cleaning out wardrobe and was appalled by the number of ugly and unworn items
would like to limit myself to the essentials
what do you guys think is the optimum number of items per clothing category? (10 shoes? 5 jackets?)

Easy. Professional wardrobe capsule
>7 white collar shirts (SuSu and up)
>7 white undershirts /tee (any)
>two suits, maybe a third in odd (SuSu and up)
>fuck iGent navy, only charcoal
>black captoe oxfords, brown captoe derbies (Carmina and up)
>7 pair of fine (!) socks (Falke)
>7 underpants (any)
>three silk ties (navy + bordeaux solid; I tend to go for navy, one regimental only at all times) (50€ per tie minimum)
>1 linen pocket square (any)
>optional: hats
This is what I'd boil it down to; fit is king here. And more money means better clothes. I give you advice as if talking to my younger self who ditches all his tees and shitty clothing. But then again, capsule wardrobe does not go well with professional clothes as you will constantly want to diversify your portfolio (i.e. linen fabrics for summer, lighter and thicker wools depending on weather, overcoats, more shoes, more ties, etc.) but this is a start and - as i tell anyone - you should go professional when your bodily growth comes to a halt. You're old enough.
