Perhaps your nose was tired after all that sniffing and what you thought you smelled on black orchid was altered by all the other perfumes you tried, and that's why it's different when you tried it again with a "fresh" nose after.
It could be that you tried two different batches of the same perfume, but that's a rabbit hole not worth going into. I'd suggest giving it another go in another store if you can, and see if it's the one you loved.
Trying many different frags is great to find what you like and what you love, but take sampling in a store as a first impression only, which may change later. I'd say try 4 or 6 frags each visit, take the paper strips home and see how it develops into the drydown, it's what I usually do even if I dislike it.

I got a an tester of Encens Mythique in the old bottle style. I love it, I get light rose, light sweetness in the heart that must be from the patch, but its mostly about aldehydes and ambergris. I wanted it because I wanted to because I don't have an ambergris perfume in my collection. I started looking through reviews and its got a big batch code debate where some people think the only release worth owning is the original 2012 batch. Why must they do this? Its the same story with L'Instant de Guerlain EDP which I own. Many people think if its not LIDGE IN THE BLACK RIM BOTTLE its not worth owning. Im just happy with the two that I own and don't care to be that big of a nerd to seek out smelling the older batches.

On the bus the other day an older couple got on and sat in front of me. The lady was wearing what I'm guessing was a vintage chypre because there was civet in the air. I really enjoyed it.

I find it odd that this has become the fedora (well, the thing people actually hate is a trilby but nobody knows what that is) of the fragrance game. Obviously like anything else in fashion fragrances go out of style, but I can’t think of any other vintage fragrance that is as universally reviled as this one, which is strange because it was far and above the most well received fragrance of its day. This is definitely true, but I feel like there’s a lot more hate surrounding Drakkar Noir than say Obsession or Polo Green or other stereotypical dadcore frags. The thing about Drakkar Noir is that most millenials and zoomers don't even realize it's an actual fragrance. They literally just think it's a Family Guy joke. In my experience whenever I wear it I get compliments saying I smell really good, and then when I tell them it's Drakkar Noir they actually don't believe me because they thought Drakkar Noir must've been a joke because haha funny family guy scene.

The thing about fedoras is that the wearers invariably think that they are tapping into some sort of sophistication that non fedora wearers will never get. Kouros and Drakkar are right out, as they are cthonian forces of nature rather than m'lady pleasing "swag is for boys, class is for men" type vibes. As much as I hate to say it, that fits moreso with something like Eau Sauvage or Chanel Pour Monsieur, or even Aventus.
