Are there any mid-prized (aka shitters) watches you can get good, custom printed dials for?
Like the classic modder watches, amphibia, various seikos, maybe some chink diver homages?
Of course I can get custom print watches of aliexpress (some anon found some "nice" one like two threads back), but they're <$20 quartz shitters. I'm looking at the $50 to $500 price range.
I'd love to have a Vostok Amphibia with a dial like pic related!

Thinking about getting an Orient Ray 2, seems like a good entry level diver. I just love the look of watches like the Submariner, Seamaster or Black Bay so the design is right up my alley.

I am just undecided if I want to get the regular one or the blacked out version (Raven). The regular version seems more classy but the Raven looks pretty neat on Nato straps.

Is it a good watch overall ? Any alternatives I should look at ? I am aware of the Seiko SKX

So I'd essentially need something were I can download some .psd (or preferably, .xcf, since we're on /g/) template with where it'll be covered by minute markers or the date window and such, send it to them, and they print just whatever this file contains in a high dpi way that will not immidiately get bleached by a day in the sun.
does that exist?

Simple question but one I don't ever see discussed:

Do mechanical watches tend to get faster or slower over time? Like do most watches coming in for a service run too fast or too slow?

I usually see people prefer their watch to run just a tiny bit fast, ~+4, but I'm not sure if it's because they tend to slow down over time or just because it's easier to set a fast watch provided it has hacking seconds.

My first thought was that as lubricants dry out and the arbors and jewels get worn, friction will increase causing slowdown. But then I realized friction will decrease balance amplitude and actually make the watch speed up.

So which is it?

San Martin has a customization service where you can get custom text on the dial and custom laser engraving on the caseback. I think you can get logos on the dial but I'm not sure if you can do a full image print. They make pretty decent stuff quality wise, lots of clones of older Seiko dive watches.

They're generally automatic but it uses a Quartz crystal like a digital watch. However, there is no battery. Think about it like the alternator of a car, the mechanical movement of the watch creates enough energy to oscillate the crystal. This is what makes the movement so smooth, it's regulated by quartz but it is still a mechanical movement.

Personally, I love the ever-popular Snowflake, and their GMT is very clean looking, but recently I found out there is a Godzilla special edition that just looks really cool to me.

There are plenty that do have a date window, to me a date window is fine but GS seems to really be dedicated to making elegant watches that aren't cluttered. Some people also don't like the Spring Drive indicator for just that reason, but there are a ton of models that have different levels of complication.

I saw king and assumed you meant vintage seiko kings, not grand seiko. Grand seiko doesn't use kanji date wheels these days.
GS sort of follows an old idea Seiko had for grammar of design, which basically just means make it shiny. If you see one in person the hands and case just gleam in a way you might not see in other watches. It's a way to catch the eye without being fuckhuge or brightly colored. Breitling tries to do something similar. But it's just for the case, and without the angles so it's not the same.

I still think they are leaving tons of money on the table by Never doing 1 to 1 vintage reissues. They always have to fuck around with them and make them bigger. Sure larger watches are the trend right now, but if the vintage ones are selling there has to be some demand there. Im fine with them switching to sapphire or improving the water resistance, but they always have to much about with other details and mess everything up. Seiko did a reissue of the 62 mas that was almost 1 to 1 but then only made 2000 of them and they cost like 4 grand, then they released this horrible upsized monstrosity for $700 and they aren't popular at all.

Yeah I agree with this 100%, and I think this is part of the reason why Rolex is so successful, given that their designs haven't changed much over so many years. Omega has recently started doing reissues or reimaginings in the case of the Globemaster so I think they're on the right track.

Another part of the issue though is the lack of capability to source parts for in house movements. A lot of watch brands used to do in house movements but no longer have the capacity to do so, and that limits their ability to remake some of their back catalogue.

The originals were 33mm (!) and almost noone does a marine deck watch with arabic numerals, railroad track and blued spade hands in reasonable sizes.
Everybody else makes one or more of the following mishaps: large case, thicc, non-blued hands, shitty typeface, meme dial and exorbitant pricing (Longines), small seconds, all in all, more true to the deck watches, than the RAF Omega/Longines pilots.

I think the latter is still the majority of the Rolex and luxury watch market so we’ll continue seeing oversized watches for a while.

The watch industry always takes at least a decade before adjusting to the market. They push out new and exclusive shit noone asked for, while people dig deeper in the vintage sections. The most prominent issue with re-issues is the increased size (be it case and/or font), and consequently fucked proportions, which no longer work. Just look at Longines. The largest watch in my collection is a type-a flieger at 43mm that looks -just- right. Even 40mm watches look odd if they are too thick.

See also: AL&S compared to Audemars Piguet.
When Audemars Piguet released the Odysseus it got a cold reception for a clunky bracelet and divisive dial. They immediately got to work to offer a leather and rubber strap option and added new texturing to the dial as well as offering the watch in white gold to increase the value.
Meanwhile when AP's new watch, the Code 11 or whatever it's called, got a similarly tepid reaction their response was to just tell you you had shit taste if you don't like it.

There's actually many, though less severe, stories of people getting the worst customer service from him where he just assumes they broke his watches and starts yelling at them. Because the watch community is filled with cucks and that guy is also a cuck who, rather than getting angry, just got scared and wanted it all to go away. Most people don't want trouble. if you don't care about scuffs it's fine. and to be honest I don't even hate negative displays that much, it's mostly memeing and I think they can look cool. but personally, I think watches like that are just too much black and you get sick of all the black after a while. a little pop of color adds a lot of personality. in a few years consider getting one of those chinese bezel/bracelet combos off aliexpress and then it'll be like you have a whole new watch with the negative display really looking nice in a silver case or something.

it looks busy and not in a good way. looks very generic and cheap, I'd rather just get a regular field watch from Citizen or Victorinox for the same or similar money but cleaner aesthetics and more confidence. advertising sapphire on the dial just seems a bit desperate.

Thanks, so I imagine they should be better than Chink replacement bracelets then?

I want that exact watch but without Bluetooth so I have to improvise.

I mean, you can disable the Bluetooth. It still has mb6. If it’s a cost issue then just get a 5610 and mod it. Throw a combi bracelet on that shit as well

That’s not a bad idea anon. Thanks for the input. I dress very plain and autismo. Almost afraid of trying out different colors sometimes. Good compromise you suggested.

How much should I pay for a Hi-beat seiko from the 70's? There are some bids on Ebay going for 600+

Love the Kanji wheel, why don't they make it like that anymore? Doesn't Seiko pander to Japs?

Did you guys know a WOMAN invented the wrist watch? Well, kind of. Breguet actually made it but it was at the request of the Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples, in 1810. The last trace of the watch itself was when it was brought in for repairs in 1855. Nobody knows where it is now.
