What’s your favourite fragrance that is typically thought of as “bad” or looked down upon by snobs?

For me it’s Ultra Male. I generally go for barbershop fragrances, Rose, Oud and bright citrus. But something about Ultra Male just does it for me, although the opening is a bit much when it settles down I love it. I feel like somebody is about to take me on a journey...

You are correct.

Let me take you on a journey, friend. You’re on vacation in San Francisco, you return to your hotel but have forgotten your room number. You walk into the room of another guest by mistake. Immediately upon entering, you notice that a bunch of sweaty men are fucking on a bed shaped like a giant martini glass covered with sequins. YMCA is playing on a loop on the room’s sound system, a disco ball hangs from the ceiling, a large TV displays episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race. John Waters is sitting on a chair in the corner sipping a cosmopolitan.

Ultra Male is gayer than that room.

My decant of Un Jardin Sur Le Nil leaked everywhere. It smells amazing but it attracted and killed like 30 bugs (installed the air conditioner yesterday and a bunch of flies etc got in while the screen was out of the window.

So apparently if you have a fruit fly problem, use this as bait. And do not wear this shit in the woods unless you want to get rekt by skeeters

>> No.15313156

>>15313098
If anyone wants cheaper bait, I just got rid of my fruit fly problem with my classic self-made mixture. Usually I take a jar and put in honey or syrup, some warm water to make it more liquid, some white vinegar to attract more flies, and then a tiny bit of dish soap to remove the surface tension. The flies love it and they all go into it and drown

Might start spraying some UJSLN in there too!!

>> No.15313171

>>15313156
For fruit flies, best thing to use is apple cider vinegar or red wine vinegar because they’re attracted to fermenting fruit. A few drops of dish soap in the vinegar, works like magic. Turns out you actually catch more flies with vinegar than with honey.

>> No.15313252

>>15313244
Ah, yeah, that should work. I like to put my vinegar/soap mixture in a jar, put a little piece of plastic wrap over the top, and poke some holes in it. That way, the flies go through the holes to get into the jar, but they have a hard time getting out. If they don’t drown, they just get trapped in the jar and eventually die.

At the risk of parroting him, it really is a powerful fragrance. It’s not as loud as Tobacco Vanille or Tuscan Leather but it’s quietly assertive. I tried so much for the summer, from several Aqua di Parmas and even Eau Sauvage which I love. I blind bought Eau de Cartier too, thinking it would finally dethrone Bright Neroli as my favorite summer scent. Since the corona has started I been posting here a bit too much. Like 30 posts or so a thread because I was stuck at home working so checking up on the thread now and then was tempting. Now that I moved I got quite a lot of things going here. Family, going back to the gym as my hand has healed enough to hit back steel and a new girl. But secondly I feel that because of the sheer volume of my contribution over last couple months this thread has been influenced a bit too heavily with my preferences and I see now people repeating different things after me because they perhaps thought that it's some kind of consensus in these threads. I've been posting here for years and always try to talk only about frags that really excite me but maybe it was a bit too much recently and that's also where I think all of the derailing and shitposting stems from. It was me who has brought up recently Sartorial, Azemour and FdB NYI as a great alternative to Jubi (Nicolai NYI, ESP and Chypre Palatin long time ago, too). I still think that these are excellent frags but they kinda started living their own life in these threads and some people naturally started revolting against their status here. It was always contrarianism that's been making /frag/ a great place, so hopefully it'll be even better once I come back after the break. Cutting yourself from reading and watching videos about fragrances gives also some mental space to enjoy what you have more, and in recent weeks I been testing sometimes like 3 new fragrance samples a day and stopped really enjoying them, so now I'm gonna focus on what I have and going through all my samples and decants slowly.
>>15315067
There's a difference. I think the Vetiver flanker is the best from the line and most youthful. Versace PH is a completely different fragrance. Way more generic but probably the general populace finds it more apt for younger guys than TdH line.

Fair enough. Didn’t think of it that way, I can see what you’re saying. People started liking CP (myself included), and now whenever you post about it, you get some dipshit spamming soijacks and generally being a nuisance. Contrarianism can be good, I suppose, when it causes people to look deeper than the shallow, popular designer offerings, but people here tend to take things too far and reject anything that’s popular regardless of quality. Too many sheep here who will just jump on any bandwagon. A great scent gets too popular? Some jackass starts going after it just to seem cool and then everyone jumps on board. It’s kinda pathetic, honestly. Have your own fucking opinions, dumb-dumbs.

ok so I got a few samples, just saying what I think so don't kill me
in no particular order

1. escentric 05 - fresh and piney with some citrus. smells slightly synthetic in the drydown, like it

2. nio - fresh tart citrus. pretty straightforward and linear, like it

3. de profundis - straight forward floral. so realistic it doesn't smell like a perfume at all, if that makes sense. literally smells like putting your nose to a fresh, wet chrysanth. very nice and pretty

4. 1861 renaissance - fresh minty citrus. minty nio

5. odeur 71 - synthetic sickly sweet smell with some metallic notes. not that bad

6. uden - slightly sweet citrus. kind of veers into lemon multisurface cleaner for me, but it's not bad

7. bojnokopff - this is really terrible. you get a bit of chocolate gourmand in the opening, but that quickly fades into this weird stinky oud medicinal chemical odor. a shame because it has a nice bottle

8. naxos 1861 - sweet smooth honey tobacco. this really smells nice, couldn't stop sniffing my wrist. becomes more smoky in the drydown but maintains a good amount of sweetness. never cloying despite how sweet it is, very easy to like

9. fumerie turque - somewhat similar to naxos in terms of prominent notes but a lot less sweet. more tobacco

10. 20 Mars 2022 - looks how it smells, extremely dark. smells deeply smoky but has a touch of fruity sweetness like a strong, dark rum cake. also has a strong synthetic smell

11. copper - opening is metallic but quickly mellows out into some kind of floral earthy scent

12. ma nishtana - spiced incense. doesn't smell particularly smoky or complex to me, but it's ok

13. coup de foudre edp - very beautiful sweet orange citrus floral. extremely realistic floral like de profundis but so complex and well blended it's difficult to pick out individual notes. extremely small amount of inoffensive sweet oud in the background for depth. becomes more woody and less floral in the drydown but stays somewhat sweet. so good

>> No.15317381

>>15317315
cont.
14. mefisto - fresh clean lavender citrus barbershop. smells really nice, also somehow comes off somewhat aquatic. very good

15. triad - rose/oud combo. good if you like oud, the rose is sickly sweet and never drops in intensity so it stays matched with oud all the way down

16. vetiver nocturne absolu - very green mossy earthy vetiver with some oud. not bad

17. ceylon - extremely sweet cloying candied honey scent with a small amount of oud. not my favorite

18. new york intense - fresh mostly oakmoss some lavender. not bad.

the rest I either don't really care for or I just haven't had enough time with them. the comme des garçon stuff was the most disappointing because I expected something a lot more interesting. favorites are probably mefisto, naxos, de profundis, and coup de foudre eau de parfum

Couple of new samples in today's post.

>Xerjoff - Mefisto Gentiluomo
Upgraded SMW with better longevity, slightly inferior projecetion. Much smoother and well rounded than newer batches of SMW, like it a lot but not really anything I'm likely to buy for the pricetag. 8/10

>Frederic Malle - Musc Ravageur
Unique, strange scent, can't really put my finger on what actually stands out. Reminds me a little of the dark spices in Evody Noir d'Orient but much lighter and smoother than that. Spices, vanilla and musk but nothing stands out above each other and while it initially smells like something I don't like I still keep sniffing my wrists, it's a strange one. 6.5/10

>Intio - Oud for Greatness
Rich oud tempered with lavender and light spices. Like the opening a lot but then the drydown seems a lot less interesting the further it gets. 7/10

>MFK Oud Silk Mood
Really smooth rose oud, tried a lot of rose/oud scents but this is one of the best I've found to date. Prefer the opening to the darker dry down but this is really good overall and with good projection/longevity well. 8.5/10

Interesting about your take on Ma Nishtana. I get tons of smoke, personally. If anything, I get very little spice and almost all resins and smoke. To me, it’s the best pure incense scent out there. I just got my bottle last week and I’ve been wearing it nonstop.

Always interesting to me how wildly different two people’s perceptions of the same scent can be.

How is Me Burberry Indigo?
I'm really on a hunt for a minty frag that's not too expensive as not to be a daily driver for work but something that isn't mediocre like Kryptomint. Sounds like it'd fit the bill. I've won a fiver betting a lot yesterday so I'll wait until Monday, check my william hill and see what other profit I may have made. The £5 I won outright will pay for a 3ml sample at the least, I'd imagine.

I just felt it was the typical A* Men patchouli drydown with a bit of mint chocolate as the overall accord. Plus that bottle, ugliest one of the lot with its bright green. It could be the nicest smelling frag in the world and I'd still never own a full bottle of the stuff.
I haven't tried any other mint heavy scents yet, but I loved the mint I got in the drydown of BDC EDP.

I went to Lush cause I wanted to try V but apparently I have to go to a bigger store to find it. I tried a bunch of stuff though, there was something that smelled just like a fizzy cola, it was very cool but not something i would wear. What Would Love Do? was also very nice but I'm thinking its cause of the lavender. I'm thinking lavender, alongside violet, is one of those notes that makes me fall for a perfume time and time again. But anyway most of these were too sweet and its really annoying cause they didn't have to be sweet. I hate it for desserts and now that I'm into frags I hate it for this as well. Even what would love do was sweet which is why I wasn't totally into it even thought it was really cheap.

Lush has some very interesting stuff. Sarah McCartney used to work for them. Breath of God is must-try, though won’t be for everyone. Smells like if someone threw a melon and a pack of mint gum on a bonfire. Karma’s pretty neat too, though I think it smells like corn tortillas. Sun is also cool, basically smells like super realistic orange. Like, if you sliced an orange on a wood cutting board, that is 100% what Sun smells like.

I also own Superworld Unknown and it’s pretty cool. Kind of smells like a sweet, sticky gourmand layered over Creed Royal Oud. Very interesting stuff, not something I wear a lot, but it’s fun.

Their black-label scents are only available online and at a few flagship stores worldwide, so they’re not that easy to sample.

On the concept of music theory and all, since I learned to play guitar albeit basically, my dad and I always butt heads over bands like Foo Fighters and Status Quo being simplistic because its the same 3 or 4 chords played over with little variation in the track.

That was cool and the more challenging thing I tried but I focused a lot on the mint and couldnt get past it. Maybe it was something else I tried I dunno. I saw Karma and the description of 60s London seemed cool but I didn't try it. Apparently the Queen Victoria Building store is a flagship store, I'll pop in if I'm ever in the city and I'll try to remember these. The pricing was also weird, it was 60AUD to 140 for 100ml bottles but I didn't understand why. They all seemed of similar quality.
