Avoid low rise and slim fit pants. Those of us with big thighs and butts need more fabric to avoid exposing everything.
Chinos are a staple.
Not sure about rugby footwear but you can't go wrong with loafers. I recommend Ranger/Camp Mocs as other options. Don't care for boat shoes but many like them.
The key is getting the fit right. Make sure the shoulders and waist fit perfectly. The rest can be adjusted. Do not worry too much about the gut, prep clothes tend to drape and will more or less hide the excess weight.
