Arso Fragrance Notes

Arso means “burned” and the masterfully rendered smokiness works with the crisp cool scent of pine to conjure up a cabin in winter, with a crackling fire on the hearth. You can sense the snow piling up outside, the ice on the windowpanes, the wildness of the forest and the chill kept at bay by the blaze, but you also get the warm indoor scents of well-worn leather and glowing incense, as well as the fire. The mood is calm and comfortable and safe – sitting with a glass of wine and good company while the winds howl outside. This is perfectly suited for the strong, silent type - the sort of man who could build a house single-handedly and maybe even chop down the trees to build all by himself. Quiet, reassuring and powerful.
Leather, incense, pine resin, cedar leaves

Most of the things I hated about fragrantica's last UX update have been fixed. However, I still hate that their lists\shelves are made solely of icons without any option to change it for text description. I just tried to look up a fragrance that I added to 'TO TEST' list some time ago but have forgotten what the bottle looked like. I've got ca. 300 fragrances added to this list and it's virtually impossible to find it among them.

The two best I've tried are amber cologne and musk cologne. In some sense they are quite similar, beautiful citrus opening (best citrus I've smelled in a fragrance), but musk cologne has a bit more depth due to the real musk in there, while amber cologne is more of an purely beautiful and somewhat subtle amber/citrus drydown.

I loved fanghorn and christmas wine. Fanghorne is norne with most of the sweetness removed and slightly more dirty. and Christmas wine is like a more syrupy decadent remarkable people

boreal was really good too, very green and airy, but the performance sucked. steading was a dirty honey smell (which bee obviously is way better than) and murkwood is like fanghorn but more peppery.

So I've went through all of my Jacques Fath Essential line samples. They're definitely worth testing and you can get the sample set of 12x2ml samples for 17EUR from their website, so give it a go. Here are short reviews starting from those that I liked the most and gradually moving to those I liked the least. Keep in mind that I obviously liked the more masculine ones more but all of them are quality but I wouldn't personally wear Red Shoes or some other more feminine scents. Treat the ordering rather as 'what am I closest to buy a bottle of'.
>Bel Ambre
Very snice amber of the milder (but not too sweet) kind. More DS Durga kind of Amber than animalic Ambra Aurea.
>Vers Le Sud
Vers Le Sud is a lovely aquatic fig fragrance with a big dose of ambroxan. It wears like a non-obnoxious crowdpleaser like Sauvage but unlike Dior it's really snicely balanced out. The aquatic feel of it is built around some pleasant green notes and saltiness so it doesn't smell neither trivial nor like a hardcore sea-like scents like Acqua di Sale or Fathom V. Really safe, fun but classy scent. I'd highly recommend it to everyone who loves fig or just wants some easy to wear but non-routine nor overplayed warm weather scent.
>Green Water (2016)
It's an interesting one, I get the classic citrus+neroli fresh accord as known from Neroli Portofino but it's mixed with a lot of mint and some deeper woody-spicy notes giving it more substance. It feels very chypre-y and in a way it reminds of Azemour Les Orangers. Caraway gives here a BO-like vibe just like in Azemour Les Orangers. Apparently it's a recreation of a Fath's classic under the same name from 1947 where they decide to don't have any budget limits for ingredients.
>Tempête d’Automne

>Velours Boisé
It's a non-edgy, sweeter cousin of Jovoy Les Jeux Sont Faits. Dry woods and spices with a big whisky punch and herbal bitterness coming from immortelle and wormwood.
>L'Orée du Bois
The defiition of a yellow floral
>Lilas Exquis
That's quite a sentimental one for me. It reminds me of lilac that always filled air around the house I've grew in in summer months. A beautiful floral fragrance that our local fanclub of FM En Passant might be interested in putting their noses on.
>Rosso Epicureo
Feminine tuberose + red wine. Very nice but unwearable for me.
>Curaçao Bay
Fun, nonchalant tropical scent. Nice subtle aquatic drydown. Jeremy talked about it in one of his latest niche videos lol.
>Red Shoes
A feminine rhubarb+blackcurrant floral with some rose reminding me of OJ Damask.
>Le Loden
Vetiver, vetiver, vetiver with a bit of smoky juniper. Very dry and smoky. I guess many people could like it but I've realized that over last year I started to really dislike vetiver note so it's hard pass for me.
>Les Frivolités
Smells like a high street designer floral-fruity big seller for women.

I should also ad that Cecile Zarokian is a really talented perfumer as it became plainly obvious after smelling her fragrances here. She's also the person who created MDCI Fetes Persanes.

Also don't get any more full bottles dude. You've got there juice for at least 2 years worth of spraying. Try to buy samples and decant first (look up links in the OP post and join your local fragrance groups on facebook if you want to have good deals on them). As a rule of thumb go for a small sample of 0.7-2ml first to weed out scents you don't like or simply like but are not crazy about. After finishing it, go for a decant of 5-10ml and if after finishing it you love it as much as at the first sniff then go for a full bottle. It'll save you a lot of money in the long run and you'll expose yourself to many new types of scents.

I see. I think niche might be a bit too challenging at the moment. That's where the most unique sells belong to but you probably should develop your nose a bit first to know what you actually like ingrdient/note-wise about fragrances. I would suggest starting with Tom Ford if you want something radically different from the fragrances you own but still easy to pull off and crowdpleasing. They're known for being kind of niche gatekeeping brand. Get samples of
>Tom Ford Oud Wood
>Tom Ford Tuscan Leather (or his Ombre Leather)
>Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille
>Tom Ford Neroli Portofino
The first three are deep, quite complex cold weather scents that would make a great replacement for LNDLH/Le Male/D&G in future. They're all crowdpleasing but have a lot of personality and a certain edge about them that will make many heads turn. All and each of them would make a great date/nights out scents. Neroli Portofino is a light, airy white floral+citruses scent. I think this is a kind of scent you might be missing in your rotation. White florals are one of the most elegant ingredients that can be used. Literally the olfactory equivalent of wearing a white, unbuttoned shirt while cruising in a sun in some classic convertible on winding paths of sunny Italy. Another good citric option that shouldn't be too challenging is Acqua di Parma Colonia/Essenza. These are a bit more mature but I think that every man ought to own a classic cologne for wearing it for themselves after taking a hot shower and shaving. It's also the most professional of all of these smells.

Smelling FdB's NYI made me swear off of ever trying anything from them again. It's just a clone of Jubilation, that's it. It has real oud instead of synthetic but I can't tell the difference, and I don't really get much out in Jubilation in the first place.

>> No.15799583

>It's just a clone of Jubilation
100% agree, I wouldn't buy it precisely for this reason. I get all of the basement clone houses in Bangladesh doing this but not a wannabe luxurious segment house with Swarovski crystals in their bottles asking $300 for a bottle. Their target are people like these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMy06QOgse0 not those who can't afford the original so fuck off and at least don't copy someone's else ideas. This however seem to be more and more common. Many self-proclaimed niche/luxurious houses started making blatant copies of some well regarded scents. Terenzi has been doing it a lot, not even to mention PdM. However, to be 100% I must admit that I prefer FdB NYI over Jubi as the latter has this strange blackberry-dark chocolaty-woody note on my skin that puts me off.
>It has real oud
I doubt that to be fair. I smelled plenty of natural oud fragrances and if it's there then in minimal proportions. The only fragrance from FdB I still want to try is Sahraa Oud. It made them to finals of 2014 Independent Category of The Art+Olfaction Awards but I will most likely only buy a sample or test it in Jovoy when it opens back in London.

Mon Guerlain, YSL Black Opium, Jean Paul Gaultier Classique, Lancome La Vie Est Belle (this one is massively popular to the extent she could find it tacky, it's basically normie women's Sauvage)
>a classic designer scent
Guerlain Shalimar Eau de Parfum that's the most classic oriental vanilla fragrance in the existence but might be a bit too dated if your gf is a Stacy
>exceptional niche that's still within your budget
Nobile 1942 La Danza Delle Libellule Exceptional Edition, I see 75ml bottles of it going for a bit less than $100 over here. It's a big sweet fruity (red apple)-vanilla bomb. One spray fills the room. It's very, very edible.
Carner Barcelona Palo Santo. This shit is brilliant. There are two accords. One is a woody made of sandalwood+vetiver+gaiac but on top of it you have smooth as fuck boozy vanilla yogurt. Very unique but still safe stuff. You can get 50ml for $100.
>a bit over your budget
Tabac Rouge Phaedon (it doesn't have vanilla listed in notes but it's the dominant scent - it's a bit cheaper and safer Tom Ford Tobacco Vanilla)

I think you describe it really well. The amber base that's present in Amber Kiso, Amber Teutonic and Bel Ambre is this comfy, warm feel that wraps around you like a blanket. It's subtly vanillic but predominantly resinous with a bit of hay and dry tobacco nuances (most likely coming from labdanum and tonka). Amber accord doesn't exist in nature and is rather made of a mix of labdanum, vanilla, benzoin, styrax, tonka, tolu&peru balsams, immortele absolute and fir balsam. You can tell that here it's particularly heavy on benzoin, vanilla and balsams.
>>15799309
I'm in the drydown of both DS Durgas, so I can share my thoughts. Amber Kiso is a clear winner. Amber Teutonic despite some fir and other coniferous qualities is tad too sweet for me. To its defense I can say that it thankfully stays three-dimensional and doesn't simply dry down to this plain vanilla drydown I know from many amber fragrances. Amber Kiso has a distinctive leather vibe around it that I really like. I guess it jumps to my top 3 favorite ambers along Ambra Aurea and ACCD.

I feel you. Thankfully my two favs are The Black Knight (that I got a bottle of) and Etruscan Water (that I enjoy opening of immensely but after 30minutes mark it doesn't click with me entirely, so I didn't get a bottle). But if one of them were The Lovers Tale I wouldn't get a bottle for the same reasons as you. Perhaps she should do 100ml EdP/EdTs out of some of these. The strength of these extraits is enormous. Let me explain it to you, since I have monitored the AA page for over a year now: they delete dissenting opinions. There have been 3-4 honest reviews calling it exactly what it is, and now theyre gone. Its like Reddit in that regard, where if you make one little comment about Dylan Blue, you get shadow banned. And now finally there is one more reviewer here, the model of a modern major general perfumista, that agrees with me that it is indeed an animalic stinkbomb. I dont even know why they named it Amber aurora, it should be myrrh miasma, myrrh machinations, myrrh macabre, or really anything else. You agree with fragrantica? then youll have to then agree that hacivat is indeed better than aventoos, since you know, it "scores" better. Speaking of myrrh, Bengale Rouge is a myrrh bomb, it was fun at first, I thought OoOoHhHh a modern twist on cinnabar, but nope, its sticky sweet syrup orangey(feeling) myrrh. My initial impressions were that it was the most gourmet avant-garde cinnamon roll I had ever smeared on my arm. While wearing it, I watched "Emma," which is a very lovely motion picture that everyone should view, and then went to bed. I woke up one hour and one half later, seeming out of nowhere, which is highly unusual for me. Im not saying it roused me from my slumber, but something did, and I had to immediately scrub that shit off. Etruscan water was very nice, I thought I finally found a salty perfume worthy of wearing, but I dunno, it just kinda fell flat later on. I did enjoy wearing it, and I do understand why people like it, but it just wasnt for me I guess, a solid "like."

When somebody complains about a perfume being too expensive, I don't really understand them. If you were to buy 6 perfumes that cost 300 dollars each it would be about 2000 dollars after tax. If they were 100ml bottles that would be approximately 6x1500 sprays, so 9000 sprays. If you do 3 sprays a day, that's 3000 days, which is 8 years. So 2000 dollars to wear expensive perfume every day for 8 years. That doesn't sound that bad to me. Now if you've already got a huge collection then yeah I can understand shying away from expensive bottles, but if you're not a hardcore collector then fuck it, don't settle for cheap shit.

>Ambra Aurea
We good bro, I just thought that you were one of these shitposters. It's easy to call something a 'grandma fragrance' or throw some random adjectives around online without actually having smelt the scent. I agree that it's amber of animalic kind (I think MPG has something even more animalic in their line up). I guess it's a bit of their bad to call it 'Ambra Aurea' not 'Ambergris Aurea' because I strongly believe that's where the animalic qualities of this PR come from. Can you pick up the salty notes there, too? I've smelled this ridiculously expensive Xerjoff Amber Star that has a very similar scent profile and they list ambergris there, so I'm positive it might be it that makes it stinky on your skin. However, this fragrance is quite mellow on me and my girlfriend were telling me that I smell good every time I wore it this winter. Skin chemistry I guess.
>fragrantica

Not him but I guess because most of people are retards who don't realize that a 100ml bottle is going to stay with them for years to come and once they start this hobby they buy shitload of full bottles on a whim just because they liked it on a paper strip or some youtube e-celeb shilled it to them just to learn in few months time that they actually dislike half of their stuff and they regularly wear only 2 or 3 of these bottles

>> No.15800441

>>15800427
You might have an addictive personality. Just set some sampling&decanting rules in stone and never buy a full bottle if you haven't finished at least 5ml of the scent. I had the same problem when the thrill and excitement of researching and ordering something online (and especially waiting for it to arrive) was way bigger than the actual enjoyment I could get from the scent a few days after getting it. Good news is that you can overcome it but, probably like me, you'll be buying on average 1 bottle per 100 samples you've tested. Thankfully it's still really exciting to just try out new things and it feels comfy to have a small collection but containing only frags that you absolutely adore. Thanks to that I smelled around 1000 niche frags over last few years without breaking a bank and have quite an extensive scent library in my mind

>> No.15800450

im not buying anything after the first of the year. I have like 2-4 bottles Im going to buy this week or next, then thats it. Ireally like everything I have, and I'm pretty much happy with that. But everyone in here is like, oh just sample bro, build your nose, you dont need a big bottle of everything. But heres the rub: you spend hundreds on samples, because well, I dont live in L O N D O N and smelling interesting perfumes costs money. And I guarantee you if you sample enough stuff, youre going to find one you really want, because its so good. So why even sample if you like what you have? Its like blue balling yourself if you dont buy a bottle of something you enjoy. I get it develop your nose, blah blah blah, but again, are you going to begin to not like what you have already? why do that to yourself? This sampling thing feeds the addiction, so Im going to put an end to it all and just bathe in the stuff I already enjoy. Maybe.
>>15800441
maybe like 1 in 30 for me at this point. Ive already stopped myself from buying stuff I like, but the temptation is there. Its always in the back of your head that youre missing out, and you would like to experience that scent again. Its like heroin maybe, if I tried it I would probably like it, so dont do it? Im solidly upper middle class, so money isint that big of an issue, but Im already finding that I just dont have enough time to wear what I have, even though I dont regret anything Ive purchased thus far.

>But heres the rub: you spend hundreds on samples, because well, I dont live in L O N D O N and smelling interesting perfumes costs money.
Join fragrance facebook groups and sample from places like Jovoy or these Polish niche perfumeries that have great sample prices. On facebook you very often can get a sample/decant for a price per ml lower than the full bottle retail because people splitting there buy the bottles on some sales/deals.
>Its like blue balling yourself if you dont buy a bottle of something you enjoy.
I also don't have problem with money, I have a high six-figures job. I just don't like hoarding and hate the fact that I realistically know that some of the bottles won't get more than 2-3 wears a year. At some point in past I had 40+ full bottles and had sold most of them when I realized that. I just feel so much better about having a smaller rotation. It gives me more mental space to enjoy what I have and I don't feel weird owning dozens of expensive beauty products that fragrances at the end of the day are.
>o Im going to put an end to it all and just bathe in the stuff I already enjoy. Maybe.
That's also an idea I've been playing in my mind for quite a while. Just to cut it all and forget about this hobby. I know enough to have almost perfect match for me for every season, time of the day, occasion, or character trait I want to stress with a fragrance.

>> No.15800497

heres another thing Ive been thinking about, do you think perfumers are trolling you? High fashion does it all the time with all the crazy runway shit that no one in their right mind would wear outside, but nowhere does that idea ever come up in the fragrance community.

Yes, obviously. Look at ELDO’s fragrances. For example look at their ‘Cologne’. That’s a massive inside joke they’re playing at the cost of the clients. They deliberately made it as uninspiring and bland as possible yet they charge $100 for it when you can just buy 20 litres of 4711 for this price and attach the following description to it:
>We pay allegiance to the concept of a modest cologne. Not an ordinary cologne, not a basic cologne. A proper cologne that achieves the perfection of simplicity.
>The Cologne of Etat Libre d’Orange is a tender introduction to our sensual collection, a gentle initiation into our subversive world. This is an adaptable cologne that showers your body with a fresh joy. It’s whatever you want it to be, and you make it your own. It’s an easy pleasure, a scent for everyone, to splash on all over and wear everywhere. We offer you a new and different way to experience Etat Libre d’Orange.

I sampled their perfume under the same name but it was rather in their standard round bottle. It seems that this differs only by a bottle Onto the scent. I hated it. I took a following note after finishing my sample: Opens strong medicinal skanky. The profile of the opening reminded me immediately some barnyard-ish ouds but apparently it's just pink berries giving a stinky facet to the underlying leather that comes out later (?). Opening is disgusting. The official release says that it's a very subtle sophisticated elegance fragrance which makes me think that I got a wrong sample as what I get is a punchy in your face repugnant smell but that's apparently an official sample. Dries down indeed to cypress + leather but leather has this dusty vibe that tells me that the leather accord here was crated with a lot of labdanum.

I only have designer frags and I'm looking to get into niche ones soon. My favorites are DHI and Bright Neroli (switched from Neroli Portofino because it didn't seem worth it). What's the best discovery set I can get myself for Christmas?

Here are some decent choices:
Frederic Malle (research to see which ones interest you)
Roja Parfums (the parfum colognes discovery set)
Jovoy (their perfume brand)

Do not listen to anyone in this thread telling you to buy the Francesca Bianchi sample set. She makes great perfumes but they are not a good choice for someone new to niche perfume. Not because of any bullshit snobbery like "your nose isn't developed enough to appreciate them" but more just because the more different notes you smell the more odd notes you can tolerate, imo. I wouldn't have liked any of her perfumes a year ago.

SOTD: Yatagan. The more I wear it the less wearable it seems to become, but it is gorgeous. It’s funny how lately I’ve just been wearing my designer stuff like Cool Water, DHI, Noir Extreme and AHSEE and when I went back to my Bianchi fragrances it made them seem even more outrageous and bold. It’s funny how when you spend so long enveloped in the world of niche your perspective of what’s wearable seems to shift and you forget just how far away from Sauvage and VPH some things really are.

No 5 wise, I've only owned og no 5, l'eau, and this... and it's the most viable of the three.

I only own og no 5 for sentimental reasons. To my nose, it opens with pure powder, and moves into a unisex musky woodiness with little projection through to the dry down.

None of the three exude individuality or character of the wearer and are underwhelming.

It opens with a dated soapy violet. Don't be discouraged though because couple minutes later a bit bitter herbal greenness comes out and balances the florals and dated vibe out. To be completely fair with you guys it's not my cup of tea but everyone who likes soapy/iris fragrances like Dior Home or Valentino Uomo Intense should try it as this might be just down your alley. It also has this fougery twist to it that reminds me of Silver Mountain Water (minus fruits). Years ago I was mass buying cheap fragrances like Rasasi etc. It beats all of them despite costing like $10 per what 10 liters? You can literally wash yourself in it for this price. I'm also not able put my finger or anything here that would smell obviously synthetic or screeching. That's really a very smooth blend but you should definitely test it first.

Idk mane, Yatagan for sure is not a very normie fragrance but I don't think it's a particularly challenging one. It's foresty and very slightly animalic but nothing like 'rape in woods' people describe it as. Interesting experiment to stay with designers for a while.

Frederic Malle, Etat Libre de'Orange (albeit in all honesty that's one of the most boring brands scentwise out there despite their marketing making them seem like the most interesting one), MFK has a very well priced sample sets but I hate almost everything from them, Xerjoff, Histoires des Perfums.
