and decide. you can spray another one on top of la nuit and the one, they last about 6 hours. beware, sauvage lasts over 9 hours.

conclusion, make sure to not write off any of them before spraying on skin and give them a few wears

personally i only started 2 years ago but from that list I would probably go for

AdG profumo
d&g the one

and maybe something like hermes but if you're completely new to the game it might be worth you getting to grips with the aventus meme and just buy CdN intense man. it's quite nasty in the opening but give it 15 minutes and you've got an aventus scent trail coming off you. guaranteed compliments. people will be asking you what you're wearing and where to buy etc. just tell them aventus then let them see the price for themselves. the average normie hasn't heard of aventus no matter what fags in this thread say.

profumo is a fucking champion and the sample may not do it justice. any occasion any time any temperature it'll perform

Testing my sample of pic related. It's somewhere between Penhaligon's Sartorial and MDCI Invasion Barbare. It draws handfuls from the aromatic metallic fougere structure of the former but implements it in a less complex way than Duchaufour did with Sartorial and adds an oriental, gourmandy-spicy touch of the latter but in more dull, 'aftershavey' way. All of that for a price comparable to MDCI IB. I'd just get 3 bottles of Sartorial for the price.

Try wearing at least two at once (one on each wrist) and sniff them throughout the day. I'll sometimes do four at once on different parts of my body if I have a lot of samples I want to burn through. You'll just get nauseous and go noseblind if you wear too much different shit at once though, so don't overdo it. It might sound autistic but I recommend taking notes so you don't forget your thoughts on them all, it'll be easier to go back and compare them all this way.

I hated Green Irish Tweed, thought it smelled like I shoved my face in grass. I love EN to death though. It's got a pine note, but the smoke and musk balance it beautifully.
A L'Extreme is also an excellent flanker if you want a fuller, warmer version of EN. Pine vibe is replaced by resin and a surprisingly inoffensive, unconventional incense which supports but never competes for attention. Some sweetness on the drydown too.
tldr: EN is a small church in the woods. EN A L'Extreme is a monastery in the mountains. Both scents are kino.

I've only been doing DIY for 4 months now, and am close to finally finishing my first frag I'll be happy with (I've made 50+ frags I wasn't happy with) So I don't have a ton of experience, but maybe you'll find my advice useful:
1. Idk what kind of fragrance you want to make, so I say get the essentials: linalyl acetate, hedione, iso e super, benzyl acetate, vetiveryl acetate, geraniol, linalool, musks like ambrettolide, velvione and galaxolide.
Buy any naturals you want, but don't forget bergamot! Also imho one thing you shouldn't skimp on are florals. They are ridiculously expensive, but buying naturals is worth it and you will smell the difference.
2. buy a ton of bottles (preferably amber ones), pipettes, some measuring tools, and a decent scale (needs to be 0.01g accurate, don't buy jewelry scales, they're garbage)
3. Additional things: most people don't seem to have this problem, but I would discourage you from using bottles with screw top glass pipettes. The rubber in some of the ones I bought goes into some weird chemical reaction and peels off, resulting in the ingredients evaporating. Use basenotes diy forum, some formulas are posted there, might be useful. Another place with formulas is thegoodscentscompany

It's going to be my interpretation of russian leather. I love classic/vintage fragrances so most of the ones I''ll make will probably feel oldish.
The final version is not ready yet, I have the formula ready, just waiting to get naturals to replace some of my synthetics in the formula ( vanilla tincture instead of vanillin, real mysore sandalwood instead of a sandalwood accord I made, real ambrette absolute)
The note breakdown will be this:
Top: Geranium, cumin, bergamot, galbanum, lemon
Heart: birch tar, jasmine, persian rose otto, ylang ylang, pink lotus, tobacco
Base: Castoreum, myrrh, vetiver, mysore sandalwood, ambrette, oakmoss, vanilla, civet

I haven't counted this yet, but it's probably going to be around 70% natural. I also use natural castoreum and civet, and the fragrance is definitely not ifra compliant.
My next project is to create a very earthy animalic chypre, been working on a mitsouko-like chypre for over 2 months now but it's not working out, so I decided to give up on that for now

I’m no expert on Guerlain but my interpretation of their comments isn’t that they haven’t made a good one, but that for arguably the most important house in the history of modern perfumery they are becoming completely irrelevant in the modern day with generic and uninteresting fragrances. There’s not much wrong with their post-2000 fragrances, but there’s nothing great about it either.

They have chosen their fate themselves when Guerlains decided to give their almost 200 years old heritage company in hands of a foreign body - Thierry Wasser - instead of the talented perfumer Patricia de Nicolai, a grand-daughter of the house’s founder, Pierre Guerlain, a niece of Jean-Jacques Guerlain, and a niece or cousin to the famed nose, Jean-Paul Guerlain. They prevented her selection for position since: "The family who worked in the brand was only men, no women". I don't want to start a /pol/-esque argument now but this is a retarded move from any angle. It is ridiculous that you can smell Guerlinade in some of Nicolai's fragrances more than in new Wasser's releases under the house name. Imagine having Nicolai's New York Intense available around the globe as a Guerlain fragrance: wherever there's a Guerlain's booth. This would be a release on par of the old Guerlain stuff and maybe would shape the market in different direction than the prevalent, dull blue shower-gel scents, I hope they'll come to their senses at some point.

Let me chime in $0.02 from Turin again.
>If Guerlain had any sense they would buy Parfums de Nicolaï, add her range to theirs, trash fifteen or so of their own laggard fragrances, a couple of de Nicolaï’s, and install owner-creator Patricia in Orphin as in-house perfumer. She is, after all, a granddaughter of Pierre Guerlain and genetic analysis might usefully reveal the genes associated with her perfumery talent. As a control where the genes are known to be absent, use the DNA of whoever did Creed’s Love in White. Smelling New York as I write this, eighteen years after its release, is like meeting an old high-school teacher that had a decisive influence on my life: I may have moved on, but everything it taught me is still there, still precious, and wonderful to revisit. New York’s exquisite balance between resinous orange, powdery vanilla and salubrious woods shimmers from moment to moment, always comfortable but never slack, always present but never loud. It is one of the greatest masculines ever, and probably the one I would save if the house burned down. Reader, I wore it for a decade.

I've tried multiple versions of this fragrance, all of them smelled good, this combination of notes does work.
I'd actually argue that they are not random, most of them are very typical of a traditional cuir de russie formula. The only odd ones I'd say are the pink lotus, myrrh and a very high dose of geranium.
trust me, I've tried just throwing in all the notes I like, you won't make a good fragrance that way. I'm not a fan of sandalwood and vanilla for example.
