I simply don't understand people paying big bucks for old formulations. If the reformulation was so severe just use your mind and try to abstract what qualities did you like about it and find a new, possibly better replacement. We literally live in the gold age of perfumery where you can find a perfect match for any taste. The only valid case for chasing old formulations is if you have some particularly precious memories associated with the scent.

Hate to say it, but you were wrong and are a bunch of gays. This came the other day and it smells fucking great. I get some similarity to BR540 but it's definitely not a clone. I got the magnetic cap version with the new atomizer which is 100% stolen from Dior (anyone who has sprayed Sauvage knows what I'm talking about. Fuck that fragrance, but the sprayer just feels so snice), so maybe this new formulation isn't as over the top powerful as the last one, but it smells damn good. Damn good. You're all a bunch of gays

>> No.15732965

>>15732705
The problem is that people smell the new formulation and write it off right away. If they were to wait a few months of giving the fragrance an honest shot they'd most likely find that it's not all that much different in terms of reactions and whatever. There are a lot of things going on that create this phenomena, and some frags are legit ruined in reformulation, but the vast majority of the panic is unwarranted and has more to do with anosmia than anything else. When you were a fragrance regularly you're obviously going to get used to it pretty quickly. There is not a single fragrance on earth that smells as strong to the wearer six months down the line as it did in the store. And if you run out of your signature scent and buy a new bottle, it's not going to smell the same to you as it did when you first tried it. If there is any reformulation or batch variation whatsoever, you're going to pick up on it. This can even have an effect on fragrances that HAVEN'T been reformulated given that all fragrances get a bit stronger with time before they get weaker.

When you use a fragrance over time, you're always adding a bit of air to the bottle. Air will eventually ruin a fragrance long term, but in the short term it actually makes it project slightly more due to the natural aging process. When a house releases a scent, it has to macerate for several months before it's ready to market. A lot of houses jump the gun and put fragrances out before they're ready (Creed is notorious for this) to keep up with demand, and people will complain about performance in the beginning, but then miraculously you'll stop hearing complaints about a year in when the bottles have aged. So if you have been wearing something for about a year, it has likely gotten stronger in that time. When you go out and buy a new bottle, even if there was no reformulation, it is going to smell weaker than the bottle you've become accustomed to

Are there any really good lime-forward scents? They always seem to pair lime with stuff like coconut, or bergamot, or something else that drowns it out entirely. I want something where lime is the main note. Something that smells like freshly cut limes and rinds.

Depends on what you're into. If you like more mainstream fresh scents, Basically anything from the Acqua di Gio line, Dior Sauvage line, Chanel's Bleu de Chanel line will work. If you're into sweeter youthful scents, 1 Million and it's various flankers, Armani code and its flankers are popular. YSL's La Nuit de l'homme, which is both sweet and fresh is popular, d&g the One EDP is popular, YSL Y and it's flankers. All of these tend to be crowd pleasers and safe bets

If you want to try more niche scents without breaking the bank you can utilize fragrancenet's afterpay option. It splits the cost into four equal installments charged every two weeks. With lower priced niche scents this comes to anywhere between 15-30 usd per installment. Higher end niche's will run around 40-70 usd per installment. Same goes for designers, anything above 35 usd qualifies.

I sprayed Arquiste Nanban in the morning so didn't want to jump straight into testing handful of these at once and instead I just picked up one that seemed to be fresh and light - Green Water. It's an interesting one, I get the classic citrus+neroli fresh accord as known from Neroli Portofino but it's mixed with a lot of mint and some deeper woody-spicy notes giving it more substance. It feels very chypre-y and in a way it reminds of Azemour Les Orangers. Apparently it's a recreation of a Fath's classic under the same name from 1947 where they decide to don't have any budget limits for ingredients. The entire line seems promising judging from this sample.

I need a little bit of help guys. So I want a elegant summer fragrance but I can’t decide between two. Which one would be more pleasant overall?

>> No.15733497

>>15733493
From these two I'd take Dior over Prada every time. However, if you are looking for an elegant summer scent then look for white flowers. White flowers like neroli+jasmine (or gardenia but there are not many masculine fresh ones) are olfactory equivalents of wearing an ironed white shirt. I would personally opt for Ferrari Bright Neroli over these two, it feels way more elegant but is still lovely and fresh.

Shit. I'm fairly new to fragrances. I fell for the Jeremy trap. Literally bought La Nuit. Though not gonna lie it smells SO good I don't regret it. I don't mind spending money on a fragrance if its as good as La Nuit but for summer.

I bought Nautica Voyage today for $20 and it just smells like clean clothes. Leaving it in the car to use it as an air freshener or something ...

My other frags:
Versace eros (got shilled on this one too)
Wanted by Night (sampled, its OK?)
I got the basic bitch starter pack.

I tried Invictus Paco Rabanne in the store and it was pretty good. It's sweet and fresh. Though a lot of people shit talk it.

Eh bro, my advice is to unsubscribe from all youtube fragrance channels. It seems like you're familiar with mall-tier classics (nothing wrong with tat), perhaps it'd be good to go a bit beyond Sauvages/BdC/YSLs. You can start here >>15732693. After testing the 10 fragrances in the middle circle you'll be way more sure what scents you like yourself. Also, always try to sample first and don't buy full bottles blindly. If you can't try them in a shop then try one of the websites in the OP post. I'm not sure if any of them are good for Aussies but for sure you got some nice sampling services there, too.

>I kinda do want to stick somewhat to designer though
Sure thing, this general has obviously some bias towards niche as there is plenty of people who are into fragrances for many years and niche is where most interesting thing happen but nothing wrong with wearing designer crowdpleaser if you like them yourself and that's your objective.

I'll take your advice. I'm never gonna blind buy anything again, even if it's $2. I can see how buying fragrances is a slippery slope. Initially I bought La Nuit and I thought that was it. But it lacked something, it didn't have longevity. So I bought another fragrance, WBN. Then Jeremy convinced me that I'll be a sexy boy if I get Versace Eros, so I bought it. I realized I couldn't wear the three I had in the summer. Initially I thought it was ridiculous that there are seasonal frags, but here I am, looking for a summer frag. I kinda want one end all be all frag. Whatever I buy next is gonna be my last frag until I've emptied at least one.

Glad to hear it, we’re not snobs, but the fact we’re not massively in to designer stuff isn’t through snobbery, but when you sniff fifty or a hundred designer fragrances they only go so far. They’re generally geared towards the masses and don’t take risks. With niche stuff you find they can offer much more. Which isn’t to say there’s no good designer stuff out there, one of my favourites of all time is Eau Sauvage, but given the choice between smelling Jeremy’s top ten compliment getters or the Francesca Bianchi set I know which I’d find more interesting.

You could probably buy 10-15 samples (at least) for the price of your Eros and Nautica Voyage, and if you enjoy those fragrances that’s all that matters, but consider there’s more to perfumery than getting attention from women (who won’t give you attention just because you smell nice).

Ended up dropping $250 on both his Quetzaly (which just has a really spicy note at first but fades off after an hour and leaves a really pleasant minty woody base) and the Mystery Oud (A little powdery at first but man I kept going back to whiff my writst for hours) because the local perfumery had a buy one get one 50 off. >Imaginary Authors Cape Heartache

I got them from Fragrance Samples UK and they have a deal where they throw in an extra sample if you spend £30. The extra sample they sent me is Blackberry and Bay by Jo Malone. I dunno how random it is, I think they probably try and match it with the frags you buy from them. Last time I ordered stuff from them a while back I got a sample of Aventus and they threw in a clone as well. They send the samples in a little drawstring pouch which is kinda fun

I'm trying Enclave just now, it's pretty nice, it's like a more complex La Nuit de l'Homme, at least in the opening anyway. I thought it smelled almost identical when I first sprayed it but once it's calmed down a little the mint and cardamom come out a lot more. I can smell incense which isn't listed in the notes. I don't have a ton to say about it at this stage but I like it so far, warm spicy with a mint note that cuts through it and keeps it interesting. Sometimes there's a bit of a dentist/old-timey mouthwash vibe, probably the clove/mint combo, it's a little funny but not offensive at all, it's really a nice fragrance. I'm assuming that'll fade as it dries down more too.

Neroli Portofino - holy shit I fuckin hate this. I like 4711, but this somehow manages to smell even more like an old lady than that. I don't really have much to say about it desu. Citrus and white florals. Which is weird because I like those scents but I think it's just Tom Ford in general that I don't like, every time I smell a fragrance of his it's not what I was expecting (in a bad way) and I find that jarring so I'm probably a bit more judgemental about them.

It's dried down a little now so it's become a bit more complex (only a bit), it doesn't smell bad at all, it's "nice" but it just didn't live up to expectations and would never be worth the price. It's basically a deeper 4711. I can smell the jasmine a lot more now and also the musk note which makes it more gay-man than old-woman. It's also pretty much a skin scent at this point too and I've only had it on for like 20 minutes at most

Which ones? I LOVE saffron in cooking (paella, seafood soups, saffron buns) but almost nothing I've smelled has even been close.
And when it HAS been close then it's covered by a huge gross rose...

If you follow IFRA guidelines you're only allowed to use 0.005% safranal in on-skin products, and safranal in a good absolute is around 70% so it's not very much at all that you can use. And safranal is the main ingredient that causes the saffron scent
But yeah it's very very complex but amazing. I feel bad for americans I've talked to who think that you can just use turmeric in cooking instead of saffron because it's cheaper and get the same effect

Yeah I'll check out Facebook groups like I think you mentioned before, I don't use Facebook often so really the only reason I haven't done so yet is cause I can't be bothered lel.

Honestly Enclave is nothing like Live Jazz, not even close haha. I'm enjoying Enclave for sure but they're two different things. Enclave is much darker and spicier than Live Jazz, there are citrus notes in LJ that aren't present in Enclave, and there's pepper and cinnamon in Enclave that aren't in LJ. I think standout note in LJ is grapefruit whereas in Enclave for me just now it's cinnamon. I'm sitting here smelling LJ from the splash bottle (which has definitely gone bad but the top notes are still there through the alcohol smell) and it's crazy to me that this is discontinued, it doesn't smell dated at all, in my mind it's a perfect summer fragrance. It's fresh and clean with a kick to it that makes it very masculine.

I was probably a bit harsh on the Neroli Portofino desu, it's not explicitly bad, but there's just something about TF frags that makes me angry and I can't quite put my finger on what it is haha. If I'm going to say something nice about it it's that the orange and the jasmine smell very natural and real. At this point the NP is 100% a skin scent whereas Enclave which I sprayed first is still projecting, with the nature of the fragrances that's to be expected I suppose but it's astonishing how quickly NP disappears on my skin.

I would not recommend applying fragrance on your underarms; it won't last as long, and however long it does last, it will clash with your BO and make for an unpleasant experience. Lads, I bought my girlfriend a set of 3 candles from Nicolai. The wax smells really snice but they don't smell after lighting them up. We tried two and after ca. 20minutes you must basically put your nose an inch from it to get anything. Is it normal for scented candles or I got some old batch or something? Should they be lit for much longer to start smelling? How long? 30 minutes, 1 hour? The set was only about 60EUR so I would forget about it and don't bother emailing them but as it was a gift for her bday I think I will complain and ask for a refund as seeing her all excited about them when she was opening the box and then getting more and more disappointed when they didn't seem to give off any smell was pretty sad to see. She was very sweet about the entire situation but ngl I'm a bit pissed off. For this money I could buy her a big Diptyque or Frederic Malle candle that smell amazing but I went for instead Nicolai as I am a big fan of her perfumes. Frankly I don't know much about candles, so any input appreciated.

Onto Every Storm a Serenade - this one's definitely not what I expected. Again I can't think of a time or a place to wear this. I expected it to be much more aquatic, but you know the smell of fresh sawdust, when you cut wood with a jigsaw? That's the most prominent thing in the opening of this. I get the sea-salt vibe, and I get the 'feeling' of eucalyptus before I get the actual scent, like the menthol sensation comes first and the eucalpytus doesn't actually appear until it's started to dry. This might be a bit weird and TMI but this reminds me of my own sweat lol. After spraying it I had to check under my arms. There's a bit of overlap with Cape Heartache in that there are those woody notes, like ESaS is the brother and CH is the sister. I like these both but they're more room scents to me.

I'm writing my thoughts on these not long after spraying them so I'm probably not giving them the proper time to develop desu

I don’t know much but the first time you use them you should light them for the maximum time it says (I bought a big one once and it had to burn for four hours on it’s first use). It’s the liquid warming up that gives off the aroma so if there’s not enough liquid and enough heat then it’s not going to work as well. Plus some candles are just shit, there’s that possibility. You could fill Buckingham Palace with some shitty Yankee Candles so Nicolai should be selling something good.

I waited a while before trying this one because I can still smell both of the Imaginary Authors perfumes that I sprayed into my elbows, they're actually still projecting a bit which is quite impressive given that it's around six hours later and it was just 1-2 sprays.

Anyway

This one doesn't seem terribly complicated at first, it's very green, notes say mint, orange blossom and galbanum in the opening - I get the orange blossom and the mint a lot more now that it's drying a little, like the last one the menthol vibe was there in the opening but I couldn't explicity smell mint, but it's coming along now. At first the most prominent by far was the green note which I suppose is the galbanum. It gets a bit spicier too, it's not spicy at all at first, but I'm getting a sort of ginger/cinnamon sort of thing (these aren't listed in the notes) and kinda medicinal so maybe it's the myrrh note? There's also ivy which I feel like would be hard to pin down but I get why it's listed. The dry down is definitely more interesting. I said in the last thread I was looking for summer day/night frags and I think this would be a good summer night one. The opening doesn't scream summer so at first I was a little confused but I get it now that it's dried a little. I like this, I'll need to live with it for a while I think but first impression is good, maybe I'll actually cop a bottle eventually

Kinda changed my mind about this one now. It's dried down completely and it's pretty weird, doesn't smell anything like it did at first. It's still somewhat nice but I have no idea what's happened, I can't even tell what the note is that I'm smelling and it's difficult to describe, maybe I've just been smelling stuff for too long today. It's still alright but the vibe has totally changed. Hmmm I'll need to revisit this one for sure.

Okay so the last one, the one that they threw in for free, Jo Malone Blackberry & Bay. When I first sprayed this I thought I smelled grapefruit right away. I was like nah, it must be blackberry and I'm just a noselet. Looked up the notes and sure enough grapefruit is a top note. The blackberry comes in just after it settles and it blends very nicely with the grapefruit. The blackberry isn't ultra sweet so it smells very natural to me. Like what other people are saying in the thread, this doesn't seem to last long at all. I actually really like it but it's becoming a skin scent super quick
