Break in time, sizing relative to Brannock and other boots, comfort, thoughts on leather quality, patina, and care, durability, strong and weak points, etc.
If you can compare them to Wolverine 1K's as objectively as possible. I have W1K's (bought on sale for half price) and have never had a problem with them although many others have complained.

>> No.14421123

>>14421072
A lot of this is leather specific. I own a pair in CXL and a pair in brown oiled smooth.
>Break in time
For the CXL boots there was basically no break in. It's one of the best things about it. Mild discomfort for a day or two and then they quickly became the most comfortable boots I own. The brown oiled smooth leather is a lot thicker and stronger, as it's one of their actual work boot leathers. That took about a week but then it softened up. It's still not on the same level of comfort as my CXL pair, but it's still something I can and have worn for 12 hours straight some days.
>Sizing relative to Brannock and other boots
Half size down rule applies. I am an 8.5D on the Brannock and I wear 8D in both pairs. Fits perfectly, no slip, no pinching. I also wear an 8D in Red Wing's number 8 last, so my Iron Rangers are the same size.
>Comfort
Extremely comfortable. White's boots have a way of almost cradling your foot that I haven't encountered on other boots before. It's something you really need to experience in person.
>Thoughts on leather quality
White's in famously good for their clicking, especially for CXL. My CXL boots look amazing and creased wonderfully. The brown oiled ones crease a bit more and differently, but not worse, just differently. It's a different leather with different properties. Quality is top notch on both pairs.
>Patina
Black is black, so my CXL pair doesn't really have any. I polish them from time to time as CXL is top dyed and scuffs reveal the brown underneath.
The brown oiled smooth is awesome because it has reddish colors underneath. Especially in the heel where the most scuffs are. I think in a year when they're even more beat up they will look incredible with the red and brown shades.
>Care
Wipe and brush, condition as needed. Very low maintenance. They designed to be work boots after all.
>Durability
No issues but both pairs are young still.
>Strong points
Support and comfort
>Weak
None.
Don't own 1k to compare, sorry.

frankly, I don't know much about the specifics about crepe soles (despite owning shoes with them lel), but I'm pretty sure they can be resoled.
Crepe soled shoes are generally made in one of two ways that I have seen. The shoes in question use a method where the upper is stitched to an outsole (I assume the insole remains loose if there is one), and then the crepe rubber is simply glued to outsole. It sounds bad, but I have boots made this way which I have worn reasonably well, and I haven't had any issues with it.
The second way is a lot simpler to explain... it's just a blake/rapid stitch where instead of a leather outsole it's a piece of crepe rubber.

>leather sole on a work boot
>the worst clicking of CXL leather in the industry which is a direct result of Wolverine trying to use every single part of the hide to cut corners and save money
>very high likelihood of loose grain as a result
>non-existent quality control, sloppy stitching and loose threads in particular

The worst thing is their clicking though. The high tier brands use the best parts of the hide and get rid of the bad parts. Wolverine will use every single part, even the parts that shouldn't be used, so they can save money. This results in using low quality leather that creases poorly and develops loose grain. Wolverine is notorious for it. CXL is bad enough when it comes to loose grain, but add in Wolverine using shitty parts of the hide and you're basically asking for it.
The clicking is one of those things that separates the good boot makers from the bad, and Wolverine is definitely one of the bad. I wouldn't touch their ugly boots even if you gave me a pair for free.

It's a heritage work boot, same as what Red Wing does.
The point is that they charge almost 400 for their boots when the quality and construction is what you would get on a 200 dollar boot. Their website says they're 385, for 15 dollars more I could buy a pair of boots from White's or Nicks and get an extremely high quality boot made of the best hides with a Dainite or lug sole.
Wolverines have no business costing as much as they do. I'd buy a pair if they were half their normal price and then went on sale further.

Yeah, CXL is pretty soft in general and as a result it's really good about breaking in and shaping to a user's foot. The issue is clicking and making sure the company uses the good pieces. Alden is also really bad about using shitty parts of the hide, it's not just Wolverine.

I don't know much about shanks to say, but I know that different brands use different material. Red Wing I think uses metal shanks, correct me if I'm wrong on that one, and my Rangers are comfortable. Interestingly Whites uses leather shanks and they're the most comfortable boots I've worn. The leather shank breaks into your foot just as any other part of the boot resulting in almost a custom fit.
I know wooden shanks can break though and brands like Alden use them

Just discovered the Rick clear tractor sole boots and I love them. How would you style them?

>> No.14424440

>>14421438

Yeah, service boots. I've had them for a few years now, and they're rock solid. The leather is super high quality, basically no grain loosening or undue wear.

When they're new, the leather is still soft, so you have to be more careful with damage until they've got that nice dark patina.

They are heavy though, and the grip isn't great, and I prefer sandals and minimalist shoes these days. Also, I moved and no longer have to deal with the wet Vancouver winters I bought them for. At least for now.

I don't regret the buy at all. I'll own them for the rest of my life.

I bought them in person, and the guy gave me a sweat deal, and they've raised their prices since I bought, so i got them for a lot less than current price.

Overall, I can recommend if you want a solid lifetime boot, you're into boots, and you can pay for quality.

Careful with sizes. I got sized in person, and their lasts are weird, so I ended up getting a boot two sizes below my sneaker size, which is slightly tight, but basically just right.

I'd post a pic, but I'm out of town right now, and don't have access to them.

I loved mine for years, and I'm probably one of the few people out there who actually bought them as actual work boots. (When I worked in an automotive fabrication shop, they've got a bunch of advantages for that role including really good nonskid, thin hard soles that give you good feel on a TIG pedal, leather construction that makes them more resistant to sparks, they're slimmer and have less sticky out bits so they're better when climbing in and out of rollcages and working crammed into odd angles, etc.) They were comfy for all day wear on hard floors and I also used to wear them to conventions where I'd be on my feet like 14+ hours a day for several days straight.

Sadly my feet suddenly grew half a size a year or two ago and now they give me heel blisters, I'm hoping maybe I can stretch them out a bit if I wear them regularly for a few hours at a time and maybe help with the blisters by using a heel lock knot or something.

Styling them is all on you, but it's gonna be hard to not make them the focus of the outfit. They've definitely got a Blade Runner kind of cyberpunk about them. So if you're into tech-wear kind of stuff, these could compliment that look. I'd stay away from logos, though, otherwise you could end up going too hypebeast. I also think some more natural fabrics in your fit would help to contrast the rubber(s) in these boots.

I’ve worn Lucchese ropers, a pair of thrifted Docs, and a pair of Wolverine-made LL Bean Engineer boots for the past 5 years. The ropers don’t go with my entire wardrobe anymore, the Docs’ soles are all but dead, and the Beans never really fit my high arches well. I’m thinking about trying either Danner Mountain Lights or Blundstones. Does anybody have recommendations and/or experience with either long term?

Hey guys, one of my female friends has been asking me for help finding her some boots that she loves. I've been trying to use reverse image search on these, but I'm struggling because I know nothing about boot brands. I'm hoping maybe one of you can point me in the right direction?

Thank you so much, either way.

I appreciate the tip, mate. Those are also some good-ass boots. We're kinda looking for some floppy hi tops, tho. I get that it's largely just not using the last few lace loops, but some boots look better like that than others. I'll definitely have her check out the thursday maga boots tho.

If a boot is under $200 it immediately calls the quality into question. A lot of these kinds of boots have shitty welts, horrible stitching, horrible materials, and fall apart due to faulty cement construction.

If you can spare the change, Red Wing Iron Rangers / Blacksmiths are similar, Dayton, Sanders. Expect to spend at least $300+ on boots for decent quality.

Picked up these boots from Goodwill today for $8 and was wondering if they were anything interesting.

From what I can gather, they are made in the USA and are from the 70's. The sole says Mighty Atlas and the tongue and insole on the right boot says OLYMPIAN.

I used to clean with a damp cloth and soft toothbrush (mud and shit) then wax on with Altber Leder Gris.
