Suggest a watch for me. I already have like 7 shitters and I really enjoy them, help me justify buying another one. I'm going through a checking all the boxes phase, so what am I missing? I own a Vostok Amphibia Yachtmaster, Dan Henry 1964, Seiko Aqua Terra homage, Casio Royale, Laco Type A Flieger, Pagani Design Yachtmaster homage and an Omega 1967 Seamaster deVille. I'm looking at a Chinese Sugess moonphase maybe.

The wife is looking for an /out/ watch. Should be battery powered (or solar), so no mechanical watches please.
Also, she doesn’t want a pure digital, so it needs a main clock running on an analog dial.
So it’s either some random quartz watch (citizen pro divers go down to quite small sizes) or if we’re going marketed towards /out/, a huge behemoth.
But what about baby g?
While it doesn’t have the “triple sensor”, pic related has a step tracker, besides the usual fare and it’s small-ish and quite cheap.
Anything I need to know about that watch, besides the fact that the resin will get disgusting within 10 to 20 years?
How good is the step tracker for logging hiking distances?
How much of an annoyance it the blue cheese if you don’t actually want it?

>> No.15610757

>>15610725
It's a relatively cheap watch you're asking about, I wouldn't worry about what issues you'll have 10-20 years out.
I'd focus on usability, in particular if your wife is familiar with the functions of the watch and how to use them. Does she need a complicated citizen or g shock, or would something more basic be better? If it's just for basic outdoor use then a baby g should work just fine.

Never understood why the fuck people use that term, olive colour on my country means green because olives are green.

Think about this >>15610443 or the orient big crown date point, also on 36mm and the dial can be green like your skin and it is said that bronze colours look good on dark skinned people.

>> No.15610774

The 10 years issue is of course a non-issue, especially given the price, but I still find it annoying, since that would be totally avoidable (or maybe it is, my rotten g-shock is quite old, maybe the new ones are better).
Contrary to popular belief, she’s not dumb, just because she’s female, but yeah, she’s not really into tech and complicated machines. So easy use would be handy. I’d assume the basics (stop watch, timer, alarm) are easy enough, as with all casios(the three mode/start-stop/reset-set buttons are still the basic user interface), but the whole step tracker and Bluetooth stuff is a bit worrying. But at 60-70€ those can probably just be ignored if uneeded.

>> No.15610834

I never assume that someone is familiar with tech, gadgets or multi functions regardless of their gender. Most often I find that the KISS principle is the best way to go with a gift, especially if you don't know how knowledgeable the person is that you're giving it to.
I'd probably get her a nice analog citizen with eco drive, and if later on she wanted something with more functions I'd pick it out with her so she can decide for herself what she feels comfortable with.

We planned our operation for four more days, learning the typical movements of the target tribe. What we did not anticipate is for the buryat shaman to raise the bodies of dead bears to fight back. We have lost our indigenous tracker and translator, our demolition expert and our sniper. An enemy tribe has been roaming around our home base. We have a 24 hour patrol to protect our ration supplies. Hope is frail, I am worried my men may turn on me. They blame our lack of success on the fact we cannot coordinate our attacks. My friend told me I was a retard for "wasting" my money on a JLC when I could have used it on travelling, food, drinks and experiences. I don't get it, travelling is such a waste of time and effort. It is stressful, you don't see anything you can't see in your home or on your computer screen. And don't get me started on how useless liver poison is.

I have travelled on my own a lot and there are definitely times during all trips where you feel a bit lonely or bored. It’s usually easy to meet people even if you aren’t an extrovert though, and especially if you stay in a hostel.
I don’t travel for super specific reasons. It just puts me in a good mental state to be in a foreign place now and again and to experience different cultures and to see beautiful nature.
I think it’s good for my brain too, for example to be in Georgia with their strange alphabet and lack of English speakers outside the big cities. Having to arrange transport and a place to stay is a fun little challenge.

It’s also maybe different for people who don’t have a lot of vacation days. I have quite a lot so why not get out there.

eBay. Lots of copernicus ones are on it in several of the styles. Watchuseek has some threads on spotting the right movements.
The dial might not be genuine because I always see the dials with the little metal bits.
I’m really pleased with it regardless. Not bad for $100

Luxury watches are a less acceptable form of spending money on things you want rather than need. Since they don't understand watches, it seems like pointless decadence. And likewise, if you don't like travel, then don't do it.

But truly blessed is the man who appreciates the myriad of luxuries for what they are. Some like to watch and feel, others like to act and think. Some vacations are totally not worth it, but then, so are some watches. A computer screen doesn't give the same sensory input that you can get from actually being in a place, or give the whole picture of a watch. Would you rather see a video of a watch with a tourbillon and a dial that shines a bit differently in the light, or would you rather hold it in your hands?

Also, I'd just drop it into my trading account, but if I have to think of it as a non-investment:
>vacation to a place famous for it's food (not right now)
>clothing that I'm always on the fence on not because of what it is but because of the cost
>Funs and ammo (but they're overpriced right now)
>new laptop
>new used bike to tinker with and improve

Supremely based. I've had a Raketa World time for a few months now and I've worn it near everyday. Obviously I went for the model with the rotating bezel, but I've had my eye on one like yours for a while now. Does yours have a 24 hour movement? I'd say my one gripe with this watch is that it has a 12h movement with a 24h dial, especially since I know Raketa was famous for its 24h movements.

yeah, I was sort of expecting the USA to be downplayed, especially with havana in the US east coast zone. so I guess the idea that they needed to keep an eye on us and places with our military bases is more probable than an exotic allure. that would explain samoa, Honolulu, alaska, and continental US making the cut over, say, Auckland, Tahiti, Vancouver, Mexico City, Havana.
but contrast that with the representative cities on Western watches, newsprograms with world clocks etc: sure, Moscow always represented that zone even during the cold war, but there was never any other soviet representation.
makes the Soviets seem really obsessed.

This conversation actually made me curious, so I looked at a few similar western watches to compare. Seiko made a world time watch that includes Moscow but no other Eastern bloc cities, which is what I would have expected. But I also saw watches from other companies that used no Eastern bloc cities whatsoever. World timers from Zodiac and Tissot gave Moscow's time zone to Baghdad, while another watch from Movado gave it to Aden in Yemen. Obviously none of these watches are from American companies, so the comparison isn't quite 1:1, but I'm sure there's some sort of cultural or propaganda factor informing the city choice on these watches that I'm not equipped to engage with academically.

It's very interesting both from a medical standpoint and from a hydrological one. Also, it gives an interesting perspective on the issue of open data and privacy. REally, highly reccomended read!

Also, it's written by John Snow.

It's certainly a problem with the balance, the spring is probably dirty. It has the same effect as magnetization (which tends to be fairly rare anyway), the hairspring coils stick together making the swing shorter and faster. No regulation will help with that. Unless you know what you're doing, you need to get it professionally serviced, which it probably needs anyway.

Because mechanical watches are super neat, and good ones are more than accurate enough for everyday use. However, good mechanical watches are expensive and many of them need winding, which is something I would likely forget to do, and they're much more expensive to repair, especially if you don't have a watchmaker in town, so I prefer quartz as a matter of price, convenience and usability for myself even though I think mechanical is cool.

Well, we’re on the second day of wearing this. Been wearing the San Martin 62mas most of the year and boy is this one way more comfy. I really like my 62mas but I always take it off or fiddle with it several times throughout the day.
As you can see, it sits slightly to the tight side (perfect in the morning, but the picture was taken at 6PM) but I’m sort of between links and prefer this to having it looser. It feels very light and unobtrusive.
It’s too early to talk about accuracy of course, but it doesn’t seem to have lost or gained anything over the past 28 hours.
Very happy so far.

Hmm I’m not a big fan of the yellow gold+steel look, but Seiko’s renderings are always horrible so who knows what it looks like irl.
For me, if I wanted a watch of this type I would prefer a more sporty Casio Edifice or a cleaner steel version, but this is just my subjective aesthetical preferences. I do enjoy radio sync and solar and if you want it, there’s no reason not to get it.

I already have a watch similar to the Casio Edifice, so I want something a little bit different. I see what you mean by the gold and steel, but my dad has a watch with a simulator motif and I always liked it. Personally I like the Seiko Coutura SSC560 because I think the black face clashes with the gold and steel, but it only has LumiBrite hands, while the SSG010 has it on both the hands and markers.

When I laid eyes on it first, I felt like it was a bit too much of a shiny turqouise, but in normal light it is indeed mainly navy with some lighter accents, which I’m happy with.

Btw the lume is certainly a different story from the 62mas, which has very strong C3 green that can almost be used as a flashlight.
The blue BGW 9 on this is more muted and the indicies are also more narrow.
I’ve never had a watch with blue lume before, so I don’t know if this is just standard. It’s still perfectly legible in the dark and I’m also not so crazy about how the C3 makes the indicies green in daylight, so on balance it’s fine with me.

Yes, I love the crosshair a lot, much more than the Damasko variant. And the movement, although I’ve never owned a co-axial, but disregarding the /wt/ hater, it seems pretty incredible for the price compared to what you get from other makers in the same price range.
Sounds like a cool, practical collection overall. I’m glad to register that you seem happy and content with it!

It’s pretty boring, but I like pretty boring so it gets a thumbs up from me.
