>>15162083
>Fashion changes. Tattoos can not.
I'm not sure I buy that train of thought. Tattoos can be covered and modified and a lot of people who get tattoos don't mind altering or updating their tattoos.
Different styles of tattooing come in and out of fashion, much like different fits of clothing do. And tattoo technology updates, albeit perhaps more slowly than fashion fabrication technology, in a way that changes viable tattoo and tattoo adjacent techniques.

This topic of "permanence" has been covered in these threads before.

Well Ed Hardy's stuff probably looks cheesy because it's an application of a style outside of the medium that made that style what it is.

American traditional tattoos rely on bold, thick lines and flat colors because those are the tricks to making a tattoo legible over time. I can't speak to the subject matter, other than it probably just reflected what was popular with those particular artists at the time. I have a feeling that most of the imagery that emerged post-war was influenced by imagery that was relevant to men during the war (maritime themes, ladies painted on planes etc).

The quality of tattooing technologies has since improved, allowing for tattoos with thinner line-work or more pastel shades to be more light-fast and less susceptible to blurring or fading.

TL;DR my mom loves Ed Hardy

Amtrad looks the way it looks because it can be tattooed incredibly fast, back in the day only sailors got tattooed, so tattoo artists didnt have any work most of the week, but when a ship came they had 20+ people wanting to get a tattoo before the ship departed less than a day later, so they had to work really fast
Also, amtrad, together with japtrad, is the only tattoo style that will always look good and it will never go out of fashion, because the core designs remained unchanged for more than a hundred years. Everyone knows you got that tribal tat in the 90, and that geometric wolf in the early 2010s, but that trad panther will be the same forever

Your takes on amtrad are based. I think part of the reason the anti-tattoo crowd seethes so hard right now is because the current "trends" are actually pretty nice (we're seeing a huge revitalization of amtrad and japtrad, but with better equipment and artists than ever before) and so the usually valid "you'll regret following a trend that will die out" argument doesn't work here. I totally agree that the tribal/barbed wire crowd were a bunch of idiots. The geometric crowd is probably kicking themselves about now unless their work was particularly good. But right now the amtrad crowd is comfortable knowing that this is art that's stayed relevant and in-style since the early 1900s.

I think the problem with women and tattoos is that most of what's popular right now doesn't look good on women. Everyone's getting just black and white simple images, or pictures or whatever, tarot card style stuff, etc. I just think that style is way better on men than women, while women look much better with designs meant to accentuate the body, or abstract things that don't have any real purpose or shape when not fitted properly. I agree with your general argument but not with the specifics you've used. I think tribal is set to experience a little bit of a renaissance-- a lot of the older tribal tattooers (leo zulueta, eg) are aging out and retiring, and I think younger tattooers are going to take up at least part of those stylings, even if they're adapted to lean more blackwork. That being said, I've mostly only got amtrad and japtrad tattoos, and couldn't really see myself getting a borneo inspired tribal tat. i definitely get what you mean with this, though i'd say for example the chunky 90s tribal you see on dudes of a certain age is sufficiently divergent in style from your polynesian, burmese, whatever indigenous tattoo style. i've seen the phrase neo tribal thrown around sometimes but for me it's not yet completely distinct from geometric/ornamental style.

i don't mind trendiness, it's kind of inevitable that your tats will be indicative of which time period in your life you got them in, it's part of the life story your body tells. i know a lot of fellow millenial white men who fell in love with traditional japanese at the same sort of time, despite being a nigh timeless style i suspect that will get overdone enough to fall out of favour and look its own kind of dated. that's ok though because they look great either way
