Are razor bumps and razor burn the only risk of shaving against the grain?
I've always gone with the grain just because that's what people say you should do but when I used to go against it was definitely a closer shave and I never noticed any problems as a result.

I always go against the grain because I literally don’t know how to shave properly.
When I shave with the grain nothing fucking happens. The razor doesn’t cut jack shit. So I move the razor and start shaving at all possible 11 dimensions and angles.

These guys are correct. Edwin Jagger is also a great brand. I prefer a three-piece razor over a butterfly style. Whatever you get try out some different brands of blades, I like Astra super platinum. It'll be the best shave of your life and you'll save tons of money on blades in the long run.

Oh, don't worry about it mate. It honestly happens to everyone. It takes a while for your skin to get used to it. The best advice I can give you is to shave at night, only twice or 3 times a week, make sure to use an astringent aftershave and moisturise after. Make sure to soap up a lot, so that your hair is as brittle and unprotected as possible. Shave only with the grain until you are really used to it. You can do 2 passes if you want, but build up to more and against the grain.

I also personally found that using a straight razor helped my skin a ton. It does take longer to shave with though.

I just have a hot shower and use my foil shaver everyday or 2nd, clean and no razor rash/bumps.

100% this. I know double edged razors are hated on this board and deemed a reddit thing, but they absolutely work.
Also use shaving soap. The hotness and wetness of the shaving brush really softens up the hair and makes your pores open more. Also use aftershave with little or no alcohol, as it dries out the skin and makes you look older.

Have you tried doing a pass with the grain beforehand? Here's what I do:
1. Wet face with lukewarm water
2. Apply shaving cream
3. Use a disposable razor (the kind with lubricating strips are good)
4. (Tuck your head in like you're trying to give yourself a double chin so you can get as much area as possible)
5. One pass with the grain (leave the lower neck alone for now)
6. Second pass against the grain
7. Shave the neck with don't look up to stretch the skin as this always gives me bumps, just keep your face tucked under and be gentle

Other tips: I don't recommend shaving the upper lip against the grain, a couple passes with the grain looks just as clean even if it's not as smooth. Remember to feel the way your hair grows on the neck as these hairs may grow in a different direction than your facial hairs. For me, against the grain is sideways instead of going up.

That tends to cause irritation/razor burn, which op's pic has a shit ton of. The correct answer is to shave with multiple passes at different angles with a very sharp edge. Typically the first shave pass is with the grain of your beard, the second across the grain, and the third either across the grain going the other direction, or against the grain.

>> No.15305009

>>15300979
safety razor. first pass you go with the grain. second pass you go sideways. third pass you go against the grain (you'll be shaving upwards towards your ears and nose)

I do this sometimes, it takes under an hour to do three passes - but my stubble is just going to grow within 24hours anyway so usually it doesn't matter.
