I just figured out my grandma threw out my grandpa's old R-154 radio. That thing was fully functional! She said she got $70 for it, probably as scrap. I'm absolutely fucking pissed off about it. She said no one wanted it an it was taking up space. FUCKING WHAT? It was in the garage ffs, and I said multiple times that I WANTED IT once I move out to my own place and get a ham license. I'm moving out in two weeks too.

I'll set it up in my new place, though I don't know how I'm gonna get an antenna set up. It has also has teletype a teletype receiver (the bottom "drawer"), that with a proper cable should interface with any Linux machine with a serial port.

Now that I properly flipped my lid over it, I should really start working on obtaining that ham license.

The collection does not look like it was put together with any forethought so it's just a bunch of watches in the same box, not a collection.

Pick one of the Presages, dispose of the rest.

The Citizen is dogshit.
That Seiko chronograph looks like the kind of watch a middle schooler would pick after he graduates from a Casio digital.
The Presages are nice, but redundant.
The Bambino is a fucking meme.
Caravelle by Bulova? Why would a shitty brand need an even shittier sub-brand?

You build a collection either around theme (I collect pre-Swatch Omega Seamasters) or around purpose (a sports watch, a dress watch, a casual watch, a travel watch, etc).

This is a little more unified a collection than >>14219847, in that it's actually a collection. That said, it's pretty sad. (And I say this as a Seiko fan)

The Seiko 5? Don't wear watches that look like a Sub unless they're a Sub. Also, don't wear Seiko 5 period. They come from an era when you actually needed a watch and not everyone had a phone and digital watches were actually expensive. Get rid of it.

The 9983-7000 is actually pretty nice.

The Ananta is shit. The dial is poorly laid-out and the whole watch is too fucking big. Once you get past "automatic chronograph" it has zero appeal.

The Flightmaster, on the other hand, is pretty interesting. It's obvious they were biting off Breitling's style, though, and that means I'd just as soon not wear it.

The Ripley is great.

Gold plating? No, never. Solid gold or no gold. That's the rule.

Because that watch terrible. Longines is a miserable shell of its former glory. If you're set on Longines, there are nice ones (like the Legend Diver no-date) but the Conquest series in general is a dog's dinner.

In terms of case finishing and dial work, they (GS) are perfect. They really are. Handle one in the metal.
Both make in-house movements (GS does not simply do gussied-up versions of the movements they put in other watches, they are their own company within Seiko)
But Rolex also costs 3-5 times what the Grand Seiko costs and it's not immediately obvious how the Rolex is 3-5 times better.

Aluminum bezel insert, unimpressive lume strength.

What's to fucking talk about? The goofy giant numbers or the completely disjointed design language?

The Hydroconquest was literally created to fill a price gap in desk divers because the Swatch group moved Omega up into another price bracket when they went with the coaxial movements across the range and the popular Seamaster was now considerably more expensive than before.

Taste in design is subjective, manufacturing quality, finishing, and price are not.

GS does excellent external finishing on dials, hands, indices, cases, and bracelets, though Rolex does super tight fitting bracelet end links and produces bracelets with less flex and better clasps. GS also does more movement finishing on their movements than Rolex do. They also tend to have a better price to quality ratio than Rolex.

I despise maxi-case Rolex designs, but that doesn't lead me to claim Rolex makes shit watches just because they aren't to my aesthetic taste.

Do you realize how it is that they got the new hydroconquest to have a 65h power reserve? By replacing the ETA 2892-A2's escapement with the escapement out of a powermatic 80 and dropping the beat rate to 21,600. At which point the movement no longer has any of the 2892's chronometric advantages over the 2824, and the movement essentually becomes a thinner Powermatic 80.

Fucking Swatch found a way to rob the 2892 of everything that made it good and yet still use the 2892's reputation to the pull the wool over the eyes of consumers.

This was bought by a family member for me as a graduation present a number of years ago, and I’d like to wear it when I go to visit him, but the inside of the face has developed this odd vein-y almost frost-like pattern. Who exactly do you think is answering these questions kek?

First of all, I'd avoid 56xx King Seikos in favour of 52xx models. The 56xx has chronic issues with a plastic gear in the quickset mechanism for the date shrinking and cracking due to age, and causing the quickset to fail. Plus, Daini adjusted their 52xx King Seikos to a higher standard than Suwa adjusted their 56xx King Seikos (since Daini never internally accepted Grand Seiko being placed above their own King Seiko brand in the product hierarchy).

As far as 52xx King Seikos go, they tend to be pretty reliable and don't usually need replacement parts, and even if they do, donors are plentiful in the form of cheap LM Specials with lesser versions of the the 52xx.

I'd look on Yahoo! Japan Auctions through a proxy bidding site like ZenMarket or Buyee rather than on eBay. You'll find much better deals. Just search for "Seiko 5245" "Seiko 5246" "Seiko 5256". The only downside to Y! Japan Auctions is crappier pictures and engerish product descriptions, plus the risk of no buyer protection, but I believe the risk is worth it at savings you can get vs. eBay.

The Powermatic-80 escapement is laser cut at the factory to set its timing performance and has a very limited range of adjustments around the behaviour created by the laser cutting of the wheel. This means that there is a very limited ability to compensate for changes in the chronometric behaviour of the escapement over the years, and particularly, post servicing.

From my point of view those laser cut escapement a are strictly inferior to a traditional regulated balance that has been properly adjusted by a skilled watchmaker.

Do you see how the balance wheel on the L888 only had a stud and two eccentric weights on the balance wheel, and how there is no regulator arm? That is the same balance wheel design as the Powermatic 80, and that type of balance wheel design will not work correctly unless it is balanced at the factory by selectively removing weight from the balance wheel, which The Swatch Group does using a laser.

The L619/888 is the same as the L888, it was just easier to find a good pic or the L888.2 version.

Doesn't exist, certainly not if you want automatic with no date, the only automatic chronographs for that much are Seiko and Citizens from the 70s and they've got dates.
May I interest you in a 7a28-7020? It's quartz but the movement is of full metal construction with 15 jewels and each register runs from its own stepper motor. It's also the first ever analogue quartz chronograph, so somewhat tenuously "horological history". James Bond wore the same watch in "A View to a Kill" if that's your kind of thing.

All L888 variants use that same Powermatic-80 style escapement.

>>14225295
In order to understand why those Swatch Group escapements don't work the same way as a proper free sprung balance such as those produced by Rolex, Patek, JLC. etc I have to go a little bit into how a free sprung balance works.

Basically, the timing performance of a balance wheel is determined by several factors: How balanced the balance wheel is on its axis, the length of the hairspring, the inertia of the balance wheel, and the geometry of the hairspring.

On a free sprung balance wheel, the length of the spring is fixed, and the geometry of the hairspring is usually as close as possible to an evenly spaced spiral, however, eccentric weights near the rim of the balance wheel in at least 4 locations allow a watchmaker to finely adjust both the balance of the balance wheel, and its inertia, with the balance wheel gaining inertia as the weights are moved further out from the center axis, and vice versa as they are moved closer.

The further out from the center axis these eccentric weights are located, the more adjustment range they provide because a small weight will have a larger effect in changing the inertia of a balance wheel the further away the weight is to start.

Now, once you understand that, you can look at a Powermatic 80 style balance and notice that it only has two adjustable weights, which is intrinsically not enough to adjust for the balance of the balance wheel about its axis of rotation (you'd really need *at least* four), and the eccentric weights are relatively close to the center axis, where moving them has a proportionally much smaller impact on the inertia of the balance wheel. These two factors combined mean that the adjustment range they provide is not enough to adjust the timing behaviour of the escapement, and selective lasering off of parts of the balance wheel are necessary to achieve balance on the axis and basic timing performance.

>> No.14225540

>>14225295
>>14225535
Basically this means that the eccentric weights on Powermatic-80 style balance wheels provide a relatively limited range of adjustment around the baseline set at the factory by laser burning mass off the balance wheel to try and balance it on the axis and set its intertia.

You have a lot of options now. A lot companies are putting out more mid-sized models in your size range.

Obviously a Grand Seiko 9F HAQ would be very nice. I don't know if you're specifically looking for mechanical or automatic, though.
You might also want to look at the Omega Constellation Co-Axial 35mm.
Cartier makes a wide variety of watches around the 35mm size. Those are a little dressier.

If you're willing to buy used, there are hundreds of thousands of Rolex Air Kings, Oyster Perpetuals, and OP Dates in your price range.

Looking for smaller watches puts you at an advantage since most men don't want to wear a watch that size and it's still slightly too big for most women.

Big fucking deal. It's not that special a movement. It's not the 2824, but it's not like it was hand-made by George Daniels either.

To answer >>14228153 for you: A Rolex Daytona in steel is an example of a watch that is good value. If you buy it new, decide you don't like it, and want to sell it, you have to really make an effort to lose more than a couple hundred dollars. If you hold onto it for even a few years, you'll be able to sell it for more than you paid.

Your brand-new Seamastalmost cost you around a thousand dollars, but if you find someone who will give you 600 for it right now, sell it, because that'll be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. That thing will never be a collector's item and it will be at least a century before it's worth what you paid for it.
