I got both a vintage bottle with no sprayer and the new one from 2019. There is definitely a huge difference between them. Vintage is full of castoreum and oakmoss and, even though they do smell similar, the new one is much softer and classier. I adore both of them but for different settings

I disagree. I've been to their boutique next to Champs-Elysees and smelled 20+ of frags and some were synthetic some were not. I think the fact that some of their best sellers are quite synthetic makes people believe that all of them are like that. Asolutely based. You should've posted here about it, there's at least two of us interested in indie attar makers here. Did you try any other houses? Ensar Oud, Mellifluence, Rising Phoenix and Elixir Attar are also on my radar for some time together with Sultan Pasha. Apparently they're supposed to be many levels above Abdul Karim Al Faransi whose Oud Cuiré (and Musk Aswad, Sheikh Al Faransi, Mukhallat di Corleone to lesser extent) left me absolutely speechless already. I'm a nichefag but never smelled anything quite like Oud Cuire, so I'm really looking forward to testing the other better houses. However, I'm new to it all so perhaps I should take it easy and develop my nose first slowly hence I ordered these single ingredients absolutes from Mellifluence.

Damn, I haven't seen that otherwise I'd order these with my absolutes too. Try samples from AKAF. Most of his stuff has pages on fragrantica, so it helps. And he's way cheaper than Pasha/Mellifluence (from what I read on some forums for attar niche fags he uses lower grade ingredients and synthetics) but still mindblowing for my newb nose. It were Wafts who made me look into attars too (and especially Oud Cuire that they praise in one of their videos). Kinda cool that they also just started to get into this space but are one step in front of us, so we can get some newbie guidance from them.

So yesterday on the walk I've seen irises blooming outside someone house and I took a sniff. I expected powdery profile known from Dior Homme etc but instead I couldn't smell anything. I did some research and apparently that's correct. Iris flowers have almost no smell and iris as known as a note comes rather from the iris' roots called orris. It confused me even more because on fragrantica you clearly see a distinction between iris and orris root. What do perfumers mean then by 'iris (flower) note'? Just the general 'flowery-powedery' vibe?

Can you expand on your point? I recently had this reflection that the only valuable things about fragrantica for me is the fact that I'm used to their clean interface and that people can vote on the most prominent notes that helps a lot to understand what you smell. Other than that it's pretty crap. Most of the reviews are not worth reading and the comment section is very prone to becoming an echo chamber. Especially with their system where downvoted enough comments are being deleted. Forums on fragrantica always seemed to me like a mix of men asking for compliment getters and boomer women who are a bit more knowledgeable but eventually talk about womens perfumes mostly. How is it on basenotes? Are the forums way better? Do you find the interface superior and more handy once one gets used to it? Is the database of fragrances bigger than on fragrantica (I very often couldn't find any entries for more niche stuff)? Would actually genuinely appreciate your thoughts as I was thinking of moving to basenotes from fragrantica.

>>15230714
>[...] This is a man padding about at home, for there is an air of post-shower relaxation and the tinkling of vermouth and ice in a glass, rather than a rushed morning routine. Gruau’s illustrations of a metropolitan man, perhaps attached, perhaps a bachelor, perfectly encapsulated the scent of Eau Sauvage. Formulated by the minimalist perfumer Edmond Roudnitska, it was a clever twist on the eau de cologne: a mossy citrus splash lifted through the use of a molecule present in jasmine flowers called Hedione (or methyl dihydrojasmonate), which illuminated the composition to brilliance. Eau Sauvage is secure in its own skin; it knows it’s got the A game but doesn’t need to go on about it. Strangely, unlike many female scents from earlier in the twentieth century, which quickly become ‘old’, Eau Sauvage has been worn now by three generations without ever seeming past it or too ‘dad-like’; many men whose fathers wore this scent have no qualms about inheriting it for themselves.

>> No.15230766

>>15230765
>The seeming effortlessness of Roudnitska and Gruau’s work here belies the social changes that made it possible. Selling scent to men had, as we have seen, hitherto relied on a few laboured persuasion techniques. Gruau got rid of all of this – the endless marketing copy, the adoring wife pecking her husband on the cheek, the cheesy slogans – and showed a man, usually alone, in his element. Eau Sauvage tells little but implies much. As a snapshot of social history he is a pertinent figure. In her account of post-war masculinity, ‘Playboy’ and the Making of the Good Life in Modern America, historian Elizabeth Fraterrigo charts the role played by Hugh Hefner’s empire, from his magazine to his clubs and penthouses, in presenting young, affluent men with an alternative way to live, one ultimately built on extending the years of ‘freedom’ prior to marriage. Rather than paying off that new-build suburban home and having the old ball-and-chain nagging at you all hours of the day, this was about pleasure-seeking, in and out of the bedroom. And no self-respecting playboy could truly express his tastes and impress his latest squeeze if he didn’t have his own luxurious bachelor pad filled with abstract art, jazz records and up-to-date hi-fi equipment. Away from the entertaining space, the bathroom was of supreme importance, reclaimed as a manly grooming lair. One of Playboy’s lifestyle features, ‘The Man in his Bath’ from 1957, emphasised the need for titanic, plush bath towels (reminiscent of those large red and black boxes of Kleenex for Men tissues) and the all-important voluminous terry robe, to don when emerging from a long soak in an oversized tub.
>The Eau Sauvage man is more than a Hefneresque cliché, however. He probably gets all the girls anyway, but that’s not why he loves the scent. He wears it for himself, out of the social limelight, and enjoys nothing more than an evening pottering about in his sheepskin slippers

Also this review makes me so angry at these frog eaters that my bottle is still not with me.
>Azemour Les Orangers is a fresh chypre, a real, honest-to-goodness fresh chypre, with plenty of citrus and that mossy, nearly-musty undertone that you either adore or detest. If, like me, you adore it, then Azemour will be like greeting an old friend that you haven't seen in some time and feared you might never meet again. The opening is juicy but dry: lots of bright, orange-y citrus with green undertones and plenty of peppery spice (notes include orange, grapefruit, mandarin, citron, coriander, cumin, black pepper, pink pepper, cassis, galbanum, neroli, geranium, orange blossom, rose, hay, moss, henna and iodine). It's almost fizzy in the first few minutes — it seems to dance and sparkle on the skin as it warms. It has, briefly, an almost-sweaty aspect that I also find in fragrances like Annick Goutal Eau du Sud and Frédéric Malle Cologne Bigarade; in this case, it is probably the combination of cumin and grapefruit, although I don't think cumin-o-phobes will find that note overdone. The base is a hot summer's day in a dry climate near the sea (Morocco will do, but I thought right away of my much-missed Southern California): dried grasses, the faint scent of orange blossom carried on salty air.
>It's summer-y, but has enough depth and bite that I enjoy it (immensely) even in the cold, and the lasting power is surprisingly good. Glorious, possibly my favorite niche fragrance of 2011 and going straight onto my "buy" list.

Ok Fieroanon here. Just went out specifically to test Eau Sauvage since I hadn't smelled it in a really long time.

Basically, there's nothing to compare here. I smelled fresh geranium for an hour and a half. I don't know if it's actually geranium but it strongly reminded me of the flowers on my grandma's balcony. Now it's faint, and I get some musk, maybe? As far as citruses go there's not really anything.

I have no doubt that the vintage Eau Sauvage is a tremendous frag. But this version is neutered. Like a handsome man who's been vicked and turned into a squeaking little gerbil by his marriage.

SOTD is Eau Sauvage Parfum 2017 btw. Get this one, it's fucking great.

SOTD: MFK Aqua Celestia Forte. Very competent petitgrain-citrus fragrance with a clever 'white' hedione twist making it a very transparent, crystal compositon. The opening is full of uplifting youthful mint that slowly vanishes as the scent ages into quiet and more distinguished floral-hedione-musky territories. Thankfully citruses linger somewhere throughout all phases, so it doesn't become just another soapy laundry musk. Good stuff overall but it lasts only for 3 hours on my skin. As always with those few MFKs that I like, I would consider buying it but not for this price. What are you wearing today lads?
