I finished my first attempt at dyeing a jacket. I spent a lot of money and didn't get what I wanted but I did learn some things.
The black dye didn't get into all of the canvas evenly. Possibly because it was pretty scrunched into the 3 gallon pot.
If I did this again the dye bath would be way bigger.
As is the canvas is probably acceptable as a black with fades.
It barely got into the stitching at all. I don't know if this is because stitching is like that generally or because it's a synthetic.
I don't really like the yellow contrast.
The selvage detail on the front pocket barely picked up any dye.

lmfao you dyed a raw denim jacket black?

So here you can see the yellow of the stitching, the bit of dye on the buttons and one of the whiter spots.
Except for the patchy spots this black looks darker irl.

It looks worse in the photos than irl.

ive tried this before, and it came out basically the same. i didnt bother doing a second session but i suppose it could help. i think different materials hold the dye better than others, the thread did the same thing for me. only thing i would use it for again probably is for replenishing faded black denim, that seemed to be the only thing that came out decently

I think it looks cool but I get if it isn't what you were going for

>> No.15019072

Did you:
follow the directions on the package
Add salt to the pot
Add dish soap to the pot
Heat the water
Stir constantly
?

Sometimes you can do all that and it still won't take but dye is cheap so just hit it again. Try really moving it around in the dye solution. Dish gloves are good for keeping your hands clean.

>> No.15019076

Also yeah the synthetic stitching isnt going to pick up dye very well. There is special dye for synthetics but I've never tried it

>> No.15019112

with that yellow stitching, you should have went with brown or green dye.

I think I will wear it until I work out exactly what I'll do next.
>>15019072
I stirred a bit but not as much as I probably should have. It was a 3 gallon pot and it was quite hard to move it around, especially trying not to splash dye all over the white tiles and counter. (Which I did anyway.)
Next time I would do it outside in a larger pot.

Hey anon, ty for this thread, always love seeing other /fa/ DIY projects. I have a few little projects I've done recently that I'll post.

I had a very similar attempt at dyeing a cotton jacket a while back. What I learned after is that bleaching the fabric to remove the pre-existing dye can help the new dye to set in better. How long did you dye for+how much did you move the jacket around as you dyed it?

Ive had to make a few repairs to this cotton sweater since I got it. I made the first couple with matching thread, but I got inspired to try some contrasting colours after finding a visible mending blog.

The matching repairs are hard to spot, but I like how the newer ones stick out. I'm hoping to practise Swiss darning next to match the preexisting texture.

I also have this shirt I got for £3 that I've been using as a kind of test ground. It came with the big folding cuffs like a dress shirt, so I cut those in half and blanket stitched the edges, then added some buttons. The edge stitching isn't holding up too well, so I think I'll add a zigzag stitch to stop it unravelling too far. Hopefully doesn't fall apart when I wash it.

i used the rit brand non-bleach bleach as per the instructions. The canvas came out quite pale and the stitching seemed untouched by it.
I didn't move it around as much as I should have.
>>15020088
I like it.

I'd like to get into some real shit too. Would love to be able to make my own stuff but I am a lazy cunt.

I've gotten these now. Haven't bought supplies yet. I think I'll stick to waxing the right one, but try to do it moderately since I'd like it to keep a bit of the softness.

For the left one I'll attempt using a bit of blue dye just to change the shade.

I think anon recommended procion fibre-reactive dye or some such thing so next time I'll probably give that a go.

Gonna start out with this tomorrow when I have access to a washing machine. Brown for the left jacket and blue for the right one. Not sure if I'll use the full bottle of blue.

Realized to go back and get more salt (originally thought I would mix dyes an do one jacket), but I think I'll do the brown first and then take it from there in case I want more dye as well.

Here's estimates for how much one bottle will color different ammounts of fabric, but since there's already quite a bit of color in the jackets I think I'll just have to see what happens.

>> No.15021566

>>15021552
just remember synthetic stitching doesnt pick up dye so you're going to get contrast with the original color of the jacket.

Weighed the larger jacket and it's 1200g. Since I just want a darker and more uniform shade, with the pattern still clear, I might just use 2/3 of the bottle for a start. Stuff came up though so it has to wait until tomorrow.
