From what I've seen these threads are mostly for middle class wannabes who went to state schools or non-Ivy privates. Not that there's anything wrong with that. If you're smart and successful in your own right it's no big challenge to bust into the upper middle waspy class (if you're white) by adopting the proper tastes. Clothes help you signal to people already there that you're one of them, even if you're not by birth. If you can pull it off, by the time your grandchildren are born everyone will forget the fact you went to public school.

I take inspiration from stuff posted here, particularly the fabrics but I don't dress full on /tip/, it wouldn't make sense for my life. I work in a semi-formal setting and it's nice to add some texture and interesting flourishes to my otherwise fairly standard /menswear/

youve really done me a solid there, been looking for one for ages and this came up when i searched gloverall for all of £16, so ofc I nabbed it. even if its not the best coat as long as its actually wearable (description says good condition only missing a button) im quite happy with it. its not my perfect coat i dont think, not too keen on the pockets, but at that price i think its at the very least one for the rack. would you say this was a reasonably decent purchase? ofc, if i get here and its all frayed up itll be going back.

There honestly isn't really this class anymore. There definitely are rich white people, but the idea of WASPyness is inherently tied to New England and NYC, and the people who are making the real fortunes these days live in Southern California and wear T-shirts. And their last name is usually Goldberg or Patel, not Smythe.

The old-money just isn't that much money anymore. There's still obvs a decent number of legacy admits to choice unis, but they are overwhelmed by the vast number of non-legacy admits. And in a generation, schools will stop doing legacy admits altogether.

Why would anybody want to LARP as a WASP. WASPs barely exist anymore and to the extent that they do, they aren't meaningfully different from Manhattanite Jews, SoCal Indians, etc. Nobody gives a fuck anymore because WASPs don't have any real money.

T. Wasp whose direct male line goes back to before the revolution, some family homes listed in historical registry, tons of family who went to ivies, etc, grew up sailing.

The one thing about WASPs that is true is that sailing is fucking dope. And probably not as expensive as you would imagine! You can get a great 25-30' boat for <10k, and about 2k a year in maintenance and moorage, more depending on where you live. And sailboat racing is really, really fun.

This guy is mostly right. Part of the reason WASP aesthetics still carry such heavy associations with wealth and status in America is that each subsequent (or wannabe) elite class has tried to emulate them in order to legitimize themselves. Nowadays there are just as many jewish legacy admits at Ivies as there are WASPs because obtaining the trappings of eliteness was so important to the last few generations of upwardly mobile immigrant families.

I can trace my ancestry in North America back to the early 1600s, both parents went to prep schools (one to Andover) and Ivies, I spent summers growing up on the Cape at family members' yacht clubs. The culture still certainly exists but no longer exclusively holds the top rung of American society. It's interesting to watch the dynamics when WASP culture interacts with nouveaus, like in the upper class of Southern California or in eastern summer colonies with lots of New Yorkers.
