Been considering for a while to buy one of their backpacks or Parka coats but I also question the quality of their products.

Being created by alpinists and such the brand prides itself on it's quality and weather resistant fabric. But is it really the best when it comes to that ? or any other brand can do better and TNF stand are just sheeps buying their stuff like the new SUPREME

Nah the North Face used to be made to last, but it has become something of a hype thing, I have a parka that my dad used in the 90's that's still holding strong but I bought a bagpack two years ago and it's already falling apart, maybe it's just two bad examples and I'm wrong but in my experience even a Quechua parka (if you live in Europe, don't think the brand even exists in america) is better quality, otherwise brands like Eider for parkas and jackets are way better quality

>> No.15836966

north face is bad unless you get their higher end stuff like the summit series

Exactly might as well save for patagonia

>> No.15837125

Go arcteryx. Get anything in the alpha line. Anything not for climbing Everest itself is just LARPing

>> No.15837136

only some of their stuff like summit series is actually something you'd do serious hiking in. most of it is fashion live in a rainy city maybe go on a casual dayhike shit.
the north face purple label is still really good, fashion oriented line.
i'm tempted to get one of the ducktail rain parkas on the outlet sale too desu.

>> No.15837142

>>15837105
patagonia owns the houdini hooded wind shirt can fit in a normal pants pocket and its enough for any dayhike with no or light rain. even way up north.

top end TNF is better than any expensive techwear brand and usually half the price. the mall shit is crap though

>> No.15837293

only when its on sale off season, its 7-8/10 stuff depending on garment if money is no object. i have a lot of summit series.

they were a normie brand when i went to middle school. every kid had a north face backpack before switching to sprayground in like 2015 and eventually not caring about shit anymore. north face now is what most people think of when thinking of jackets, other than Moncler and Canada Goose. they aren’t a really rare or special brand in the slightest, and never have been, at least in ny.

Used to work in an outdoor equipment store. Berghaus is better.

Reckon this is decent at all? It’s only got 550 fill power, but it’s fully waterproof which is pretty rare for a down jacket. It’s in the sale but I still don’t want to waste my money if I can get something better (never been into super technical looking clothes)

Depending on where you're going to be wearing it the Alpha line is pretty impractical.
An Alpha SV for city use is a really poor choice as the fabric is heavier than you need and the pocket placement is awful unless you're in a harness with a backpack on.

A spectrum from mall-tier garbage (Nuptse, Mcmurdo, etc) to /fa/shion tat (Black Label) to /out/ approved (Summit and Steep Series)

They're a huge brand with great marketing so they're in a wide selection of stores. Broken from their specialised brand roots to become a super brand now.
They can now afford to be a highly visible brand by sponsoring a lot of athletes, fund a lot of expeditions/films, etc.

Like I said. This anon is right. If you aren’t actually climbing mountains, then don’t bother

This brand is simultaneously hyped and so mass-produced that you can get decently performing stuff for /out/ purposes at bargains from grailed sellers

Some of those jackets are okay (the white one and the green print one); nowhere near as good as their purple label Japan exclusive pieces, all the other items are shit though

Arc'teryx isn't onions you total mouth breathing retard, only climbers athletes and such even know about, let alone pay for it.

It is not fashionable though most of their stuff is actually meant for mountaineering.

North Face is big with the onions latte crowd.

>> No.15841516

>>15838027
You dont want your down jacket to be waterproof it kills the breathability and makes it clammy. If you need water-proofness you wear a rain shell or hardshell over it. Each layer has its own purpose, and the point of it is that you can shed them and put them in your pack when not needed. Also the waterproof coating on something like that is just a DWR spray you can apply to any jacket, it won't keep you dry for long without a proper membrane.

Feathered Friends in Seattle makes the best puffies over all and dollar for dollar. I like the synthetic kind too like TNF thermoball (on sale at the outlet sale right now btw) patagonia's equivalent and the REI pertex ones they dry faster and punch above their weight for their costs. Less puffy for the same amount of warmth and far superior for casual wear.

>> No.15841527

If you're not trying to spend hundreds of dollars on a puffy (for example, casual use not for actual hiking/expeditions. don't cheap out on that for /out/) pick up the REI brand down ones when they're on sale (they sale often for same price as Uniqlo and they are 50x better made) or get one of the synthetic ones I mentioned above.

>> No.15841775

>>15841516
You get high quality Gore-tex, Derzimax, etc down parkas that are great.
You're right for /out/ tier down jackets they are designed to pack so don't use heavier materials but you do get some for /out/ use that are designed for extreme conditions. Rab do some if i remember.

haha that looks so goofy with fashion pants, the only time you'd wear a jacket like that would be with the full down suit. do they make the pants to go with it? or a 1 piece? if the specs wind up being good that hood looks pretty good compared to the norm for stuff that warm.
