The first two things I would do is get a screen to cover the water heater, and get some low light plants in terracotta pots.I would Basically treat the basement as if it was a brutalist apartment. If you don't have any interesting furniture then go onto Craigslist and look around for some interesting stuff, often times you can get cool shit for super cheap. I would also recommend getting a thin rug, dark red and dark green would probably look the best with the concrete.

Recently tried using a 50cm coffee table with a towel propping up my laptop. I sit cross-legged on a cushion in front of it and type with my elbows floating just above my knees. My wrists are straight and the screen is at horizon level, so I don't bend my neck.
