Yeossal and Berg&Berg are probably the best out of those, with Natalino priced slightly lower. That said, Natalino is one of the best value options out there, and the quality is still very good.

For sweaters, you have lots of great budget options like Jamieson's, Harley's, Alan Paine and Berg&Berg. Drake's has great shirts on sale at the end of the season. But for things like trousers, jackets and coats, I find that it just isn't good to go cheap.

Thank you, Natalino looked good for the price but it's unfortunate that a lot of sizes are sold out so I'll probably end up with Berg&Berg unless there are UK alternatives because they look good.

If I want a softer looking sweater, it's better to get merino/cashmere right? I tried some shetland wool sweater but they really do look rough and worn.

Shetland wool, alongside Harris tweed is mainly rough. It's a rough wool. If you are wearing a sweater you have to wear a layer underneath. You need to be looking at something such as merino wool if you want s soft non-scratchy sweater.

Everyone goes crazy for Shetland well, I can take it or leave it, most of my sportsjackets are just 100% pure new/virgin wool.

hey guys thanks for help in previous thread i have a few questions after reading this thread and noticing that it is a good time to buy shirts

1. Should I buy for my current measurements? (I am lifting and cut/bulk so my measurements change somewhat fast but idk how I can buy nice things if this happens)

2. How does Berg&Berg compare to Drake's for shirts? How does buying expensive shirts compare to some UNIQLO ones I could get? I thought Drake's were good quality but the Berg&Berg look very good on the website. Are there any other options made in the UK?

3. Is it easier to wear non button downs casually in EU/UK or should I only be buying OCBDs?

4. What kind of sleeve length difference compared my actual length is allowable without looking ridiculously long?

5. How do I make white look less harsh? I like navy and light blue but I am leaning towards white (for first few expensive pieces) since the majority of my wardrobe is tonal but I have no idea how to balance bright shirts since I only really wear black and charcoal to the face.

>Should I buy for my current measurements?

Pretty hard to answer really, I am a Winter bulker in which I maybe add 15lbs but because it's cold for me, I wear jackets most places but my other clothing, for 9 months or so, I get it so fit when I have cut to my normal size because that's when you will see most of it. You are screwed for buying well fitting clothes though if you are a lifter, it's actually why I am learning basic tailoring so I can take in/let out my clothes by an inch or so.

At the moment though sometimes my clothes are either a bit too tight and then a bit too loose as I have clothes in both sizes to fit my changing shape.

>What kind of sleeve length difference compared my actual length is allowable without looking ridiculously long?

Sleeve length really matters, it can really make or break an outfit. You have to stay within an inch or your real length. Make sure you have the measurement from the arm seem to the cuff.

If your shirt under a jacket, you could wear sleeve garters to hold it up. I wouldn't wear them without a jacket. The main issue is jacket sleeves being right.

>How do I make white look less harsh?

Your other layers have to be light pastel, a white shirt with a pastel blue jacket is going to look much better than a white shirt with a dark navy jacket. An off white is really more versatile.

I don't really do brands, I do materials. In my opinion you should learn what are good/bad materials and then base your shirts and clothing on that. If something is made of good quality real fabrics and not something like polyester, that's already an indication that it is decent quality. Low quality clothing will have blends.

While some high street fashion brands will also have poor quality blends because they rely on the brand. Brand is never a good indicator of quality. Most quality menswear is not a high street fashion brand.

Like lots of people will pick up some "tweed" jacket from a high street chain and it will be a blend, sometimes 40% wool and 60% polyester. Very poor quality.

1. Do you expect to grow too much? Usually buying a size more is not a big deal, at least with M-L sizes. The issue is just in shoulders and slim-baggy, but for 5 extra cm in chest is not noticeable if you go for Big size

2. Viyella and Cordings are other options

3. In UK button downs are part of British Country Clothing, and in the rest of the EU they are also more popular than button downs. I personally prefer the look of an ocbd or a button down

4. Put a watch on your wrist, extend arm, if the end of the sleeve is 1cm or more away from the end of the watch, you are in dangerous zone

5. White shirt is fine with light blue pants, khaki, olive or pink. White pants work with nearly anything on the top part of your body

Got two nice Kamakura shirts (red university stripe and blue university stripe with the little collar tab) on their half-off sale, as well as a tattersall shirt of questionable quality in a different sale.

I also got two new pairs of brown cords (light and dark), a nice Pendleton sweater, an understated fair isle sweater, some dark green pants and some Nantucket reds which I got on a deep sale since they're hardly in season.

Also got some new black wingtips, because my 8-year-old Florsheims are finally giving up the ghost. All around a great Black Friday.

Bottom up or bottom down for a shirt+jumper look? I am going to get two, light blue and white.

https://www.sunspel.com/euro/mens-fine-merino-wool-jumper-light-navy-mjum8058.html
Why a Sunspel jumper? I've been considering John Smeadley, but the nicest colours (navy, midnight...) are not on sale.

https://www.piniparma.com/collections/trousers/products/avio-flannel-trousers-soragna-capsule-collection-made-in-italy?ls=en
I really like these trousers, but I don't know if the weight of a suit trouser would work well with the previous clothes.

All this would be combined with a black oxford, barely decorated (straight brogue tiptoe at most) or some brown chukkas.
Thoughts?

Can't offer you any help since I'm essentially doing the same thing as you. A lot of merino sweaters look far too thin and too dressy and whilst I'd like to be more on the formal, I don't want to look like I should be in an office with a high sheen sweater.

They look really good, VBC is a really good fabric maker. Just make sure that you get a large enough fit in the hip, leg and ankle. Wool trousers should not fit like slim jeans, as wool doesn't stretch - instead, wool trousers should hang and drape cleanly, like in pic related.

you are hurting sheep by not using wool

look at what you've done

>> No.14829506

>>14829485
ok so yeah that’s what I thought originally, just been reading about it today. Assuming they are sheared correctly, not all castrated and conditions are good etc the issue still comes from the fact that wild sheep do not have that issue, instead people have bred sheep like that for a greater wool yield so that shearing is required. I’m not really sure what the correct stance to take is with that because you’re helping in the current but it’s also demand causing them to be bred to a point where they grow too much wool. Some people like thrifting but it’s just the same thing and further down the chain imo.

Obviously it’s all quite arbitrary because where do you draw the line? Just makes me wonder. Besides, cotton just looks so shit.

You need to add wool, it's not gonna harm sheeps or goats. Btw, you can find different cloths made of cotton, for example Corduroy.

>> No.14829555

>>14829542
Nothing, I am not vegan but I was just asking here after reading about it since it’s making me question my stance. The biggest argument is the fact that they are commercialised and bred to require the shearing. I guess that breeding for personal gain could probably be applied to other animals like dogs too (gain being the enjoyment from ‘owning’) and I really think harm to an animal is totally different than a haircut (barring all actual bad welfare practises). Probably some weird mechanism in my head before I was about to drop £500 on wool sweaters and scarves.

Yeah I have no idea how people do it, the only option would be faux leather. Does faux leather hold up better than normal since plastic hardly degrades? I have no idea since I’ve never really seen attractive faux leather on belts or shoes.

This is a kind of a trick question because "wool trousers" aren't really one category. In the winter, I find flannels to look really good with sweaters and cardigans and the like. High twist worsteds - the kind people think about when they think of suit trousers -don't look as good with casual wear imo. In warmer weather, agim I feel that more casual fabricks like cotton twill and linen are better than worsteds.

Yes, sweaters worn with sports coats should be cut short. The silhouette looks very dumb when you have 30cm of sweater poking under your top button. It just doesn't look harmonic at all and kills the fit.
Long sweaters have been what brands have sold for the past decades because low cut jeans have been the norm. With higher cut trousers, why not wear a shorter sweater that far better accentuates your V taper and makes your waist more pronounced?

For the hundredth time, /tip/ is not a uniform. It's a style subject to interpretation of its core themes. Now balance work well into the colleague athleticism element of it. Pairing them with chinos would balance out sportiness of them and bring them into the preppy style. Modern /tip/ should take cues from the past but not be enslaved to them. Otherwise you become a meme. I'm sure if ivy League students had the option to wear nb shoes in the 50s they would have. They wore the sneakers available to them.
