This. I don't want to sound pretentious, but I feel like we were the last analog IRL subculture, and it was sort've an amalgamation of past subcultures. Like a last hurrah for the idea of youth subculture as it was in the 20th century.
Think of all the kids nowadays who won't know what it's like to break into abandoned buildings with their friends, while dressed like underage dock workers, to drink cheap tallboys and spray paint. Won't know what it's like to pregame 20 deep at your friends crackpad excuse for a house, getting ready to go see a weird mixture of hardcore and indie bands at a sleazy dive ba, where you can get served at 18. Won't ever get to try to cram their unwashed dick into a girl dressed like a thrift store librarian, who's not too prissy to drink a 40 on the train tracks and pee outside. Not only that, but they didn't have to meet her online and deposit money to her venmo. It was also one of the most socially liberal time periods to be a young person, but without all the "woke" bullshit psyops. I'm writing a book goddammit.

Ha I dunno that's just a hollow version of the style. I feel like part of it was buying everything except your jeans and shoes at the thrift store.
The slim jeans thing itself was probably just a rejection of the baggy jeans that came before, and with it a rejection of the cultural emptiness with which we viewed the early 2000s, compared to previous generations.

Zoomer here, did this all when I was 13. As for the rest I know about 40 people in my school and several more in other schools which suit that description. You'd be surprised but although it technically is a different time, history still repeats itself.

That did; Hedi Slimane has been hugely successful since Dior Homme, in the 2000s.

Dior Homme was more of an accurate, on the pulse depiction, as Hedi Slimane hung out with Pete Doherty around that time, and documented the burgeoning rock scenes.

This is the most crucial thing. I personally wasn't a fan of the circa 2010 aesthetics and music, but it was at least a much less stifling time with less social alienation. Every young person being on Facebook at the time was lame though.

All sorts of shit. I still play music, and make art, do outdoorsy shit, and take road trips to see new places. But, at the end of the day, once you get to be 30 or close to it, you start thinking about setting down, buying a house, stabilizing your career, etc.

Yeah, everyone was chill at the time. Outrage humor was the thing and you could joke about almost anything, but people that didn't fit the norm were still accepted. Nowadays it's rampant tribalism once again and walking on eggshells about what you can say or do.

M8... pretentiousness was the name of the game back then. The more obscure, the more social accreditation. From beer to music to clothes... the aura of pretentiousness and exclusivity was LITERALLY the running joke among normies looking in.

>but I feel like we were the last analog IRL subculture. Like a last hurrah for the idea of youth.
Everyone thinks this about their generation when they get older. Youth subculture still exists... it's just blacked now. I'll totally grant you that this was the last "white dominant" subculture.

>Think of all the kids nowadays who won't know what it's like to (insert coming of age experiences here)
M8... You're just old and out of touch. Again, everything you mentioned young people still do in some capacity. I'm in my mid 30s, presumably grew up alongside you and can assure you; youth are still up to the same shit. Clothes change, music changes, some drugs get swapped out for others... but the experience remains largley the same. I've got friends with younger siblings and they're up y2o the same bullshit, different soundtrack and uniform.... definitley more electronics... but people and their carnal desires remain effectivley the same from one generation to the next.

> It was also one of the most socially liberal time periods to be a young person, but without all the "woke" bullshit psyops.

This here is where you are DEAD WRONG. Who do you think is pushing the extreme SJW politically correct attitudes of today? It's Millenials. We are undoubtedly the most outspokenly, overwhelmingly sensitive and politically correct generation around. It's not Zoomers working for Buzfeed, Washpost and Vice...It's us. Our generation grew up soft and ideological and statistics back the fact that for the first time, Zoomers are far less sensitive and more conservative than the generation that preceded them.

Millenials have effectivley become super-boomers as a whole in the public conscious.
>Do as we say, not as we did.
>Kids these days will never know!
>Remember when we could do ______ as kids?
>Retroactively change rules so kids can't do ______.

We've effectivley flipped the script in adulthood and are now blaming a younger generation for the shit show that WE created... No longer is it the Boomer-tier Christian Right behind the acts of censorship and revisionist history in the name of morals and standards. The Millenial Left have taken their place as societies moral arbiters; the censors and chancellor cancellers. Building the new world in the name of equity and political correctness.

I ask you to take off the nostalgia goggles, think back... Do your best to put yourself into that 19 year old state of mind and then have a conversation with younger person. Kids, at their core, have not changed all that much in the past 10, 15, 25 years... you have.

I understand what you're saying about nostalgia goggles, but I insist it was still a different time. I feel like zoomer youth culture is more clean and sterile. I'll admit, our subculture gave rise to hyper consumerism in the mid 2010s. But the late 00s and early 10s, there was more of an emphasis on the DIY thing, creativity, and it was just a little dirtier. I don't really see young kids spinning 40s under the bridge, and there's this emphasis on being very clean and fresh, and liking very "produced" things. This could have to do with the "blacked" thing. A black guy I worked with once was bullshitting with me about style, and said "That look is cool on white boys, but we have to make sure everything is fresh and new, so that people don't have a more negative opinion on us". So that's an interesting theory for the shift.
Although it might be millennials pushing that agenda now, I have a feeling that it's the same well adjusted normies millennials who got into the hipster thing after it became commodities.
I remember when those people started coming into our dive bars, and our shows, and acting like we were too rowdy and ruining the "scene", but it was actually kinda our thing.
Also regardless of current attitudes, it doesn't mean attitudes weren't different then.

>I feel like zoomer youth culture is more clean and sterile.
I agree that it is... but again ask yourself who's fault that is?
The late 00s/early 10s were a time of MASSIVE gentrification across the entire U.S.. Particularly in the areas most remowned for the exact hipster style youre describing. Millenials moved into neighborhoods with "character" in droves on their parents dime... priced the original inhabitants out and the "authenticity" of the culture along with it.

In some instances it really was unique. I think I was just barely too young to really experience the more truly weird corners of it.

This was before the Patriot Act, so public surveillance was much shoddier, which made places like abandoned warehouses hotspots for parties and shows. You could actually get away from the mainstream still. That's extraordinarily hard now, especially since landlords caught onto the Millennial Hipster act and bought up all the empty real-estate. And now, of course, they can monitor their shitty broken down buildings a lot better while they try to turn them into luxury "industrial apartments" or the next Whole Foods.

I've said it before but the internet was way better right before everyone figured out how to monetize every aspect of it.

>>15643066
>blaming a younger generation for the shit show that WE created
Not the anon you were commenting on, but is anyone blaming the younger generation? I don't disagree that shit like Vox and Buzzfeed and the woke psyop shit was the fault of Millennials, but I still feel bad for Zoomers not getting the freedom we got to experience back in the day. Like I said above, "Big Brother" was much less sophisticated when we were young. That's not the same as blaming Zoomers. But the socially liberal times Millennials experienced were in part because none of the soon-to-be woke Millennials had any influence. Now they're older and employed and do.
Also, not all Millennials are into the woke shit. Hell, not even all lefty Millennials tolerate that shit.

>> No.15644336

>>15644326
This is a systemic problem, really. It's hard to place the blame squarely on the shoulders of Millennials who were moving to shitholes so they could embrace the freedom of their youth without someone breathing down their neck, when the economy crashed because of white-collar criminals who were effectively pardoned for their crimes by Obama. There was a lot of economic and political corruption brewing that youngsters who just barely reached the voting age wouldn't have been smart or mature enough to realize, let alone respond to.

>It's hard to place the blame squarely on the shoulders of Millennials
Fair, part of the blame falls on their boomer parents for footing their bill.

>who were moving to shitholes so they could embrace the freedom of their youth without someone breathing down their neck
M8... you act as if large portions of this generation weren't weren't being bankrolled by their parents.

Maybe it's just my anecdotal experience, but I lived in many of the hipster houses you described in this era. The vast majority were owned by a wealthy persons parents, who then sub-let rooms to their kids friends.

The blame of watering down the "authenticity" of the neighborhood does fall largley on the shoulders of Millenials who wanted their cake and to eat it too.

They liked the rugged aesthetic, they liked joking about being in the "hood"... but overall crime was on a stark decline nationwide and these "fringe" neighborhoods were relativley safe... But as more and moved.. you were bound to have instances. These instances drew police. These instances sparked "revitalization" efforts.... those revitalization efforts fucked over lots of good people who had been working long before the hipsters moved in to build their neighborhood. The people who had already cleaned up the neighborhood enough for hipsters to feel comfortable moving there in the first place.

Let's not get it twisted. Millenials weren't moving into utter dangerous shitholes. They were moving into neighborhoods just on the light side of any given cities dividing lines.

>> No.15651192

no dummy, the thing you don't understand that the recession also coincided with a large die-off of population.

These "wealthy people" were really just people spending their windfall inheritance money.

most people were lower middle class. If you're talking about living in a coastal city, thats different. The wave was everywhere, you didn't need to live in brooklyn to be a part of it, and assholes that think they were in the central nerve just because they lived in NYC are about as clueless to how widespread and deep the culture ran through the midwest and beyond.

and yeah, we did move into dangerous shitholes. The thing was that once there were enough of us to rebrand a place as an "artist neighborhood", the rent went up. that's not our fault, thats the landowners. But fuck us for trying, right?

windowlicker prick.

>Fair, part of the blame falls on their boomer parents for footing their bill.
Not untrue. Not true in all cases either, but I don't think boomers are without blame. Even so, I think it's mostly a larger problem with American economics and blaming individuals misses the forest for the trees.

>Millenials weren't moving into utter dangerous shitholes.
I wasn't saying they were utterly dangerous. You misinterpreted me. If you're a kid who moves from your parents four or five bedroom house to some squat in Brooklyn that doesn't have running water, you're moving into a shithole. But the benefit for these kids who had money is 1) they knew they wouldn't wind up homeless on the streets if something went wrong, so these "shitholes" were less scary, and 2) their parents back in Connecticut weren't around to complain that the music was too loud. That's what I mean about having no one around who is breathing down their neck. Yeah, eventually these neighborhoods got a greater police presence, but as you noticed, that's how it goes.

>The blame of watering down the "authenticity" of the neighborhood does fall largley on the shoulders of Millenials who wanted their cake and to eat it too.

I don't disagree with you. I think making the poverty and struggle of a neighborhood the core components of it's "authenticity" is a pretty bad take though, and it's the take that the hipsters you are complaining about had. Lots of Bodega owners and people who owned businesses in these areas were happy to see people with more money come in, because it meant more people living there would pay more for regular groceries.

Usually when people complain about gentrification it's because they're worried about displacing working people and minority groups. Even if you could somehow shame these white hipsters and prevent them from moving into neighborhoods where they could stand to save some money, the poor people in those neighborhoods would still be poor. It wouldn't solve racism.

Good post. People really over generalize how many millennials had rich parents. It's as dumb as the idea that every white person is from an upper middle class background. Funnily enough the upper middle class millennials came into the scene in a way in which I reference towards the end of my post here
>>15644096

I was raised by a single working class dad who barely made ends meet, and most of the people I originally hung out with were also from working class or lower middle class backgrounds. I mean that was a large portion of our population. There was a recession going on. It makes me feel like the "parents money" thing is a bit of a straw man honestly. When I lived in a city house with a bunch of roommates, noone had mommy's money. We'd just ask our drug dealer roomie to front us til we got our next paycheck if we were short on rent.

JFC this was the shit.
Literally the rise of microbreweries, pop-up coffee bars, army surplus stores, vinyl record stores, hackerspaces and revitalization of old commercial buildings in Chicago. Rickety old warehouses and factories turned into lofts and old-timey "industrial" aesthetic was on the rise, with peaked caps, cardigans, vests and penny loafers, ironic pre-ww1 machinery and heavy butcher block tables with cast iron legs, and everyone was into making their own vaping flavors and craft beer. Bitcoin was in its infancy and people were getting hyped on it along with all sorts of libertarian schemes after the 2008 crash. People were trying to be happy, but it kind of felt forced, not unlike squeezing your dick into a tight virgin art girl because you two think you love each other. The problem is that now she is a depressed art hoe two xanny bars away from killing herself because she couldn't keep a man. This is my Chicago, which tried so hard to be the new tech city, but somehow can't hack the transition away from being just a agricultural finance/transport hub.
You want to see an exploitation of this, go play the first Watch_Dogs. It's annoying as fuck to see them mangle your city aesthetic, but the shit still smells like it, so I roll with it.
20 years ago this shit started in the Wicker Park/Humboldt Park-to-UIC/Halsted near west neighborhoods and kept growing outwards towards Brighton Park/Bridgeport on the South side and Logan Square, Ravenswood and Avondale/Jefferson Park on the N/NW Side. Now the minorities got smart and took out mortgages so the rental companies won't simply push people out for new hipster growth and now its a bit of a standstill. It might leapfrog the neighborhoods but who knows if Chicago won't simply drive out all the white/asian creatives for gibs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3Po3sLIiJU
This is what some of the hipster neighborhoods felt like, when Rahmbo was mayor trying to court tech and finance. Sad, really.

Continuing, most of the manifestations of this aesthetic would grow outwards along the CTA rail lines and crosstown bike paths, and would extend even into some suburbs like (((Oak Park))) or (((Skokie))), which one could argue was the whole point in the first place. There are some pockets where this aesthetic still holds, like in the suburbs where people are still into the 3d printer fad, but ever since retrowave emerged it has started to become a bit tired. Now retrowave is on the way out and it seems shitty rap music is replacing any "indie" culture. It seems (((they))) are hellbent on crushing any aesthetic or scene beyond their control, through using techniques like Embrace, Extend, Extinguish, or even straight up suppressing any sort of news about it.

You want the money because it brings in development. Bayniggers have a problem with development because muh painted ladies and antiques with a pronounced lack of affordable housing options (not that preserving antiques is bad, I'd be pissed if they'd start bulldozing our old architecture like churches and other buildings for more ugly-ass steel and glass, but I look at the prices/rates and it's looking absolutely ridiculous).
Furthermore, pic related is why shit is so expensive to do anything: you have to build factories like fucking hospitals nowadays, granted it's Mirror's Edge but seriously, any comparably new value-adding technology is located in such standardized manufacturing plants/laboratories. It's almost impossible to build any sort of space that would be practical or cheap enough for a local startup to use. Chicago needs better manufacturing plants but there is no money to refit any of the old infrastructure around us to those standards, and thus we are stuck with miles upon miles of empty warehouses.
Also to me, late 2000s/early 2010s reminds me of the appropriation by IKEA of DIY culture and aesthetics and bleaching them to meaninglessness. It's like a Hot Topic for Karens, without any offensiveness scrubbed. Hence the Mirror's Edge pic.

Basically this. Look at the current fight over right to repair between large established tech firms like Apple and even Tesla versus smaller startups like iFixit and Louis Rossmann providing service to the OEM products and anti-competitive practices Apple is engaging in over repair and customizability of their
products. I remember pre-2010 laptops being shilled super hard because of the build quality and aesthetic compared to "business laptop" Thinkpads. Now look at how the tables have turned.
DIY is based primarily because it keeps money in your pocket and out of the assholes trying to lock your culture and tools away from you. Don't let it get stolen from you.

It's because most of the people who did hipster shit went on to do third wave feminism, so the result was combining hipster aesthetics with body """positivity""" and doing what's comfortable instead of what's attractive which is the core of anti-fashion. The result was this cacophony we have today where trad elements from hipster shit are being combined with hair that's half anime colored and half natural with the bangs murdered every time for some reason, nose rings that look like knockers, and being fat and smelling like shit. Tinder and hookup culture also played into it, but I'm not going there because I sound like /r9k/ enough as is. Guys somewhat did the same thing if you consider overindulgent vidya consumption an analog to girls doing body positivity due to it being unattractive to the opposite sex. I've seen guys that would have been wearing graphic tees ten years ago try to do the hipster aesthetic but in a shitty "powerlevel" way where they'd wear patterned button-ups but the pattern would be the mushrooms from Mario or something. Basically the hipster look evolved to be as shitty as the people who swore by it once upon a time.

such an easy look. just buy or borrow a black leather jacket from someone, skinny jeans and a weird shirt from the dollar store and thin pullover from your dad if it's cold out and you're one of us

nothing to it.

Mcinnes created Vice and williamsburg hipster scene in the early 2000s, sadly, most of it was scrubbed by the same media he created because they became turbo sjws, google it up, but look at pre-2010 stuff
Dash Snow was an epitome of hipsterism, hipster aesthetic and its way of life, and if you never even heard of him, you were not part of the hipster scene, my fellow redditor

most of my early 2010s hipster friends turned into stoodents, like they're still pursuing advanced degrees. that or they do shit like tattooing or work for an ngo. None of them went into STEM or do anything technical or financial.

some of the girls looks were cute but most of the dudes looks are basic. it's kind of like how nerdy tech guys dress now.

what happened then was not NYC centric and if you think it was then you're ignoring the lived experience of all your peers.

A lot of the people doing the SJW thing were the failed elements, art school rejects who lost their shit because their shitty dime a dozen "art" only got them reblogs on a Tumblr. I was there, and some of us were just there in that moment to have fun and live. They all were there to showboat and hop the next trend because at this time people were shitting all over scene and emo, and if you were still doing emo pass 2008 or scene past 2010 you were seen as joke who needed to leave high school behind and grow the fuck up.

This stuff still exist in small pockets, it has receded from the internet and the big city Williamsberg style shit of the 00s-early 10s, when everything was a hipster joke, and you even got some clever shit out of the whole ironic-hipster bashing from hipsters (hipster hitler, LATFH, Hipster Runoff) 2011 was it though. Occupy, that sort of fashion starting blending into everything else, even hip-hop. And there was just too many shitty hipster bands and bad for the fuck of it music.

I remember Tumblr around 2012 because that's when it seemed like all the guys started leaving the shit behind, and all the girls who were once cool and level started going off with the third wave feminism shit and purposely started dressing and styling themselves to look like shit.

But a lot of that stuff starts falling to the wayside. I think we have a few more years of millennials acting like twats before the rest (younger millennials) realize reality.

For example, if anyone remembers Molly Soda, who was a popular tumblr girl in the early 10s, she's dropped all the shit. The crazy hair colors, unshaved armpits, looking like she fucking stinks, and now wears a natural hairstyle and looks pretty normal, still hipsterry but normal and isn't really on the radfem shit anymore.

I suspect that a lot of them have either fallen off into normal life or like her are just actively online but realized the moment has passed.

i admire your conviction but i'm gonna have to disagree.

I was attending a Los Angeles suburban high school in the early 2010's and saw firsthand the rise of Odd Future and the complete acceptance of Diamond Supply and Supreme among "normies."

All I saw was completely blind consumersm, Facebook clout chasing, and degenerate behavior for its own sake (luckily xannies weren't in the picture).

great people who i remember fondly but immensely troubled.
