Here is the sinn EZM 2B. It's got a temperature compensated quartz movement. The thing can withstand depths way beyond anything you could actually survive diving at (at least 500 bar yes 500) it has an oil filled case so there is zero light refraction or any reflection under water and the dial remains perfectly readable at basically any angle plus it has all the other things that come along with autistic German over engineering.
It is a purpose made tool for telling time when diving.

A 10 dollar casio, because a tool watch should go through hell if you have anything approaching a manly hobby.

You want a watch you can keep on when you're cleaning out a garbage disposal, and then drop into a bath of spirits to get the bigger chunks of gunk off. You don't want some overpriced turd that you'll start crying over if it gets one little scratch.

The rangeman, especially the new one, is absolutely better for going innawoods and other things on dry land. when you have hundreds of millions of dollars, $20,000 for a rolex is mere pittance and will not be flashy enough on the wrist. They are looking for toys, something funky, showy and trendy to show off to their other rich friends.

To be fair to those watches, many are actually very highly complicated and impressively engineered. Their price point is not an issue to the clientele they are courting.

for example this jacob and co. has a floating double axis tourbillon (the 3rd axis being its cage) a 288 faceted diamond sphere for the moon and a lacquered magnesium globe for the earth. Each of those two spins on their own axis, and the whole thing, arms and all, rotates around the dial every 10 mins. It also comes with a fully working roulette wheel underneath and a tiny ball that actually jumps around. The asking price is $600,000.

>> No.15177822

idk, a good watch is a good watch. Homages give an opportunity for regular people to test drive the look of a luxury watch without sinking the amount of money needed for one. Maybe the watch wouldnt suit you in reality. Or maybe you just want a fashion accessory that you wouldnt cry over if you dropped it on a tiled floor and chipped something.

as long as its upfront about being a homage and doesnt pretend its actually a real rolex/omega/tudor im personally fine with it. homage =/ = fake

Also, if you're going to be wearing a compass, be sure to confirm that it works every week or so. Those things can go out of whack permanently due to strong magnets and such, which aren't uncommon these days.

There's nothing average in buying a $10k watch retard. If you think someone who can afford that isn't rich you're delusional. That's more than the average yearly salary in my country.

>> No.15178305

in many countries a rolex is well within reach of the average joe, they just have to save for a few months or half a year/ a year for it. Many do get one to show off and for ego, but then realise they actually cannot afford the upkeep. And there are those who just put everything on their credit card and spend well above their means.

$10,000 is a lot of money but its not astronomical. The starting monthly salary in my country is already $3000.

Yes. If your dial is just black or white it makes it a lot more versatile, you can pair it with all kinds of wild straps in different materials or textures to freely alter the mood of it and go with whatever outfit.
If your dial is very distinct and colorful it will look garish on a loud strap so you have to go very restrained. A black dial watch, depending on the watch, can go well with nearly any strap.

well, just to add that even though it is unpopular nowadays, the "rule" about not mixing e.g. black shoes with a brown belt is a rule for a reason. whether or not you agree with it is ultimately subjective but I for one don't get how people in their right mind would ever knowingly mix a black dial with a brown strap. however, just below your post, on a fashion board no less, someone did it.

There are things wrong with the powermatic that aren't its unserviceability.

The free-sprung balance is nice, but also makes it hard to regulate.
The parts availability is far worse than ETA 28 movements.
The extended power reserve is nice but its not really a technical innovation; they just dropped the beat rate.
The low-jewel count versions have a plastic escapement which is embarrassing (the higher-jewel count ones do not).
Other than those points it's fine.
