What is your opinion of Birkenstocks? They seem comfy and I like the idea of things that last forever or are at least easily repairable.

They are ugly as hell.
But I worked with this nigger who was using my work place as a drug front, and he literally drove to work in a Rubicon Jeep full of Birkenstocks. He offered me a free pair.

Goddamn they are the most comfortable sandals I have ever owned. And durable. High quality.
