If there was a homage that looked exactly like the original and had a good movement, would it really be worth going for the original?

Wouldn't it be the same as buying a fake? Like, you're trying to impress people only for the brand.

Will anything ever beat the F91w in terms of utility, weight, reliability and price?

Honestly the only drawback i can think of is the default wrist strap being a pinchy fucker that smells like gym shoes after a week.

F-91W's buttons are way too small for adult fingers. It also consumes batteries and is therefore inappropriate for the end of the world, should one develop. But for the price, yeah, economics of scale mean that F-91W will be the best that the least possible money can buy.

if you want to support the brand (especially smaller niche brands) then you should

but things like rolexes where they are priced so high theres more argument for it. And you KNOW they are swimming in money so.... fuck them, right? why buy a $12,000 rolex when a $60 Loreo gets you 90% there? and people passing you on the street will never know /care. But if its a smaller brand and I really like the design and company I would likely buy the real thing

But yeah I mean in the end watches are supposed to be luxury accessories so I guess it's understable if someone wanted to buy the brand to flex but unless it's rolex, like who are you going to flex it with? nobody knows anything else, are you supposed to flex it with yourself? or just start talking about how much your watch is worth? It's really luck of the draw with the f-91w some of them have pinched gaskets improperly installed case backs and other manufacturing issues. If you get lucky and get a good one, and maybe put some silicone grease on the gasket they are kind of water resistant. People really have taken them diving and had then hold up fine, bit I wouldn't bet on it.

Thanks brother. LF make absolutely stunning dress watches imo, the only issue is that they're 40mm. An ALS saxonia thin or a VC patrimony 36mm would be my next choice and more appropriately sized. Stowa antea KS, or Max bill if you really want a ''real'' bauhaus watches.Other bauhaus watches will be just homages and interpretations.

The Max Bill is nicer looking I think, and you can find it on several types, auto, handwinding and even quartz I think. The Stowa antea is a more refined watch, simpler, but it has nice blue hands, a good movement, and a cristal caseback to see it.
The max bill movement I think it's just a workhorse movement, nothing special, but reliable.

And both watches are small, the KS is 35mm and the max bill I think there are 34mm versions for handwinding movements.

They won't, I mean this is obviously being sold as a "premium" version. If you don't care about the STN screen or the DLC coated titanium, and are happy enough with a cheaply coated set that will get scuffed (or if you're really crazy you could get it all sandblasted off and get it coated with something decent instead), then you can just buy the titanium set off aliexpress for a hundred bucks or so.

Those squares are going to keep their price pretty well.

The thing with the sub (or GMT, or even the Explorer) is that they're SO aggressive and sporty that they just feel like an annoying James Bond larp whenever you see some banker wearing one.

Yes. You can think of an oil filled watch as basically looking like it has glass all the way down until the screen, there's no transition to air.

The problem is that some oils react with the rubber spacer in some digitals and destroy the fuck out of them, and also that you're lowering the shock resistance because air is compressible, but liquid isn't. If you manage to get your watch up to 60 degrees or so, you could pop the crystal out. It's also a massive hassle if you ever want to change the battery.

The Sinn watches actually have a back that moves in and out a mm or two based on the temperature of the watch to stop it cracking open.

CNC will never be impressive. I was interested to see how they attached the pistons, and then I laughed because they're just fucking clip-on. The whole thing legitimately looks like a child's toy, albeit some of that is due to the hideous plexiglass that won't be in the final version.

Maybe if you don't understand the first thing about a crank shaft, this kind of movement would seem impressive. But when you know how a crankshaft works, it's not even slightly impressive.

What's gonna happen to a watch in fire fights? Gets bumped around during manoeuvres, what? G-shocks should handle this easily, and if you have enough money left over, you can get a spare too.

No watch is gonna take a bullet for you. A richochet maybe, or a tiny bit of shrapnel, but that's less than e.g. a pocket bible will do. And just how evil are we talking about here, and what kind of lair? Plastic watches will melt in volcano-type lairs, see, and you can't expect a Soviet watch's lubricants to stay viscous under heat. Conversely a lair on the backside of the moon would indicate an Omega, because it's known to survive raygun blasts whizzing by. Be sure to colour-coördinate your strap to the shade of your space-camo moon boots.

I guess it really depends on the circumstances. I don't generally go for homage watches and can't really justify spending more than a grand on a watch so there really isn't much point to me in pretending to have a Rolex. In a sort of weird way a really good/accurate homage is kind of the worst of both worlds because you're attracting as many potential thieves and as much negative attention as if you were wearing the real thing but you don't get the benefit of actually having a Rolex. You have all the risk of wearing a high profile thief-bait watch except for the fact that you don't actually even have the watch they are trying to steal from you.

It's not only lying to the world around you it's lying to yourself. If you can't get a submariner/explorer you're a lot better off getting an homage that at least has some original design cues and only takes inspiration from the other watch instead of just doing this posing nonsense of trying to look like you have something you really don't.

What kind of evilness and lair are we talking about?
Generally, I’d second (or rather forth) the other anons G-shock suggestion, but to make sure that this one is really adequate, we need to know more!
For example electric fields or even EMP use! If you have to expect that Dr. Evil is going to use those, you need to go mechanic! For this reason, the Russian military is still issuing mechanical watches! Look up Vostok ratnik. They also come with a strap that has a fabric cover, so they won’t reflect light when you’re hiding or something, so those are a pretty good contender I’d say.
However, I do t know how antimagnetic they are. Does Dr. Evil like to play around with magnets? If so, you probably have to go beyond the standard magnetic resistance of your average watch and invest in an Milgauss or 15k Gauss.
But those don’t have any functions beyond telling the time, so if you need those, it’s getting complicated.
Oh, and is that lair under the sea? So we’d probably need more water resistant than average.
Really hard to find d the perfect watch!

I can't really speak for everyone but I know that as someone who got really interested in watches in the past two years all it really took was a couple trips to a real watch shop when I was in Europe. Where I am in America we don't really have watch shops beyond just box stores and mall tier jewelry stores that primarily sell Michael Kors et.al or if you're lucky Citizen/Bulova.

Spending a summer living in central Europe and getting to see actual watch shops in Austria and the Czech republic really opened me up to being more interested. While most people probably didn't have my exact experience I think it's just that mechanical watches are being more exposed to people through various ways that were not previously common. I'm not a vintage Rolex nerd but I see people with SKX's and Orients on campus all the time whereas 5 years ago you really didn't see many automatic watches around.
