How do I into loafers? What is the difference between lined and unlined ones? Which should I get? What are some brands that offer good ones in the 500USD or less range?
These ones are from Carmina and I like the look.

>> No.14892642 [DELETED]

>> No.14892745

Loafers are harder to fit because they are slip ons and you might have to size down a full size to 1.5 sizes

>> No.14892790

>>14892595
Unlined are for going sockless during summer. Unless you live in a really hot place, get lined ones (if it doesn't specify "unlined", it's lined)

If I were you I would begin with a moc-toe beefroll penny loafer, it's the most casual design and also a classic. Sleeker penny loafers are more formal. Another good option for beginners are string loafers.

For brands, I wouldn't jump directly into Carmina, get something between 100-200$ for a start, they'll do the job fine and will last you some years. If you like them, get something better next time

I just came back from El Corte Ingles and I have to confess that I forgot how extremely mallcore that place is. The only areas that picked my interest were The shoes and underwear...
Their ties were unremarkable, the only good shirts were from Eton, cufflinks were horrible, jackets, all fused garbage.
I guess I will just stick with local curated boutiques for buying my clothes.

>> No.14892913

Rancourt, Cheaney, Crockett and Jones, and Alden are all in your price range. I've owned shoes, not loafers, from each and have liked them all. Crockett and jones are my favorite though, the harvard 2 is a great loafer. You may have to wait a few months to get a pair of crockett and Jones' though.

The one in Lisbon. It had all of those brands except Brooks Brothers, but most of them are just mediocre to me. Lacoste was cool, but I was not after polos. Barbour is quite small here and does not have leather goods, which are the products with the best cost vs quality ratio of the brand. I guess Salvatore Ferragamo has some nice accessories at the €120 range, but I would rather just go to Hermés at that point.
The van heusen brands are quite terrible in my opinion. One could argue that Ralph Lauren may be worth the price in the US, but in Europe it most definitely is not.

>One could argue that Ralph Lauren may be worth the price in the US, but in Europe it most definitely is not.
Agreed. Ralph has been copying trad English pieces since day 1 and in the last decade+ the quality's dropped like a rock. There's nothing in that worth saving.

Ralph Lauren on sales is a great purchase, at ECI you get them at 40% and it's worth it. Their OCBDs are good at the 50-65€ range and some of the designs and colours are quite unique and nice.

Probably NWT or LNWOT ties, bow ties, and pocket squares from higher end brands like Drakes, Hermes, etc. I think the value of these items is significantly underrated by a lot of thrift stores stateside, so a rack of ties might just all be $3-5 or whatever. Actual clothing is a total crapshoot for me, if I wore a 36R or 46R I'd have a fucking massive wardrobe of mint items from the best brands though.

That is usually the hallmark of a bad quality shirt. The collar and the cuffs being stiff mean that they are glued. Ideally a collar should have an interlining, much like a free-floating suit, and have solid pallets that give it its shape.
Out of the more mainstream brands, I think only boggi Milano and facconable have them. I haven’t checked Brooks Brothers or jpress in the US, but they ought to have them.
My father’s bespoke shirts all have removable metal stays, it is quite nice.

There's a guy at book shop here in Paris who dresses like that (complete with bowtie) and I think despite his job and location, even he struggles to pull it off.

Of course, probably the ones with more % of polyester are the most resistant to water. Probably pill more as well. The cold protection might be similar on all.

I think they are changing the models every year, because on internet I am seeing lots of different ones. Have you tried their duffle coats? Saw one sometime ago at a local shop and looked good

Mine is approx. 6mm thick. How much is your?
I think cold protection should be similar, as composition and lining are the same.
I wonder how water repellent it can be, as the cloth is not ribbed, and there was no tag (maybe missing? I don't know. It was sold as water repellent).
Never seen fabric with vertical ribbing, but metallic buttons are offered on women models.

I have never tried a duffle coat. They do look good tho. Only thing, if the lining is the same as on the peacoat, it may be quite cold (I like this coat to be kinda warm).
Their garments quality seems to be good.
A catalog would be nice, with all these models.

Shitty perspective in photo, my caliper is at workplace so I used the rule. It's around 8.5-9.5mm of thick more or less at the area where buttons are, but in that area is folded and one of the parts seems thicker than the other. One is around 5.5-6mm and the other one seems like half. So thickness is around 5.5-6mm in the overall outside.

The more synthetic the more water repellent, think of a parka or some raincoat.

The closest to a catalog is this, and it seems cloths and buttons slightly change in those 2 years:

Mine appear to be approx. 6.5-7mm thick on the folded area (2.5mm int-4.5 ext), overall say 5.5mm.
I don't know if it just wool woven differently, or a "lighter" version. They seem similar.

Mine seem like pic related, but darker.

I agree, a spring peacoat is not the best. Shiny fabrics. I'd use a Barbour instead, or other jackets.

I feel quite comfortable dressing /tip/ for work in an office and the occasional semi-formal gathering, but I have no idea how to dress casually in this style. I feel that, without a sport coat or blazer of some sort, an outfit's shape and flow get messed up. but then I also feel weird wearing them casually, or without a tie.

Semi-formal would be black tie. You are talking about informal dress, which covers regular suits and some blazer combinations but the point is still clear.
Pulling out a sports coat or blazer casually usually depends on the fabric and colours you choose. Navy and grey are rather hard to pull off casually, while brown is much easier. Materials such as cotton, linen and tweed are much easier for casual wear as well.
I don't like using a jacket without a tie either. In this case, I really like using knit ties with the regular square point. You also have more liberty to play with the tie width on these. Normal ties look really bad at any width other than 8cm, but knit ties can be thinner and look decent, with a more casual look.
If you want to pull out a look without a jacket, the issue usually comes from the trousers, as the model we have nowadays is usually associeted with the use of jackets. It is mostly a psychological thing, i think. You can just use chinos instead, if that is the issue.

Black tie is still considered formal wear. Semi-formal is business attire. Am I right?

>> No.14900729

>>14900727
According to the rules created last century, formal wear would be white tie, semi-formal would be black tie and informal would be regular suits (business attire) and formal blazers, like I mentioned. Everything else would be considered casual.
Personally, I think that black tie should be ditched altogether and business attire would be considered semi-formal. The difference between "informal" and "casual" is not very didatic at all.

To me the difference between a good informal costume and a black tie one is not enough to justify the jump of a dress code to another, specially considering that most people don't even use velvet jackets or cummerbunds in black tie dress nowadays. White tie is simply different enough to merit the effort of a dress code, more rooted in tradition and prettier, in my opinion.

I apologize for being daft, but could you post an example of what you mean? I think I can kind of imagine what you're saying re : trousers looking out of place or incomplete without an accompanying jacket, but what sort of look are you prescribing here? Thinking on it further, I believe that one of my issues is the fact that all of the clothes (trousers specifically, but the other items are chosen to work synergistically with them) I wear for work/informal dress as you term it are mid-high rise, and I absolutely love the way they all come together and the way a jacket ties everything together and the proportions they create.

Taking the jacket off, a shirt with higher rise /tip/ pants feels too different from what other people are wearing, like I stand out. though I could be imagining this. wearing lower rise pants like my formerly beloved jeans, tucking in my shirt feels weird, but then untucking it makes me proportions look all fucky. I wish I wasn't so detail oriented and noticing and that I could just dress myself without autistically noticing everything.

The issue with the trousers is not so much about how i look, but rather how i feel when pairing "dress" trousers made out of wool with a plain shirt, with or without a sweater. It makes me feel like my upper body is naked, and in my lifetime i probably have used more of the shirt+tie+trousers outfit than a proper suit, so it is not a question of getting used to it. Maybe I am alone on this, but that is how i feel.
>Taking the jacket off, a shirt with higher rise /tip/ pants feels too different from what other people are wearing, like I stand out. though I could be imagining this
I have to admit that up to last week i had never had a pair of high-rise trousers/pants. My first pair are joggers that i bought for the gym, and I am stunned by how much more comfortable they are than regular low-rise pants for exercising, so i can only imagine for trousers. With that being said, i feel that if the trousers will only stand out if their height is above your navel. My navel-height pants look aesthetically identical to low-rise ones to me. Technically these are mid-rise, and proper high-rise trousers would sit above your navel, on your waist when sitted. If that is the case, from my experience with equestrianism where they are commonly used, they will look pretty out of place.

I'm not saying that your critics are right or that they aren't taking things too far as the other anon said, but I would caution against a line of thought that goes like that. Not wanting to post your face on 4chan isn't necessarily tantamount to having anything to hide and demonstration of superior ability/quality in something is not absolutely necessary to levy a critique of the metric in question. Though I do think there is a moderate to moderately strong correlation. Just don't let sneakerfags and misanthropic weirdos on 4chan get you too jaded or suspicious of people offering comments in general.
