Adding to this, their entire marketing on Grand Seiko with the “Zaratsu” polishing is entirely bullshit. Zaratsu is a Nipponised version of Sallaz, Sallaz was a Swiss manufacturer of lapping machines and supplied Swiss watch manufactures with those machines. The Nips heard of this and started buying the machines and they’re now using it to market their Grand Seikos as if it were traditional Samurai banzai shit and animu weebs and mid-life crisis boomers on WUS eat this up.

Almost nobody in Switzerland can touch GS when it comes to case finishing.

And GS is known for much more than just the case; their dials and dial furniture are held in even higher regard.

If Grand Seiko is superior to European brands wouldn’t they be selling out, especially at 40% off brand new? If Seiko had such a grand reputation and “heritage” wouldn’t old stock Grand Seiko models with the Seiko-GS-Grand Seiko dials sell for much more now that they’re being discontinued? Like Mk I - III metres first red Subs are much more expensive than regular red feet first Subs. Any high-end European brand that Grand Seiko is trying to compete with would be ridiculed if their watches sold for 40% off the tag, full set and brand new, old stock or not. Impulse purchase. I read articles about it and the specs and photos seemed good, and it was a limited edition. I happened to be in a watch store, saw it and thought why not.

After actually wearing it a few times I knew it wasn't for me. Didn't add anything new to my collection, it didn't have the wow factor, the bracelet was poor and despite what some of the posters here say the dial isn't spectacular (enough) under normal viewing conditions. No one walks around with a macro-lens to get a hardon from some microscopic finishing.

So I’m reading about the whole GS vs Swiss debate and it’s like, sure it’s not as good as something upwards of 20 grand or whatever but if you have less than 10 grand for a watch it seems pretty good.

Like, hear me out. I feel like most Swiss brands overcharge because their workers are experts paid huge amounts because of the reputation that the industry holds, but most seem to be somewhat sub par in effort. Again, I’m talking about sub-10k brands and watches.

Yet GS put a shit ton of effort into producing their watches while keeping costs down, most likely as a result of underpaying their employees due to the Japanese economy and watch industry salaries being lower than that of the Swiss.

The way I feel is like if GS were suddenly bought up by a group poem swatch and all their workforce moved to Geneve, they would jack up the price even though that quality of the produce remains the same.

Grand Seiko is okay but by no means is it comparable to high-end European brands. It just lacks prestige and the name is tacky, the Grand prefix, specifically. At the end of the day, it’ll still be a Seiko produced in Japan. Let’s not forget Seiko’s history, this is the very same company that tried to kill the art of horlogerie and now years later they’re trying to so hard to be taken seriously and get in to haute horlogerie.

It’s an uphill battle for them, they gave themselves the shitter image by producing, well, shitters. Cheap, mass-produced, lifeless shitters and ripped off Swiss designs. That is their reputation, how will they shake it off? I don’t know, but I do know I never want one on my wrist because of it. The watch industry today is all about history now and in the high-end market, snobbery is very, very real. Ask yourself, if GS is so valuable why don’t we see vintage Grand Seiko fetching record-setting prices, thousands, if not millions at auctions like Phillips or Christie’s, yet we see brand new “old models” Grand Seikos selling for 40% off, full set with warranty.

It's not a bad idea to get it to see if you like those kinds of watches, if you bought a more expensive Seiko or entry level Swiss and found out you didn't want it then your only way out is to flip it or eat the cost.

Go look at used sales on eBay, my first Seiko 5 cost 39$. You aren’t gambling anything by spending 39$. It’s held up great for the past 10+ years and if I sold it today I can easily get what I spent back.

Think of old handmade muskets, they almost always had some kind of ornamental flourish (shapes, engraving, ...) that is entirely non-functional, even the most basic ones.
Why?
Because they're handmade, and these kinds of little flourishes are meant to show the maker knows his shit.
Without these flourishes, those muskets would all look the same and it would be much harder to tell quality from crap.

That disappeared when guns started becoming factory made, largely by automated machines.
At that point, those flourishes no longer served their purpose.

The same very much applies to watches; they were always relatively ornate for very much the same purpose (although obviously a lot of finishing has an underlying functional reason).
And to this day, relatively traditional wristwatches carry over that tradition.

That layout made so little sense.

The little triangle formed by "GS" with "Grand Seiko" below it absolutely belongs at the top of the dial, where the shape of this "triangle" follows the contours of the dial's outline.
Plus, having "SEIKO" at the top adds to the number of different typographies found on the dial.
And that "SEIKO" is not a very elegant or refined logo to begin with.

The new dial layout is a massive improvement in my eyes.

In my case (this post: >>14101064) they did put what I payed, but in SGD instead of Euros, and the local post filed customs as if it were USD, so the price was €13,- higher. That was an error at the post office though, and creationwatches did send me the invoices in EUR on my request.. Creationwatches provided a LOT better service than the local post (that made me send no less than 3 actual fucking letters in envelopes before getting the overcharged tax back) in my case, but your milage may vary.
