It's probably because design consists of a lot showing off how far you can push offbeat and novel ideas in clever way. Perhaps there's also an inclination toward shirking construction regulations if possible as a result.

Does anyone else feel like most pics itt aren't even designs? They look like random unremarkable rooms you'd see anywhere. Some exceptions like >>15547648, >>15548067, >>15548494, >>15549112 but the majority of the thread is "here's a room dotted with items randomly chosen from an ikea catalog". Forget trying to find one and maybe getting lucky, best bet would be to make one. I'm thinking sacrifice some vintage kitchen tables to harvest the awesome period formica. The only difficult part would be the upright wood sections, but a stand could made more simply like pic related.

It's honestly just ugly and harsh on the eyes with its lack of purpose and form. The conversation pit and dining area are both talking areas; they really don't go next to each other. There aren't any cooking surfaces near the dining area either. Even from the other side, the conversation pit doesn't have any points of stimulation outside of that dinky display in the center.
The cement ceiling is both disappointing and ugly. Disappointing because it could have been a splash of accent on the room with its eye catching curve, but the gray on white leads the eye nowhere.

I think you need to sort of accept that quality furniture isnt cheap, but like others have said, furniture is a pretty long term investment compared to something like clothes or electronics. You're much better off if you go into with a concept of how you would like your space to look, take your time in finding pieces you actually like, and saving up if necessary.

I would personally avoid ikea, wayfair, overstock etc. Its all ugly and cheap. A better place to start would be places like Design Within Reach, Room and Board, Crate&Barrel/CB2, west elm, Restoration Hardware. If youre into vintage you could check out 1stDibs but it gets pretty pricey.

You can find a range of prices and styles from these places from entry level to more high end.

One thing I like about design within reach is it always list the brand/designer - so if you like the style of something you find there you explore more thats similar.

Of course you can find more interesting pieces from individual designers or more boutique style shops, but I'd start there.

Moving in with the gf, deciding on what sorts of furniture, cushions, carpets, utensils, ornaments, antiques and decor we should have for the apartment. We both like the idea of the place being very busy, very maximalist, with a lot of stuff going on.
Personally, these are my 5 favourite aesthetics for room decor, these are my inspos. I'm wondering how I could incorporate these visual themes into one cohesive look that works together.
