You should be happy you have the freedom to wear anything you want without the same social stigma as in the past. We are finally approaching a results oriented approach to everything instead of dated dress code standards established in the last century. Casual attire is becoming more prevalent as the pretense of "dress for success" doesn't have the same value as 50 years ago.
There is almost no more firm handshake boomer culture and its being replaced with the attitude of "Can you get it done?" In the early 2010s I had dress in standard financefag attire almost daily, it served no purpose in terms of the quality of my work and realistically impeded my comfort level to a point where I grew to resent the job itself.
Its all about whether you will fall in line with the status quo.

When you wear a nice bespoke suit, or even a clean shirt and trousers to work it distinguishes you from everybody else who are dressed casually. It makes you feel and think a certain way knowing that you're in a position where there are standards in how you should be presenting yourself, even if that is extremely internal and nobody is going to see you outside of the business.

If you've ever worked at a hotel or some kind of high-end establishment it's always a weird feeling (for me at least) when you go to the back end and it's a shithole that is NOTHING like what the front end of the hotel is and what they present. It makes it feel like a complete and utter sham.

To me, wearing formal attire to the office is vaguely similar. It's like, sure, nobody is seeing what we're doing and it holds ZERO bearing on our customers/clients but we're still going to make an effort to present ourselves in the absolute best possible way because that's who we are. We make an effort to do that despite it being pointless.

This is kind of the problem with the modern world. There's no more pomp and circumstance. We used to (generally speaking) do pointless things that held little to no utility just because. Look at the intricate details and inscriptions on important government buildings for example, obviously made it far more work and effort but we did it because it looked nice. Now we build 4 walls and a roof in the cheapest way possible and that's that.

News flash: 99% of people dress like shit. Look at any Buzzfeed office or whatever the fuck, they wear the same zip up hoodie, graphic tee and dirty sneakers day in day out. It's lazy, it's pathetic and it's fucking onions numale lame shit.

Uniqlo has good affordable basics to start a wardrobe with.
Buy some chinos and casual shirts. Go with neutral or natural colors like brown/beige/khaki, olive, navy, grey, etc.
Shoes are very important. I'd recommend starting with brown leather shoes, where you can go with either dressy shoes or work boots depending on your preference.
For dressy shoes, Meermin is the least expensive. For work shoes, I'd recommend Red Wing heritage boots (either Iron Ranger or Classic Moc). You definitely want rubber soles for this season unless it barely ever rains/snows where you live.
