There are plenty of shitty designs, and good designs with shitty executions out there. I have seen tons of cringe tattoos (especially in the army). It's like everything else, if you know what you're getting into, do a lot of research, and pay for the quality you want, it can be a really effay move. We live in an era where not only are tattoos way more accepted by mainstream society, but high quality artists and designs are so much more acceptable. Remember the 90s and 2000s when all you'd ever see is some stupid barbed wire or fake tribal? Chinese letters? Tramp stamps? Zodiac signs? People like to hate on all the really intricate woodcut, irezumi, linework, and traditional american trends because they just want to seem edgy and contrarian. Over on /fit/ they seem to think you need to be a full blown viking warrior in a gang in order to justify getting them, but last time I checked we don't really take advice from 16 year old boomers who don't even lift.

Long story short, yes tattoos can be pretty effay, especially considering we're going through something of a tattoo renaissance at the moment.
