I may be wrong on some points, but from my view it draws inspiration from...

As for the clothes themselves, for me it's older style cuts, everything wool, and all choice of pieces is based at least equally between function and aesthetic. If it's not straight up Euro/Scandi milsurp, it will be a cross-over with Dark Academia.
Others may see this differently, but to me DA is basically neofolk for emo rich kids. Where neofolkers draw inspiration from old militaries, peasant wear, hiking gear etc. from ~1930s-1940s, DA draws inspiration from the garb of philosophers and politicians of that age.

One of my gripes with the neofolk aesthetic is the in my view too big of a focus on the 2 worldwars and military clothing, as they are, despite being destinct for each country, still a product of globalization and standardization of the military: all of the fits are the same combination of antique gray wool milsurp with the occasional leather or dyed wool items.
I think neofolk and other volkish style should focus more on the diverse traditional european styles of dress of folk costumes and tracht that varried from region to region and used colorful folk fabrics, honing actual tradition, instead of trying to recreate the dreary style of the 1910's-40's.
You don't have to always dress dark, gloomy and martial to be volkish

You couldn't be more wrong. Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian militaries all had really nice stuff, especially their winter gear; pretty much any European milsurp (from Britain to Russia and everything inbetween) from before 1995 can be reasonably incorporated into a neofolk fit. The origin of the piece does not (well, should not) matter as much as its quality and function.
Obviously Wehmacht gear is the quintessential /neofolk/ look but not all of us live in free-speech oriented societies. I personally prefer the more ambiguous look anyway.
