A few weeks ago we talked about clothing and I hinted that I like 'decent' clothing. A few days later she showed me a mirror pic of her trying on neat trousers with small grey-white plaid. I told her that I liked it on her but she was hesitant to buy it. A week days ago she told me she bought it and I got to see it on her a few days ago.

I'm not forcing her. That wouldn't work. She's too stubborn with the way she dresses for that

Uniqlo doesn't follow Ivy as closely, also a lot of their stuff is made in Japan (uniqlo never is). I won't say Beams+ trousers or shirts are any better than qlo (especially given the sad collar on Beams shirts), but the sportcoats really cover all the bases for textbook ivy features that uniqlo, Jcrew, etc just don't cover.

Can someone explain to me the difference between prep, traditional and ivy?
How are they the same, how are they different and which one should a 28 year old who will start law school next year be dressing?

what brands make acceptable college jackets? they basically are supposed to have logos and shit but that would go against the non branding ethos and would be only good to do when you wear your own college jacket. sadly i live in europe and go to a regular uni. what are my options?

It sure does. Also I hate buying clothes online I don't think I've ever done it before. Really will only buy clothes and shoes after trying them on given how variable sizing is. Was looking at LL Bean today and even if I did want to sink hundreds on a pair of shoes and some more on shipping if they don't fit right I get to enjoy the hassle of long distance customer service and another month waiting to get confirmation my return went through. Then another month waiting for a new pair and thats assuming they let me...etc etc. not worth it

I'm lucky to live near a Brooks Brothers but you're right about their trash website. I got the last pair of madras bermuda shorts in the store which were a size 32 when I am a size 30. Website didn't say that. It "fits" fine but its not really ideal. Wear it with a belt sometimes despite not being totally necessary.

Honestly I fall back on stuff like that on occasion when I really can't be fucked. If I'm just getting some milk I'm not really caring but my footwear usually gives me away. Loafers or boat shoes or white tennis shoes.

Buying online is a bloody nightmare for me since I've starting living in Paris. There's always lots of doors with codes before the delivery person can get in, and because they're retarded they always get lost and go back to the depot where the package sits for ages somewhere in the suburbs before being forwarded to another service which tried to put it in a shop that I've asked for before saying it's not available before putting it in the hands of some random shop a hundred miles away from where I live. This exact same thing has happened too many times to count. FedEx has lost my package three times.

Keydge jackets sold by John Simons in the UK, and the J Crew "chore blazers" sort of hit the note but they don't quite have the Ivy details I'm looking for. This is a bit hard to find, but deadstock/vintage 1960s jackets fit this bill if you can find them. O'Connells has deadstock or new ones from time to time, but that's obviously very expensive. I have what I think is an 80s Brooks Bros seersucker sportcoat that sort of fits this bill (not completely unconstructed though). Uniqlo sometimes has Ivy-esque unconstructed sportcoats, but not every summer.

A bunch of other Japanese companies make them every summer, like Soutiencol, VAN JAC (vintage or the shittier reboot), and alsoBEAMS/BEAMS PLUS, I saw some on Ebay searching "Beams japan blazer".

If you wanna blow some money, I think thickasthievesla will do mtm to fit this bill.

Look at a lot of the fieldsports based Insta pages. If you imagine the same fits but without the breeks, plus twos/fours or whatever. Just sub those out for chinos, moleskin, cords, even jeans if you like and you're about there. Just watch the fit and tailoring obviously. If you're not shooting you likely won't need as baggy a fit. Chunky brogues like you say, a good pair of boots if you're somewhere a bit muddier.

I'm surprised at how constructed "period" ivy stuff is, especially for the chest areas. A lot of "bleeding madras" stuff from back then seems to be lined and says dryclean only too.

This fit is awful but I love the shirt-like construction (almost neapolitan?) of BEAMS summer sportcoats.

It rather depends. I wear a tweed cap almost year around apart from high summer but I'd say a lot less wear on everything outside of the shooting season. I get more use out of my Barbour jacket between now and when it gets too warm for it. It keeps the magic in the tweed a bit more.

Tweed suits are a different question again, I have a really nice charcoal/navy Donegal suit that I wear a lot. Same for a brown checked one but that's often just the jacket.

Here in the US darker colors are the preferred choice for most professional settings. Law, finance, upper level business and the like typically still have very conservative dress codes and something like light grey would be looked down upon.
We tend to stick to navy, black and charcoal.

i love how ass ravaged people get over american traditional prepwear. i dress head to toe, in brooks brothers, tan chinos, and a navy blazer. at this point, i just do it to piss ppl off. i work in a dirty sewer as a maintenanceman, and have never been to a prep or ivy school in my life. I like the look, and thats all that matters to me.

sometimes late at night, i will sneak outside and scuff my loafers or brush my oxford collar with sandpaper, or find a yacht or tennis court and take a picture with it, so I can look more "authentic". i fucking love it.
